					                                             2012 Region 4 Competitions
                                      February 22-23, 2012 - Hillsborough County

Purpose: To evaluate each contestant’s preparation for employment and to recognize outstanding students for
excellence and professionalism in the field of esthetics.

All contestants must bring a model for the competition. Clothing Requirement For men:
White dress shirt, black dress slacks, black socks and black work or dress shoes.

For women: White top with collar, black dress slacks, black socks or black or skin-tone hose, and black work or
dress shoes.

Models: Businesslike, white, collarless blouse, black dress slacks or skirt, black or skin-tone hose and black shoes.
Must have hair pulled away from the face with a white or black headband. Must have a clean, cosmetic-free face, and
must not wear jewelry. Jewelry may be worn after the makeup application.

Models will not be required to take a skill-related written test or to submit a resume’.

Orientation / Contest Guidelines: The contest rules will be reviewed at the scheduled orientation, beginning
at 8:00am.Knowledge Performance: The contest will include a skill-related written test assessing knowledge
of esthetics. Contestants will have 30 minutes to complete the exam.

Kit Check:     10 minutes. Kits will be checked by judges after the written test and before the Oral Assessment.

Oral Assessment: Contestants will perform individual five-minute oral assessment. Each contestant will
introduce them self. Each contestants will explain their clients skin type, what products they plan to use and why.
Each contestant will explain the benefits of the facial and the facial products they plan to use.




Decontamination/Safety Standards: contestants will then be escorted to the contest site, in groups of 2-3
students at a time. Contestants must follow sanitation and safety procedures throughout contest. Judges will assess
decontamination and safety practices throughout the contest.

Time limits:
Forty-five minutes for basic facial and ten minutes for facial massage. All segments of work must be completed in the
specified time. *No machines will be used.

Forty-five minutes for daytime cosmetic application / fifteen minutes to turn into evening application.
Contestants will complete makeup applications at the same time after each group has completed the massage and
basic facial.


Disqualification or penalty points taken can occur for the following:
   1. Any rule not followed, with No exceptions!
   2. Leaving the competition area before completion of task(applies to both contestant and model) without
      proper escort
   3. Any product that appears to have been altered. All products and solutions must be properly identified with
      labels.
   4. Professional attitude and communication is expected throughout the contest
   5. Once time is called, the contestant must stop working. Touching the model after time is called will result in
      penalty points (determined by judges)
   6. No cell phones permitted
   7. All products used must be considered safe for application to the skin
   8. Conversation between contestant and model is limited. Any form of communication with observers, judges
      and other contestants is prohibited during the contest.


Standards and Competencies:
Set up and client protection- judged in all areas of contest
    1. Sanitizes hands
    2. Disinfects work area and uses protective covering
    3. Sets up work area with supplies clearly labeled
    4. No cross contamination of product to skin or products
    5. Disinfects and covers chair.
    6. Applies body drape
    7. Applies hair drape

Cleanse
1. Remove eye color using damp cotton pads and eye makeup remover (if needed)
 2.    Remove lip color using a folded tissue or cotton pad (if needed)
 3.    Recommended use of cleanser on the skin
 4.    Avoid over –rubbing or stimulating the skin
 5.    Warm towels may be used prior to cleansing to moisten the skin


 Exfoliate
 1. No machinery allowed


 Steam
 1. Test towels for correct temperature
 2. Nose and mouth should not be covered during steaming with towels


 Mask
 1.   Applied with spatula or brush
 2.   Begin at neck area using long slow strokes from center of face outward
 3.   Proceed to jaw line working from center outward
 4.   Avoid eye area
 5.   While mask is sitting, may perform hand and arm massage


Toner
 1. May be toner, astringent of freshener according to clients skin type
 2. Applied with cotton ball, cotton pad or misted onto the skin


 Moisturizer
 1. Apply with fingertips or applicator




Method of Application
1.    All methods should be done in a smooth consistent manner
2.    Use same order and same numbers of times for each process
3.    Work neatly; avoid getting product in eyes, mouth, ears and nostrils
4.    Contestant may use hands, cotton pads, or sponges
5.    Product should be evenly distributed
       Methods of Removal
        1.   All methods should be done in a smooth consistent manner
        2.   Use same order and same numbers of times for each process
        3.   Work neatly; avoid getting product in eyes, mouth, ears and nostrils
        4.   Contestant may use wet towels, cotton pads, or sponges
        5.   No traces of product should be evident



       Completed within 45 minutes/including workspace set up and cleanup

Knowledge: Express knowledge of subject matter. Contestant is able to orally access and explain procedure,
purpose and benefits of the facial treatment. Contestant has knowledge of their chosen products and how the
products will benefit their client.

Hand sanitation prior to task performance:
Acceptable would be the use of warm water and antibacterial soap or instant hand sanitizers.
Nails are expected to be short, smooth and well filed
No rings, bracelets or other jewelry should be worn (watches are acceptable)

All equipment, implements, tools, and materials shall be cleaned and disinfected and / or hygienically stored prior to task:
All items should be sanitized and stored in closed containers prior to arrival. This may be Ziploc baggies or sealable containers.

All workstation furnishings shall be cleaned and sanitized prior to task:
Prior to beginning a task, workspace shall be sanitized, this includes tables, chairs etc.
Material used for cleaning shall be disposed of properly.




All disposables properly discarded after use:
Immediately following use disposables are to be placed in any from of closed container (Ziploc bags)

All materials must be replaced to avoid cross contamination (towels, brushes, spatulas etc.)
Re-use of an item without proper sanitation is not allowed

No cross contamination of products to skin or skin to product:
All brushes, applicators etc. are only to make contact with a product once prior to being replaced
Removal of product form containers should be done using sanitary methods; this may include use of spatulas, cotton swabs, etc.

All Skills are performed in a safe and sanitary manner:
Proper draping practiced for all services
Hair is securely pulled off of face with headband
Lookout for any potential safety or sanitation violations as are not listed above
Conversation between contestants and models, advisors or others during the contest is limited

A variety of movements are used in a repetitive manner
 Massage is performed using an orderly method (working from chin toward forehead)
