Driver safety has become a hot topic in recent years. With so many distractions out
there to take drivers attention off the road, there is a need to re-evaluate safe
driving practices. Practices such as texting and driving and the use of technology
when behind the wheel has changed the way that people think about driving. People
have gotten away from simply focusing their attention on the road and have started
to use driving as a time to catch up with friends, send messages, and even read while
behind the wheel.
With that being said, a number of driving safety apps has been developed to assist
drivers. These apps use technology to help drivers instead of distracting them from
what they should be doing when behind the wheel.
Safe Driving Apps
While there is no shortage of driving based apps, no matter how many you use, the
choice to be a distraction free driver is up to you. However, the following apps that
can be used on your smartphone, can help you with safe and effective driving
practices.
   1. Not While Driving: This app, which is only available to the Blackberry, uses your cars
GPS to identify when the car is in motion. When the car is moving, the app will put your
phone into sleep mode so you will not be distracted.
   2. Drive First: This app, which is available for Blackberry and Android smartphones, locks
your phone when your vehicle is in motion. When you come to a complete stop, your
phone will unlock and you can use it as normal.
   3. DriveMode: This is a free app that users need to simply click before they start driving.
When it is on, it will automatically reply to any messages sent. It works in a similar way
to an out of office email reply. It also mutes alerts and sounds that are associated with
text messages and incoming calls so you will not become tempted to answer.
   4. Drivesafe.ly: Available for all the major smartphone platforms, this app assists with
hands free. When a message comes in, the app will read texts and emails out loud. The
downfall of this app is that it is not free with prices starting at $3.99 per month and up.
   5. TextArrest: This app, which is available for most Android smartphones, disables both
text and email by locking the phones screen so that no messages can be read or sent
when the car is in motion.

The goal of each one of these smartphone based apps is to reduce driver’s access to
their phone while their vehicle is in motion. It only takes a second for a driver to
lose control of their vehicle and this is why it is so important to take away your
phone as a distraction.
However, with many of these apps being free and with some people reluctant to opt
into using these apps; use of these apps may be an issue. But one thing is for sure –
the decision to be a safe and effective driver is up to you. Take matters into your
own hands and avoid distracted driving practices.
