skills must be provided to the young prospective entrepreneurs through the ‘Entrepreneurship
Development Programmes’ for starting their micro enterprises. Financial projections under
NFS for 2006-07 have been assessed at Rs.2400.00 lakhs.

15.    Other Priority Sector ( Services and Business )

Financial projections under Other Priority Sector ( Services and Business ) for 2006-07 have
been assessed at Rs.3000.00 lakhs.

16 .   Promotion and linkage of Self Help Groups (SHGs)

In Nagaon district, 9876 SHGs have been promoted upto 31 March 2005. Out of which,
nearly 1400 SHGs have been provided credit of Rs.248.47 lakhs under SHG - Bank Linkage
Programme. As lot of importance is being given for providing ‘micro finance (mF)’ to the
rural poor people through SHGs, all bank branches need to take steps for credit linkage of
SHGs. In 2006-07, it is estimated that 2000 SHGs are to be promoted and 1500 new SHGs are to
be provided credit.

17.    Farmers Clubs

There are 23 active Farmers Clubs under various bank branches in the district. In 2006-07,
another 25 Farmers Clubs are proposed to be launched under bank branches in the district.

18.    Banking

The institutional credit delivery system in the district is mainly catered by Commercial Banks
(CBs), Co-operative Banks (SCB) and Regional Rural Bank (RRB) functioning with 91
branches. The district has 57 branches of CBs, 30 branches of RRB(Lakhimi Gaonlia Bank)
and 4 branches of SCB. Besides, the Assam State Co-op Agrl. and Rural Dev. Bank Ltd. has 3
branches. United Bank of India is the lead bank in the district with 18 branches. United Bank
of India has the controlling office at Nagaon. Controlling offices of other CBs are located at
outside the district. Total deposits and advances outstanding in the district as on 31.3.2005
were Rs.90318 lakh and Rs.32561 lakh respectively. CD Ratio in the district had increased to
36% as on 31-03-2005 from 27% as on 31-03-2004. Out of total advances outstanding, Priority
Sector advances in the district was 61% against the stipulated norms of 40%. In the case of
agrl. lending CBs had a shortfall of 2%. The overall recovery position in the district was 39%.
Concerted efforts with the help of concerned govt. officials have to be made for recovery of
overdue loans for better recycling of funds . District authority may expedite the Bakijai cases.

13.    Predominant economic activities :

The economy is mainly agrarian. There are three big/ medium industries in the district
Silghat Co-op. Jute Mill, Silghat,. Nagaon Co-op. Sugar Mill, Kampur and Co-op. Cotton Mill,
Katimari. However, out of the three, at present the Jute Mill at Silghat is running properly
and other two mills viz., Sugar Mill and Cotton Mill have since stopped functioning due
to shortage of raw materials and non availability of required funds.

Sericulture is also an important activity practiced widely in the district. It is an important
source of supplementary income and employment particularly to the rural womenfolk. The
