25th of the Month Report
December, 2011
Report submitted by: Jeff Sterr
President
Wisconsin Collegiate DECA
Hello everyone, I am glad to see that I have several more 15th of the month reports this
month! I am still missing quite a few though, and would once again challenge those
chapters who did not send one, to send one, even if it is as simple as “We did not have
time to do any social events.” or, “We have less members than we need and cannot get
anything put together.” Let me know and we can get something figured out on how to
help recruit, put together events, etc… Also… Happy Holidays to Everyone!!!
Please look upon this report as a worthwhile opportunity to access information from
around the state to ever improve your own chapters. The report will become valid more
so with continued improvement in 15th of the Month Report responses.
15th of the Month Reports must be postmarked or arrive via email by the 15th of each
Month, October through February. Typed and printed reports may be mailed to the
Collegiate DECA State President. Please use the 15th of the month report template for
your future submissions to facilitate the interpretation and uniformity of all state
correspondences.

25th of the Month Report Questions
1. What has your chapter done to increase
membership and how have these efforts been
beneficial?
University of Wisconsin Whitewater – This month we had another opportunity to
attend a new student seminar class to to some students about what it means to be
involved with DECA. Again, these efforts have been very beneficial to us as a whole. It
is an extremely good method for raising awareness about DECA on our campus to
incoming freshman, having a one-on-one way to speak to potential members while
assisting our school, and giving current members a chance to be in a leadership role by
inviting them to come speak to their peers. Although the new student seminar classes
are less common in second semester, we hope to continue to make use of this
promotion method whenever available.
As always, we have continually done what we can to have our name known on
campus by making use of digital signs for our main business building, signboards that
rotate between locations on a week by week basis and general signs throughout
campus. This is one of the easiest and most available ways to have our name known on
campus to a large scale audience.
Chippewa Valley Technical College – We have made up a survey that we will be
handing out the 1st week of next semester. We will be going into mainly business and
marketing classes and asking them to take 5 minutes to tell us what they know about
DECA. We feel this will give us a better idea of why we may not have as many members
as we would like. We are also planning our Spring Semester kick off which will attract
more members. We again will be going into classrooms and telling them about the kick
off and why they should join.
WITC – Rice Lake – The DECA advisors offered extra credit for those who would like to
see what Deca was about and competed in our Regional Conferences.
We had several others that tried and seemed interested in trying out deca next
semester.
Western Technical College-La Crosse- Something’s our chapter has done have been a
display case that includes a video to display all of our accomplishments, we created
bookmarks with all information about our meetings, and we have continued to just
spread the word.
Gateway Technical College-Kenosha – We held a general meeting open to the entire
student body. We did get new membership out of this.
Waukesha County Technical College-Pewaukee – We had a bowling party on the
second of December which was offered to the entire school to introduce DECA to them.
We have also had our VP of Recruitment sitting in the hallways talking to students about
the benefit that DECA has to them.
Fox Valley Technical College-Oshkosh- Members continuing to speak to students in classes
on campus, Spreading awareness through on campus fundraisers
Fox Valley Technical College-Appleton- We have been talking with the accounting
club to try and get them interested in competing in the Financial Analysis portion of
DECA.
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College- As a group, we have made electronic posters
that run on the TV’s around our school. We also are active in our school’s events such as
weekly movie days and activities that students would be involved in. By doing this, more
people know about our DECA group but are not necessarily joining. We will continue to
spread the word about DECA!
Madison College- N/A
2. What fund-raisers have you worked on? How
successful were they? Towards what Wisconsin
Collegiate DECA event were they contributed?
Please list all pertinent details.
University of Wisconsin Whitewater – This month we continued to plan our large
event that will be held next semester. We will be hosting a large-scale Autism Speaks
awareness campaign shortly before state competition. This campaign will have a month
of advertising with signs, billboards, and much more. It will all lead up to a week of
various events, within the community and directly on campus. Much of this will be
written about in further detail in a future report as reservations are finalized and official
plans are made by our committee.
Our Vice President of Public Relations has also been actively contacting local
businesses to set up chances to speak with them about potential fundraising
opportunities. To take our efforts a step further, all members of the Executive Board
will be personally delivering letters to local businesses over winter break. We plan to
use any future fundraising from these efforts to go towards our State and National
competitions. We would like to reduce competition costs as much as possible for our
members to increase the turnout from Whitewater.
Chippewa Valley Technical College – Our My Local Deals coupon books sale went very
well. They have over $8,000 worth of potential savings. We are selling the books for
$10.00. As a club we get $7.00 for them. 0.50 of that $7.00 goes to a charity of our
choice. Since we are doing this fundraiser as a competition against other clubs, which
ever club sells the most books gets to pick the charity. If our club wins, we are choosing
Autism Speaks. These seemed to sell extremely well. We have not found out which club
sold the most books yet
WITC – Rice Lake – Our members are selling Kwik Trip Scrip Cards to help fund for state
competition. This has been somewhat successful but the return is only 10%.
We have also are selling our school wide raffle tickets that is successful; we get a good
return tickets. These tickets will also be going towards state.
