Abstract:
Searching for and finding information is one of the most important problems in the world
today, and large scale internet search tools, such as Google and Yahoo, have gained wide
popularity among ordinary users. On the other hand, recommendation systems
proactively push relevant information to the user without requiring explicit queries from
the user, and they are widely used in e-commerce web sites such as Amazon and Netflix.
This talk will provide an overview of search and recommendation (i.e. proactive search)
technologies, including the history, the major techniques used by search engines, and
what the next generation search may look like. We will also show some demo systems
that we use for research.
