Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, October is an exciting month at Drew. We have invited the community for two major events: a Blessing of the Animals on October 3rd and a Silent Auction on October 17th. Just as we moved our Fall Barbecue and Balloon Launch out onto the front lawn, for greater visibility and hospitality, so we seek through these events to let the community know we are a vital, warm, loving community with a lot of positive energy, ready to welcome them and grow spiritually with them. September events and programs also reached out; our Employment Workshop, Thrift Shop Lawn Sale and Lobster Dinner are three examples. So is the ongoing Healing Prayer class, now offered on Wednesday nights. Please pray for all who are being ministered to through these programs and events. God Bless you,
The Rev. Karen A. Burger, Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Drew United Methodist Church Family: The Silent Auction is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2009, and it is quickly coming upon us. There is a busy flurry of church members visiting local merchants and cleaning house looking for items to donate to the auction. Thank you to those members that are helping this auction to be a success. It is not too late for everyone to get involved. We are still in need of merchant gift certificates, antiques, jewelry, collectibles, new items, gift baskets, and personal services. If you are in doubt please do not hesitate in calling me at 845-628-6620. The holidays will be here soon, so please tell your family and friends about our great auction. We need lots of people to attend and bid on items. Thank you in advance for all your help. God bless you all! Lorraine Quigg Chairperson
“GREENING” THE CHURCH THROUGH RECYCLING We would like to recycle as many waste products as we can to protect the environment. Please remember the following: 1. Our recycling center will only accept numbers 1 or 2 plastics. All other plastics should be thrown in the garbage. Numbers 1 or 2 plastics should be placed in the recycling bins in the kitchen or the bin outside the kitchen door. 2. Corrugated cardboard (cardboard with lines in it) is recyclable and should also be placed in one of the above mentioned bins. 3. All office paper printed or not is recyclable and there are boxes in the narthex and the church office where you can deposit paper. Thank you for your help. -Jim MacDonald
Thrift Shop News We had a great turnout for our lawn sale on September 12th. The customers loved it; in fact, one lady stayed all day, shopping from 9 am, when we opened, until just before we closed at 3 pm. Her husband pulled up with their pickup truck and loaded all her “finds” in the back. She smiled, he shrugged, and we gladly waved goodbye to all the merchandise that wouldn’t need to be returned to the shop. By the end of the sale, we had brought in more than $1,400 from sales inside and outside the shop. Thanks to all those who helped and all those who shopped. (Some of us did both.) We also opened the Thrift Shop during the all-church barbecue and Sunday School Rally Day festivities. For some in the congregation, this marked their first time in the Thrift Shop. They learned what many of us already know: it’s almost impossible to leave the shop empty-handed. On October 24th we’ll be closing our doors for the season. As we approach the closing date, please watch for sales and stop in when you have a chance. See you at the shop!

Scripture Hike September 20th There were TEN hikers this past weekend who ventured out on a gorgeous day. We hiked the Appalachian Trail from Sunken Mine Road for nearly 2 hours until our destination of Route 301 where the Trail momentarily breaks off to cross the street. Through this part of the trail hikers get to cross over parts of the Viaduct...an incredible sight to see these boulders and rocks that were moved to form this link of the Trail. We were thrilled to have challenging moments as well as serene ones. We even had an encounter with a small tree frog who was more than happy to pose for pictures. The beauty of God's world is all around us. These hikes, complete with readings from the Bible, are a wonderful connection to that beauty. There will be one more hike scheduled for this year. It will be on Sunday October 25th- see the article later on in this issue. Come join us!

The Board of Trustees continues with exciting news to share with the congregation. We have been lucky enough to have 3 Eagle Scout candidates working on various projects around the church. These projects include the refurbishment of the garage next to the parsonage, refurbishment of the barn behind the thrift shop, and refurbishment of the stage in our gym. We look forward to supporting these scouts as they take on big projects that will make our church and grounds look all the more exceptional. The Board of Trustees continues to look into multiple projects involving our current heating systems, continuance towards a “greener” church, and piano refurbishment. Comments always welcome!

