• 1957 - Sputnik - first satellite
       wanted to create network that would be safe in case of attack


• 1960s - Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) -
       • govt makes computers more interactive, packets of info


• 1969 - connected 4 universities w. Internet                          (UCLA,
  Stanford, UCSB and Utah)


• 1970s -many more universities connected,
   – bulletin board system (UseNet)


• 1971 -first e-mail, “@” symbol used to denote address
                   The Internet
• 1973 -       first international connection to London

• 1975 - first modern e-mail program created

• Mid 1970s - Bulletin Board System - venue for sharing
       and discussion

• 1978 - SPAM created (unsolicited commercial e-mail)

• Late 1970s - Personal Computers (PCs)

• 1982 - The first emoticon used    :-)

• 1984 - Domain Name System (DNS) created. Easier way
       than using IP address (numerical, such as 198.223.0.44)
                    The Internet
• 1991 - World Wide Web created - linked info system
      • 200 sites the first year


• 1993 - first Web browser (Mosaic), allowed graphics
      • Boom in Web usage
      • 6 00% growth rate
      • Netscape Navigator launched the following year


• 1995 - Web goes commercial & AOL /Compuserv
     =Internet access for the masses
      • 6 million sites… and growing… and growing


• 1998 - Google! Revolutionized searching on web

2004 - Facebook      2005 - YouTube                  2006 - Twitter
2007 - iPhone and the mobile web
