ORB (Brest Retirees Association) a picture of the older people in Brest
In 2006 this important association counted 2700 members. ORB is in touch with (less or more directly) 8300 people (information, conferences, meetings in different districts in Brest). Necessary condition to become a member: age > 50 and a low contribution The total population in Brest is 150 000 inhabitants. 30 % this population is an age > 50 so there are 45000 people this age. We can say more than 1 inhabitant in Brest is a member of this association. Aims: To provide social activities for seniors and to reduce social isolation. Physical activities (walking, golf, swimming etc…): 1600 members Intellectual/artistic/cultural activities: 800 members (Among them: video: 40 computer & internet: 180 painting: 71) 2 choirs – groups of traditional dances, country dances Numerous conferences (varied topics: cooking, health, laws….) Trips: abroad or in France Memory workshops: 100 members (partnership with an insurance company) (Brain and memory training – to keep members mentally fit) Solidarity activities - “Roul’age” workshop: to help jobless people to re-enter working world 20 retirees, former craftsmen or workmen, teach their skills - to help primary school children to fulfil their potential in school: 172 members - Phone listening “ALMA” (To support older people affected by domestic abuses or violence) 8 members - “Part’Age” operations: sharing a flat or a house between an elderly people and a young student – the student has to provide his owner with practical help - International Solidarity Committee: operations for/with Senegal, Mali, Lebanon
