Prayer for the Sick
Lord Jesus, Who went about doing good and healing all, we ask You to bless Your friends who are sick. Give them the strength in body, courage in spirit, and patience in pain. Let them recover their health, so that, restored to the Christian community, they may joyfully praise Your Name, for You live and reign forever and ever. Amen. Father, Your Son accepted our sufferings to teach us the virtue of patience in human illness. Hear the prayers we offer for our sick brothers and sisters. May all who suffer pain, illness or disease, realize that they are chosen to be saints, and know that they are joined to Christ in His suffering for the salvation of the world, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

WORLD MISSION DAY CELEBRATIONS
World Mission day will be celebrated this Sunday, October 21, by Church services around Australia. The services will reflect on the work of mission and also the contribution of young people who are in involved in missionary activities. Pope Benedict has called on the "People of God" to reflect on the role of the Church's missions. “I ask the bishops, priests, men and women, religious and lay to reflect together on the urgency and the importance of the Church's missionary activity also in our day,” the Pope said. “We are all missionaries, all sent by the Lord to be His witnesses in every moment of our life." The Catholic Mission is calling on the community to celebrate World Mission Day by making a donation. The money raised will help thousands of communities in 160 countries around the world. World Mission day will be celebrated at appeals throughout the Parish. Guest speaker at all Masses except the 9.00 (STM) and the 6.15 (SFX) Masses. Appeal envelopes are on the pews
AUSTRALIAN CATHOLICS’ SADNESS OVER NUNCIO DE PAOLI'S DEATH
The President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Philip Wilson has expressed great sadness at the death of the Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, Archbishop Ambrose De Paoli. Archbishop De Paoli, who had been diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2005, died at Mt Sinai Hospital, Miami Beach in the United States on Wednesday evening Australian time. He was 73. He had returned to the United States and died peacefully after farewelling family and having received the last rites. In a letter of condolence to the Vatican‟s Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Archbishop Wilson said that all the bishops of Australia had very much come to appreciate the care and dedication with which he carried out his mission from the Holy See in Australia. “During His Excellency‟s relatively short time with us, we were touched by the humble and gracious way that he dealt with bishops, priests and all the people with whom he had contact,” Archbishop Wilson said. “Archbishop De Paoli‟s personable and friendly demeanour allowed him to mix easily with those he met at the many and varied functions and activities he attended which make up Catholic life in Australia. “Above all, his love and fidelity for Jesus Christ and the Church, and his loyal service to the Holy Father was always most evident.” Various individual Masses will be held around Australia for the repose of Archbishop De Paoli‟s soul in coming days

FR. TERRY BRADY, NEW BISHOP FOR SYDNEY, TO BE CONSECRATED.
Pope Benedict has appointed Reverend Father Terence John Brady as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Sydney. In an invitation to all parishes in the Archdiocese, Cardinal George Pell extends an invitation to attend the ordination of Bishop-Elect Terry Brady. In a tribute to Fr. Bardy, Cardinal Pell said. "He is a man with a deep love of God and loyalty to the church. He is highly respected as a man who has demonstrated wonderful pastoral care for the people of Sydney." The Australian Associated Press reported Bishop Brady, 60, will join Bishop Julian Porteous and Bishop Anthony Fisher as the third bishop in the archdiocese of Sydney. He will be ordained at St Mary's Cathedral on November 16. The ceremony will commence at 7.30 – all are asked to be seated by 7.15.
MEN’S NIGHT OF SPIRITUALITY Dr. Frank Brennan is one of our three speakers on the evening of the 14th November
Frank Brennan is a Sydney physician whose gift is caring for the dying and their families. Frank worked for the Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern, as a paediatrician in South Africa, and for the Sacred Heart Hospice before specialising in palliative care. Silence is an important tool in his work, says Frank. "Simply allowing someone to tell their story is sometimes the greatest professional gift I can give... We don't have the answer to so many of these mysteries and we cannot pretend we do." Frank first became aware of what doctors do as a boy, when his 11 year old brother Tom died from bone cancer. In those days, he recalls, there was virtually no bereavement support and the effect of the tragedy on his parents has stayed with him. "I reflect on that a lot now, in terms of the importance of people having some degree of support, professional or otherwise; in terms of being left to their own sadness, their own grief. Because that may extend for the rest of their lives and it may be very unresolved." person is aware of what we call the 'loved voices', the voices of the family and the relations around them. "That can be very reassuring to the relatives who need to be saying a little bit more to that person." In that situation, he encourages people to sit and hold the hand of their loved one. "And keep talking, because that person will still know you're there." Please refer to the insert at the back of this Bulletin
Healing Masses in the Parish
Perhaps one of the best kept secrets of this parish is the Healing Mass which takes place at 10.30 on the last Wednesday of every month unless notified otherwise. All are invited. It takes place at a special Mass in the Marist Brothers‟ Monastery at 10.30am and is followed by morning tea. We usually have thirty people who attend. During the Mass we have an anointing ceremony. On the same day we have an anointing Mass at the James Milson Retirement Village in the hostel section. This Mass is coordinated by Gabriel Sivertsen. Again the anointing of the sick is conferred after the Homily.
4
At each of our four Masses during the day – 7.00, 12.00 & 5.30 (St.Mary) and 12.10 (St. FX) – the anointing of the sick is conferred on all who seek the sacrament at the conclusion of Mass.

Last year we gained a list of well over 2,100 names. The names of this list will be bound in three books and placed on the altars of our three churches. People are free to peruse these books. We are interested in misspellings – sometimes it is very difficult to decipher some handwriting. A new list will go on the walls of the Church announcing those who have died of recent memory or those who did not get on last years list. A form will go into the extended Bulletin next weekend seeking names for this list. Understanding other faiths: Islam A lecture series of three sessions on Islam will commence next Thursday 6.30pm 25th October at St Francis Xavier Lavender Bay Fr Herman Roborgh S.J., PhD, a scholar in Islamic studies, will conduct these sessions over three successive Thursdays, 25 October, 1st November and 8th November. Each session will start at 6.30pm and end at 8.30pm, with a small supper break. Details are now available in the brochure available at the church. Please do not let the registration fee deter you from attending. It is simply meant to defray costs and provide a small stipend for Fr Herman now situated at Emerton (Mt Druitt). Teresa House A volunteer drive will take place next weekend of 27th and 28th October at North Sydney, Lavender Bay and Kirribilli. We are in urgent need of new volunteers as the numbers have dwindled down. We especially have a need for men on the overnight shift.
