                       Diversity —
         What is the Policy? What are the Goals?
Diversity Policy and Goals: (Reference: Cooperative Agreement)

Policy: ERCs must embrace the cultural, gender, racial, and ethnic diversity of the
United States in the composition of their leadership, faculty, and student teams and
their graduates in order to assure that all talented people can pursue and receive
engineering degrees and be engaged in engineering research and education.

Each ERC is expected to demonstrate a significant commitment to, and success in,
exceeding national engineering-wide averages for the involvement of women,
underrepresented racial minorities, and Hispanic-Americans as leaders, faculty,
undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students, and as ERC students who have
graduated.

No universities … will employ quotas or set-asides based on race.

Goal: Diversity Success Better than Dept, College, University, National Metrics
  “Serve as model for diversity within each institution and for nation as a whole.”

                    Diversity Policy Implementation
• Prepare and execute a Diversity Strategic Plan.
• Demonstrate the existence of a partnership among the affiliated deans
  of engineering, chairs of departments of affiliated faculty to increase diversity of
  the center’s leadership team, faculty, students, and graduates.
• Develop outreach connections with NSF programs focused specifically on
  increasing diversity in science and engineering students and faculty
  ( e.g., LSAMP, AGEP, TCUP, and other programs serving underrepresented).
• Develop and strengthen long-term core and/or outreach partnerships
  with predominantly female, African-American, Native-American, and
  Hispanic-American serving institutions.
• Introduce diverse cadres of pre-college students to the excitement and challenges
  of engineering through summer and year-around programs
  focused on design and research.
• Focus any REU and RET programs on diversity.

The research component of the ERC is organized around five thrust areas:

                                       EECS 414: Introduction to MEMS
•           Enrollment has increased from 83 to 140; more than 50% were undergraduates
            in 2003
•           Prerequisites: Differential Equations and Electromagnetics
•           The course was offered to WMU for the first time in 2003 and is now offered at
            Howard and Mayaguez as well as at WMU, MSU, and MTU
•           A three-way microsystems alliance has been developed with Kyoto University
            and the University of Freiburg, increasing distribution further.
