Sondheim Etc Bernadette Peters Live At Carnegie Hall by Bernadette Peters - 5 Star Review

Sondheim, Etc.: Bernadette Peters Live At Carnegie Hall by Bernadette Peters It's Worth It For The Musical Theatre Buff! This live concert from 1997, a benefit for the Gay Mens Health Crisis, was Bernadette Peterss Carnegie Hall debut, and its a joy. Peters has always had a special affinity for the music of Stephen Sondheim, and she spotlights some of his best songs, only a few of them from the shows shes best known for, Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George. The program is part career retrospective--including non-Sondheim selections from Mack and Mabel and Dames at Sea--and part wish list, which provides a forum for Peterss pouty humor (In this movie [Dick Tracy], this song was sung by a blonde bombshell... not me. Although we both have religious names.). Shes backed by a full orchestra conducted by Marvin Laird, who also directed Peterss similar program a year later at Londons Royal Festival Hall (captured on VHS and DVD). The very appreciative and knowing audience (theres applause at the first words of Dames Raining in My Heart) includes Stephen Sondheim himself. No doubt he was very proud. --David Horiuchi Personal Review: Sondheim, Etc.: Bernadette Peters Live At Carnegie Hall by Bernadette Peters Most people know Bernadette Peters from her film and television performances but it is the stage where she shines. In this compilation from a one night concert benefiting the Gay Men's Health Clinic in New York City at Carnegie Hall, Bernadette sheds some banter and sings some of Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents' music from their musicals. Her musical voice is far better than her actual voice which is kind of cute and memorable. She has fun recalling songs that she didn't sing but she liked too. In this performance, she does deliver in every song that she sung. She had played Mama Rose Lee in Gypsy and in the musical, "Into the Woods," as well as so many other Broadway classics. She has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Live Theatre not film, television or recording because it's live theatre where Bernadette Peters shines as a star.
