Failure and Leadership are Joined at the Hip; Recovery from Failure is a Key Skill in Business and Life Encounters with failure are a common occurance for all. Engaging in business leadership, and in life we will often encounter failure. That's not the issue; how we deal with it and how we recover from often unfair setbacks is a vital skill for success. Personal buoynacy, the ability to fall down seven times, and get up eight is required for personal and professional leadership success in the 21st century. San Diego, CA (Vocus) October 29, 2009 -- Failure is a part of Ledership; “if you are not failing, you are not leadng,” says Dr. Jim Dillahunty in his latest book Leadership 4.0. One of the most important tests of effective leaders is their ability to bounce back, their buoyancy in the face of catastropy,” muses Dillahunty. There is a great Japanese saying describing this executive and life skill, notes Dillahunty; “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” The requirement for personal and executive buoynacy is in high demand today in light of the recession. Without this skill many many not be able to recover with enough self-confidence to re-engage to pursue their goals. Dr. Dillahunty prepared his latest book based on his experinces as a entrepreneur (founder of AAM, Inc, a multi million dollar trading and service company), his academic research, and his executive experiences. “Each of us has so much familiarity with rejection and failure,” Dr. Dillahunty says, “you‘ld think by the time we reach the executuve suites we could deal with it, but many executives take failure personally, and that is a hugh mistake!” “Failure starts so early in life” observes Dr. Dillahunty, “and parents will soon see angst and desprssion on the faces of their children, as colleges begin to send their letters of acceptance and rejection.” Dr. Dillahunty observed that one high school created a method for students to cope with rejection: They posted their letters of rejection on a “Wall of Shame” to show that failure is an experience common to all. Business executives and entrepeneurs do not have such a cathartic system. They must rely on the learned skill of buoyancy. As Dr. Dillahunty discusses in his book; “If failure knew what a wonderful person you were, it would never visit you. But it doesn’t, so it spreads calamaties around as if they were pixie dust.” This is an important mentoring lesson that soon-to-retire Baby Boom executives need to pass on to upwardly mobile GenXs and GenYs; failure is part of leading. In Leadership 4.0, Dr. Dillahunty discusses the learnable skill of buoyancy and four other vital paradigms of success. “Recovery from failure and dissapointment are required for success; all aspiring leaders need this skill in their executive inventory” says Dr. Dillahunty.
