Booms & Socks

Linkable Absorbent Booms
Absorbent booms are ideal for containing and cleaning up spills on water. Booms repel
water and float even when completely saturated.

Absorbent booms are constructed with a strong mesh outer skin encasing non-linting
and highly absorbent polypropylene filler. Linkable booms come complete with end
rings and clips attached to nylon rope running the length of the boom.

Absorbent booms are available in 5" and 8" diameters. Each bundle of boom contains
four 10' linkable sections of boom. 5" boom is suitable for marinas and calm waters, while 8" boom is essential for areas
with more wave action.

We also offer containment boom for more permanent containment.

Please contact us for further information and pricing on absorbent booms for your application.

Absorbent Socks
Absorbent socks are flexible tubes used to contain and clean-up spilled fluids. Socks
are widely used in industrial applications and are ideal for Spill Kits. Fast spreading
spills are quickly stopped with a sock.

Our full line of socks all have knitted sleeves and contain the highest quality, 100%
polypropylene fill available. Oil-only socks are available in white. Universal socks are
offered in grey. Hazardous material spills should be tackled with our yellow sock.

Socks are available in 4', 8' and custom lengths. All socks are 3" in diameter.

protection tool.

The Silt Bag has a fabric flange that will accept a hose up to 6" in diameter. A ring clamp is included with each bag for
quick and easy installation at your site.

The Silt Bag is available in any size by custom order, or you

Silt Fencing

Silt Fence is a temporary silt control device that helps to prevent the loss of silts from a site during rain, or other run-off
events.
Silt Fences are temporary silt control devices that
are designed to prevent the release of silt from a
construction site. Silt fences prevent silt
contamination of sensitive areas such as
neighboring properties, streams, and sewer catch
basins. A properly installed and maintained silt fence
will collect silts before they can cause contamination
requiring expensive clean up.

Silt fences create a puddle behind the fence that
acts as a "stilling basin" allowing silts to settle. Silt
Fences are most often used on construction sites
where the soil has been stripped of natural
vegetation. The bare soil is easily eroded and can
lead to the loss of silt in the event of a run-off event.
The silt fence helps to prevent the movement of silt
from the bare soil area to an adjacent area.

Silt fences are manufactured with a woven geotextile fabric on wooden or steel posts. The fabric is attached to the post
with staples or other suitable fasteners and then packaged for shipment. Placement of stakes varies with the region and
the specifications of different jurisdictions, however spacing of 8 ft and 10 ft are common. Typical silt fences are 3 ft high
with 4 ft stakes for anchoring.

Silt fences help to keep silts out of catch basins, streams and waterways, off of streets, and out of neighboring property.
By preventing the loss of silt and sediment from the construction site to these sensitive areas cleanup costs are
eliminated. In some US states there is a requirement to surround all sites with a silt fence where the soil may be exposed.

Silt fences must be installed properly to work. A small trench must be dug in the soil to anchor the bottom end of the
fabric. The anchor trench is usually about 150 mm deep by 150 mm wide (6 inches by 6 inches). If the fabric is not
anchored then the water can flow under the fence and the fence will not remove silts.

The bottom of the fabric is placed in this trench on the upstream side of the fence and then carefully backfilled. Adjacent
lengths of silt fence are rolled together around the end posts. Silt Fences must also be periodically cleaned to remove
collected silt and sediment. If silts and sediment are allowed to accumulate then the fence may be overwhelmed by the
weight which can lead to failure of the fence. Most silt fence failures are caused by lack of maintenance. After each period
of heavy run-off, silts will have accumulated behind the fence. If the accumulation of silt becomes too deep the weight will
overwhelm the fence and allow the silts to escape.

To prevent this failure the collected silts should be removed from the back of the fence periodically. The fence fabric
should also be rinsed of silts. Removing silt and washing down the fabric prevent silt accumulations from overwhelming
the fence.

Green Silt Fence is a temporary linear sediment
barrier of permeable fabric designed to intercept
and slow the flow of sediment-laden sheet flow
runoff. The green color is more aesthetically
appealing and provides a better visual barrier than
the traditional black colored silt fence. Green Silt
Fence is made from a polypropylene fabric with
reinforcing strips for added strength. This Green Silt
fence is available in two styles; un-supported in rolls
3' x 100' c/w wood stakes installed every 6' o.c. and
a reinforced product that is supported with a 14
gauge steel wire.

Turbidity Curtains and Barriers

Floating turbidity barriers or curtains are barriers that control suspended solids and turbidity in a water column generated
by dredging and disposal of dredged material. They are considered to be the last line of defense against sediment
migration into nearby marine environment.

A floating turbidity barrier may be a permeable or an
impermeable device used to isolate the near shore
work area and to confine the sediment entering into
a body of water. These devices may be deployed in
areas where sediment discharge to a stream is
unavoidable. The curtains are designed to effectively
deflect and contain sediment within a limited area
and to provide sufficient retention time for the
sediment particles to settle in the bottom of the
reservoir. Our turbidity curtains consist of a
permeable or impermeable body fabric that is
suspended vertically in a body of water, with floats at
the top and ballast chain in the bottom to hold the
curtain in a vertical position. They are commonly
used in the vicinity of marine environments to protect
the contained water from turbulence, allowing
particles to fall out of suspension.

Standard floating turbidity curtains come in three different constructions. They are referred to as Type 1, Type 2 and
Type 3 as per the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) specifications.

Type 1 turbidity curtains should be used in protected areas where there is no current and the area is sheltered from wind
and waves. Some of the applications include ponds, shallow lakes, small streams and marshes.