Western Technical College-La Crosse.. This month some fundraisers that we have
done were at the beginning of the month we held our annual silent auction to help with
the cost of travel. We also held a bake sale to raise money for autism. And the last
fundraiser we did was we sold candles. Another fundraiser that was held was Wing then
Sing which was karaoke for autism which was organized and put on by a member
through the Project Management class. All of the fundraisers were a success.
Gateway Technical College-Kenosha – We have been holding food sales every
Wednesday. This money is being raised for Autism Speaks, as well as for our local
chapter. We are also working on a Black Tie event to be held in February.
Waukesha County Technical College-Pewaukee – We have been doing a couple different
fundraisers. We have been working on helping our members raise money for events but having
them sell Mr. Z’s Pizza and Perfect Presents. We have also teamed up with Noodles and
Company in New Berlin to have a benefit night on December 18th to raise money for Autism
Speaks U.
Fox Valley Technical College-Oshkosh- Holiday Silent Auction raised over $700 which will
be going towards members’ accounts who brought in items for the auction
Fox Valley Technical College-Appleton- We have been working on getting our silent
auction set up for the spring semester, and started receiving donations from businesses.
Also, we have been working diligently on Regionals, and getting all of the paperwork set
up and getting the programs designed.
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College- As of now, we are selling Seroogy’s candy
bars around our school and our community. Since it is the holidays, everyone wants
chocolate. We are also planning some fun events that will get our group known. Instead
of focusing on many “small” events, we are going to create one “big” event. This may
include an action or a dance.
Madison College- N/A
3. Did you hold any social activities? What did you
do? How many people attended?
University of Wisconsin Whitewater – This past month has been very busy for our
chapter, which sadly left less time for social events than we had initially hoped.
However, we did host an end of the semester social night at our latest meeting. At this
gathering we congratulated one of our graduating seniors, Melissa Rudig, which will be
our first Whitewater-DECA member to graduate. She has been with our team since the
founding of our group and has helped out with many activities, making it both a sad and
joyous moment for everyone. At the meeting we also took a moment to thank
everyone for their hard work this semester with a short slide show that detailed some of
our accomplishments and duties. After this we all decorated cookies together, played
games, and enjoyed each other’s company. We had 24 general members, all seven
members of the executive board, and one of advisors in attendance. It was a very laid
back meeting with finals approaching this week, we all needed a fun meeting to calm
down and enjoy some delicious treats.
Our other advisor recently had a healthy baby and is still recovering. Since we are all
so excited to see the new addition to our “DECA family,” members of the Executive
Board came together for a bonding and gift idea session earlier in the month. We find it
very important to support each other and have officer bonding at least once a month to
help us function better as a team.
Chippewa Valley Technical College – We are planning a ski trip to Christy Mountain on
February 4th. We feel this will be a great way to kick off the spring semester and be able
to get knew members involved.
WITC – Rice Lake – N/A
Western Technical College-La Crosse-N/A
Gateway Technical College-Kenosha – No social events were held due to midterms
and finals.
Waukesha County Technical College-Pewaukee – On November 30th we held a Resume
building workshop. We had a professional resume writer from the Workforce Development
Center come to talk to us about the Do’s and Don’ts of Resumes and what words that you
should and should not have within a Resume. Approximately 20 people attended. We also had a
bowling event on December 2nd and 10 people attended.
Fox Valley Technical College-Oshkosh- Christmas cookie party next week
Fox Valley Technical College-Appleton- N/A
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College- No we have not. After our Christmas vacation,
we are really going to focus on this area. We will probably hold an event at our school
that consists of a soda and pizza party. This event will hopefully attract more members
to our club.
Madison College- Communication through facebook, forging bonds and building our
chapter.
4. What civic consciousness projects have you
worked on? What did you do? How did you
promote chapter participation?
University of Wisconsin Whitewater – As mentioned previously, we are currently
in the process of planning a large-scale Autism Speaks awareness campaign. Since we
wish to make as large of impact as possible with this event, we will be making efforts to
reach out to the community, including businesses, a local elementary school and even
nearby high school DECA chapters. In order to tackle this huge project and give our
members another great opportunity to show their leadership skills, as well as encourage
participation, we have organized a separate committee of general members to head this
project under the supervision of one of our Executive Board members.
Although this campaign will not take place until we return from winter break, in
order to have all of our needed room reservations and sign location spots open, we
must begin planning this early. There will be advertising across campus for a few weeks,
all leading up to the big weeklong event! So far we have only had a few planning
meetings but have already begin taking steps to the success of this project.
For this project we are also reaching out to other student organizations on campus
to assist with gathering awareness pledges from their members. The campaign will be
brought up during the College of Business and Economics Dean Advisory Council
meeting. This is to help spread the word about the event to other organizations and
even reach out to our faculty on a wider scale.
Chippewa Valley Technical College – We held a coat drive and got many donations.
We took half of the coats we received to The Coat Closet in Boyceville, WI and the other
half was donated to The Community Table. There was a group putting on an event for
their Sports and Entertainment and Event Marketing class and they were getting
donations for The Community Table which recently had a fire. We had decided to
donate the remaining coats to them.