The Hand of God When I was very young, I think I was in the third grade, I began to learn how to play the violin. Very soon I was making sounds that didn’t make teeth hurt and so my folks took me to Pelham to play for my grandparents. I played “Little Rose Bud.” It was my first concert. My grandparents were mostly homebound because they didn’t have a car and had no good access to mass transit. Even on Sundays, they worshipped from home as they listened to their favorite Methodist service on the radio. My grandfather would sit in his rocker and my grandmother was on the couch. They participated in the service as much as possible including humming the tunes of the hymns. Having been pleased with my violin performance, my grandmother asked me to learn her favorite hymn, “Blessed Assurance”. I was reminded of all this as we sang the very same and beloved hymn at a Drew service in September. There are many, many stories about the ways in which the church enriches and ennobles our lives. The wonderful memory of the smile on my grandmother’s face as I played “Blessed Assurance” is but one. At a recent celebration of Carmel Alumni, I once again heard of the many ways that Drew Church played a powerful role in many lives. On the way home I came up with another one of my bright ideas. I decided to visit Drew as it was 50 years ago and 75 years ago. In October, 1959, the pastor was George Weyand assisted by a divinity student named Lloyd Chapin. The minister of music was Dorothy Nyce. Like today, every Sunday was a busy one. The day began with an 8 o’clock communion service followed by Sunday school and a special parent’s service at 9:30. The main service came at 11AM. The day ended with meetings of the Junior and Senior Methodist Youth Fellowship groups. Dorothy Nyce led the choir which enriched the service much as ours does today. Normally, Rev. Weyand delivered sermons such as “Responsible Christians” and occasionally Rev. Chapin or a guest preacher substituted for Mr. Weyand. As with today, Drew church didn’t cease to function after Sunday. The thrift shop was open on Thursdays. Meanwhile, the PM Club was busy putting the finishing touches for its fall performance of “Howie.” The play was directed by Isobel Rose Jones and the cast included Barbara Brown, Herb Colcord, Lyn McCleod, Betty McCreary, Dan Mooney, Robert Owen and a fellow named Donald Townsend. The Courier devoted two major articles in anticipation of the performance. The world of Drew in 1934 was less familiar. Hamburger cost 19 cents a pound. The local movies were shown once a week at Carmel High School. Baseball ruled the sports world and in August of that year, a fellow named Claude Swanson helped lead Jerry’s All-Stars to a win over the Mahopac Fire Department. Claude, a member of Drew Church, is still alive and kicking, but I don’t think he plays right field anymore. At Drew, the reverend was Earl Scott and Hattie Merrick played the organ. Reverend Scott alternated preaching duties with guest speakers and the choir played its usual role. The Epworth League was active and there was the standard Methodist chicken pot pie supper. October saw two special events. On the 10th, the church celebrated the 69 th anniversary of the church building (making October 10, 2009 the 144th anniversary). A few days later, a major social event took place at Drew when Mildred Dykeman and E Birdsall O’Dell were married before more than 150 people. Though I must admit that I skipped over most of the bride details, The Courier devoted major coverage to the wedding. However, the article did mention that one of the bridesmaids was Natalie Townsend. So the circle is complete. The hand of God is seen in many ways. It is seen in the quiet peace brought to my grandmother as she hummed her favorite hymn. It is seen in the many ways that the hand of God worked through Drew church to guide the lives of the young people who attended the church. It is seen in the way in which the church helps to build and strengthen our communities. It is seen in the ways that the church reinforces our families and sanctifies the essential institution of marriage. In the great masterpiece by Michelangelo, the lifeless body of Adam lies prone, hand extended, awaiting the hand of God to give life. It is a magnificent representation. But like all great art, we are given many ways to look at the painting. Here is an alternative. In this one, it is the hand of God that is extended. It waits for Adam to reach out so that meaning can be given to life already granted. Adam is free, by the grace of God. He can take the hand of God or not. Should he do so, then purpose, richness and, yes, forgiveness is his. Should he choose not to, then the emptiness of Godlessness awaits.

I‟m a Christian -Maya Angelou When I say… “I am a Christian,” I‟m not shouting, “I‟m clean living.” I‟m whispering, “I was lost, now I‟m found and forgiven.” When I say… “I am a Christian,” I don‟t speak of this with pride. I „m confessing that I stumble and need CHRIST to be my guide. When I say… “I am a Christian,” I‟m not trying to be strong. I‟m professing that I‟m weak and need HIS strength to carry on. When I say… “I am a Christian,” I‟m not bragging of my success. I‟m admitting I have failures and need God to clean my mess. When I say… “I‟m a Christian,” I‟m not claiming to be perfect. My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it. When I say… “I‟m a Christian,” I still feel the sting of pain. I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.
When I say… “I am a Christian,” I‟m not holier-than-thou. I‟m just a simple sinner who received God‟s grace, somehow. -submitted by Donna Lou Salatino

A Celebration of Life: Tribute Gifts
Tribute gifts are an excellent way to acknowledge special occasions in the lives of loved ones and friends. Instead of presents, Tribute Gifts can be given to celebrate birthdays, holidays, graduations, anniversaries or any other significant life event, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Confirmation. Tribute gifts are a very special way to honor the memory of a deceased friend, relative or colleague while conveying your sympathy to the family on the loss of their loved one. Contributing to Drew United Methodist Church in someone’s name is a living gift that continues to give through the ongoing ministries of Drew Church. Simply fill out the Tribute Gift form and send your donation (in any amount) payable to Drew United Methodist Church to: Drew UMC PO Box 900 Carmel, NY 10512 An acknowledgement of your Tribute Gift will be sent to the person or family you have designated. You will receive a
personal acknowledgement for your tax-deductible gift and your name will be listed in The Bell, our church newsletter. Thank you!