Type 2 turbidity curtains should be used in areas where there may be slow to moderate running current (up to 2 knots or
3.5 feet per second) and/or wind and wave action which can affect the curtain. It has a top load cable and special stress
plates for reinforcing the corners and is designed to handle more severe conditions. It is recommended for lakes, streams,
intercostals and tidal areas.

                                                                                     SUPPLY CATALOGUE 2008‐2009

Type 3 turbidity curtains should be used in areas where considerable current (up to 3 knots or 5 feet per second) may be
present, where tidal action may be present, and/or where the curtain is potentially subject to wind and wave action. A
woven polypropylene monofilament fabric screen is sewn to the body fabric to offset any hydrodynamic forces acting on
the curtain.

Turbidity curtains should be installed at the location shown on the plan and according to the manufacturer’s guidelines or
as directed by the engineer. The curtain must be installed considering site details such as current velocity, water depth,
bottom sediment types and background levels of turbidity.

During recent years there have been increased concerns regarding the potential impacts that dredging of contaminated
sediments may have on the nearby environmental resources. Turbidity curtains are designed to control suspended
sediment dispersion in a body of water caused during dredging or construction activities in the vicinity of a marine
environment. For the most recent specifications on Type 1, 2 and 3 turbidity curtains please consult
www.layfieldgroup.com.

Floating Silt Curtains

Floating Silt Curtain (FSC) often referred to as Turbidity Curtains provide an effective and price sensitive system for
isolating silt or other hazardous materials while working in an aquatic ecosystem.

Layfield's standard FSC design will prevent
particulate materials from leaving the immediate
area of construction or earth works. A sturdy FSC
filter fabric will protect aquatic environments, and
protect you from costly environmental clean up work
and liability from environmental damage.

Layfield's standard FSC units are available in
nominal heights of 7ft, 13 ft and 19 ft (2.1m, 4.0m,
and 5.8m) but custom curtains can be made to
accommodate any water depth. The standard FSC
body is constructed of Typar 3401 filter fabric, a
strong, high filtration material exclusive to Layfield.
The float and bottom sleeve of the FSC are wrapped
with UV stable, high strength RPE materials for
durability.

While the standard FSC sections are constructed
with international orange fabric around the float and visible above the waterline, custom colours are available. In
applications where safe work requires the curtain to be highly visible above the waterline, contact Layfield to discuss the
use of alternative colours.

                                                                                      SUPPLY CATALOGUE 2008‐2009

FSC units are preassembled in 50 ft (15m) lengths,
and connecting hardware is included with each unit
so the system can be expanded to any length. FSC
systems over 800 feet long have been utilized to
isolate large portions of a water body. The 50 ft
sections need only be connected to the desired
length, weighted down with the addition of a chain or
cable, and deployed into position.

There are many customizable options when ordering
a FSC system. A solid geotextile body can be used
to create a floating barrier or baffle curtain. A solid
barrier is effective in isolating water-soluble materials
such as herbicides or other chemicals. A heavier
filter fabric such as a woven monofilament material
can be used for the body of the curtain when
moderate currents or tidal forces will be
encountered.

Finally, the size of the flotation section can be adjusted to provide greater buoyancy to the curtain. Sufficient buoyancy is
important when solid materials may adhere to the curtain and exert a downward force.

Layfield also offers the Turbidity Curtain which is made with more robust materials and construction. Turbidity Curtains are
typically made of an impermeable polyester reinforced vinyl and heat seamed for added durability. Please see the
Turbidity Curtain page for more information.

Layfield's FSC products have been used for several
years to isolate hazardous materials within a water
body. Common applications include isolating silts
and particulate matter, and isolating chemicals such
as herbicides with a solid curtain. Whether a
standard or custom FSC system is required in your
application.

Floating Baffle Curtains are another form of
impermeable curtain manufactured by Layfield.
Floating Baffle Curtains are an important tool in
treating liquid wastes. Unlike Floating Silt Curtains,
Floating Baffle Curtains are generally intended for
longer-term use, and may require greater chemical
resistance for use with wastes. For this reason
Floating Baffle Curtains generally use different
materials of construction than an impermeable FSC.

Catch Basin Sediment Trap

Catch Basin Sediment Traps (CBST's) are placed in catch basins to filter silt from runoff water.
When installed and maintained properly, the CBST
removes silt and particulate matter from runoff water,
preventing the fouling of the stormwater system and
protecting the downstream aquatic environments
from siltation. The CBST is an economical and
effective method to protect you from costly cleanup
work. The potential liability for downstream
environmental damage makes the CBST an obvious
choice for construction and earthwork projects.
Layfield produces the CBST in standard sizes
(please see the properties table) but custom sizes
are also available. The body of Layfield's CBST is
constructed from 8 oz/sy nonwoven geotextile. The
standard design includes a cylindrical filter area
which extends into the catch basin, and a flat apron
portion. The apron sits between the grate and the
catch basin edge and is supported by a wire frame
which adjusts to fit most standard catch basins.
Layfield's CBST design includes a high strength
lifting strap, and relief overflow slots at the top of the cylindrical filter section. The relief slots allow water to escape into the
catch basin if the CBST has been filled with silt.

Layfield's CBST is an effective tool in your efforts to meet environmental legislation. The CBST also prevents costly clean
up costs caused by siltation of the storm water system. These types of devices have been approved as Best Management
Practices (BMPs) in much of the US. For more information on Layfield's Catch Basin Sediment Trap please consult