WITC – Rice Lake – N/A
Western Technical College-La Crosse – We also held a bake sale to raise money for
autism during our silent auction. Another fundraiser that was held was Wing then Sing
which was karaoke for autism which was organized and put on by a member through
the Project Management class.
Gateway Technical College-Kenosha – We worked at a fundraiser for the local Boys &
Girls club. We served guests at the Pride of Kenosha.
Waukesha County Technical College-Pewaukee – We just finished collecting toys for
the Women’s Shelter in Waukesha. We had 250 items and $155 donated. We promoted
this event by setting up bins in the hallways for people to drop off their donations, we
also talked about it in meetings, had flyers, and put it out though social media. We are
also currently working with Noodles and Company to raise money for Autism Speaks U,
this event will be held later this month.
Fox Valley Technical College-Oshkosh- Change war and brat fry raised a total of $212.31
that is going towards our Autism Speaks fund along with selling autism bracelets which has so
far brought in over $200 in sales
-Currently we are selling personalized Christmas ornaments with all proceeds going to the
Christine Ann Center
Fox Valley Technical College-Appleton- N/A
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College- N/A
Madison College- N/A
5. Are there any unique activities you have done
(i.e. guest speakers, industry visits, etc)? How
did they benefit the chapter and its members?
Please explain.
University of Wisconsin Whitewater – Most of the general member meetings this
month were comprised guest speaker meetings.
The Tuesday before Regionals, we had two members from PDC come to speak to our
group about competitions. They were incredibly helpful to our team because many of
our members are still relatively new to competition. The question and answer time
gave us a lot of helpful feedback and even our experienced members were gaining new
insights. We highly recommend other chapters make use of PDC’s extensive knowledge
on this topic.
Kevin Kiser, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater who now works
with a Marketing team at Core BTW, spoke to us primarily on the topic on personal
branding and how important it is for the success of anyone who wishes to have a future
in business. Core BTS is a nation leading IT solution provider with 12 offices in 7 states
and over 350 employees whose efforts drive $153M+ in annual revenues.
The following week we had a Frank Lanko, a senior business career advisor from
Whitewater, come and help host a resume workshop. It may seem like a dry topic, but
Frank had a lot of passion for the importance of building a resume effectively and was
able to present in a way that was humorous and enjoyable, while still being highly
educating. Having served students and graduates for many years and assisting in the
job search process, he knew a lot of interesting things that many people would not think
about when building a resume. Even members who have previously attended other
resume workshops on or off campus gave very positive feedback.
Like last month, we are continually reaching out to local high school DECA chapters
in an attempt to help prepare them for competition. The Jefferson high school chapter,
being new, asked if we could set up a small presentation for them about competition.
This presentation was lead by one of our Executive Board members, Matthew Ross, and
two general members. The presentation went very well. It was wonderful to help
younger DECA members prepare for competition and we are glad to help out in any way
possible.
In addition to this, a local elementary school has asked for volunteer tutors from our
DECA chapter. Two of our general members were kind enough to volunteer for this
position, which occurs on a weekly basis.
Gateway Technical College- Racine- N/A
Chippewa Valley Technical College – N/A
WITC – Rice Lake – N/A
Western Technical College-La Crosse- N/A
Gateway Technical College-Kenosha – We have not done anything “unique”, but we
do try to make things as interesting and welcoming to everyone.
Waukesha County Technical College-Pewaukee We had Rose from the Workforce
Development Center come to talk to us about Resume building. It was beneficial to the
chapter and its members that showed up because we were taught about what words
that we could use or how to word things so that they would sound professional yet not
use so many words at the same time.
Fox Valley Technical College-Oshkosh- Competitive simulation with alumni
Fox Valley Technical College-Appleton- N/A
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College- We had a guest speaker from Cooks Corner
who informed us about fundraising ideas that they were doing. The benefit of this, was
getting all of our members thinking of ways to raise money in a creative way.
Madison College- N/A
6. Is there anything that the State Action Team is
able to assist you with? If so what? If it
involves a visit from state officers, who would
you like to come? When? (For the State Action
Team to better serve your needs, please list and
explain in detail what it is that we can do for
you. This will ensure better preparation to
accommodate your request)
University of Wisconsin Whitewater – No assistance is needed at the moment, but
we would love to see everyone come visit when we launch our Autism Speaks
awareness campaign (more details will be sent out when we have confirmation on our
reservations).
Chippewa Valley Technical College – Any ideas you can give us for new fundraising
ideas would be great!
WITC – Rice Lake – If there is a representative that could give us some ideas or
thoughts on ways to make our chapter better. Also for potential growth in areas that we
may need assistance in.
Western Technical College-La Crosse- N/A
Gateway Technical College-Kenosha – N/A
Waukesha County Technical College-Pewaukee – Yes. Can we please get the new
rules and regulations on the changes that were made in regards to Civic Consciousness?
Thank you.
Fox Valley Technical College-Oshkosh- N/A
Fox Valley Technical College-Appleton- N/A
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College-N/A
Madison College- N/A
