Dear Dr. Gurbuz,
I have read the draft design for the Erie Biosciences Academy Charter School that your group has
proposed to open in Millcreek Township. We at LECOM recognize the need to encourage young
students to begin thinking about science, technology and health care careers as early as they enter
middle school and we see this as opportunity to promote the health professions among this age
group.
I would like to make two recommendations that correlate to the educational programs at LECOM.
The Biomedical Pathways should include Pharmacy, since pharmacists are important members of
the health care team when it comes to providing optimum patient care. Where it is appropriate, the
charter school should include health classes that cover the topics of smoking cessation, suicide
prevention and the health dangers related to obesity.
LECOM has partnered with many of the schools in Erie County because the College has a
commitment to the children of this community. The College can provide similar programs that we
have offered to other schools.
To the Erie Biosciences Academy Charter School, LECOM would extend:
   1. advice on curriculum that is appropriate to physicians, pharmacists and dentists;
   2. make available competitive scholarships for students who choose to attend LECOM and are
      accepted for their doctoral education;
   3. provide anatomic presentations including the brain with cadaver specimens;
   4. and invite the Charter School students to participate in the Medical Applications in Sciences
      in Health (MASH) where students could attend Medical/Pharmacy School for a week.
I wish the founders of the Erie Biosciences Academy Charter School the best in their efforts to
develop an academic program focused on the future careers of Erie area students and the health
care needs of our community.

Regards,
