And I wouldn’t be surprised if you actually clicked on any of those pages advertised above. A typical internet user’s mind works like that on any website. You might be smart enough to skip those interesting ads, but an average user doesn’t. So, they tend to click on this kind of ads more often.
THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND
It’s a scientific fact that we process thousands of information unconsciously. And while a user is reading an article, unconsciously his mind knows that, what he’s reading is not enough. Then, boom the ad shows up exactly in the middle of the article presenting his unconscious mind with possible solutions to his problem. Those who are not web savvy does fall for it and clicks on your ads. And it’s one of the reasons why tech websites don’t rely on CPC as much but rather prefer to use CPM based or direct advertising sponsorships. Because they know, the CTR is very poor. And another interesting fact, while the reader is reading something they get used to the blended colors. But if they encounter a high contrasting ad, their mind sees it as danger/distraction and skips over.
THE TRAFFIC SOURCE
The traffic source honestly does matter; it also depends on the content itself. For example, Slashdot.org is usually visited by tech people. However, if your article is about weight loss, a user who wants to lose weight will check your article. But since they are used to the whole Google mumbo jumbo, they will skip over. Because they know Google’s organic results will give better results. It’s kind of weird really; they come to your website from a user submitted directory, but don’t trust the paid ads or will just later visit google.com for organic results. However, if you are advertising in Yahoo Answers, the click through rate due to those pages are very high. So, advertise your website or specific articles to the sources where non tech people hang out. Yes, they can talk about technology but tech people usually don’t hang out in Yahoo Answers. (In most cases of course)
THE RIGHT KIND OF PLACEMENT
The ad sizes that worked for me well are 300 x 250, Blended. Meaning the Title, and Link color must match the link color of your website layout, the text color must be same as the text color of your web page, and the background must be same as where the ad is placed.
