Resolution from AAUP
A Resolution In Support of Reese Library
Whereas, the members of the academic community of Augusta State University have been full
partners with our Reese Library and University Administration in building and maintaining
information resource collections to support the curricular and research endeavors of the
faculty; and
Whereas, the faculty of Augusta State University intend to continue this partnership as we
consolidate with Georgia Health Sciences University to form Georgia Regents University
Augusta; and
Whereas, one of the primary goals of the upcoming consolidation is to form Georgia Regents
University Augusta as a comprehensive research (R1) university, thereby necessitating an
increase in the need for information resources and systems throughout our University; and
Whereas, the faculty and students of our University will require increased access to a current
and broad spectrum of high quality scholarly information resources and systems in order to
conduct and report research, prepare for teaching, prepare grant applications, and successfully
complete assignments and projects; and
Whereas, the price of information resources and systems will increase for all academic
disciplines because of vendor pricing models, which consider the new consolidated number of
faculty and students, the change of the university’s status to R1, and inflationary factors; and
Whereas, funding for several of the core information resources and systems as Augusta State
University has been effected in part with “soft” money, such as Augusta State Student
Technology Fees, funding which is not projected to be sufficiently and reliably available in
future budgets; and
Whereas, unless there is budgetary intervention, the predictable effect of these price increases
coupled with the potential loss of funding allocations is a significant reduction in access to
current journals, media, databases, and other information resources and systems; and
Whereas, these changes in conditions will affect our University’s ability to support the
information resource and system needs of new and existing academic programs;
Be it resolved that that the faculty of Augusta State University urge the Administration of our
current and future University to fund full support for our University’s libraries and their
information technology support units; and
Be it further resolved that this funding be sufficient to support the maintenance and growth of
our libraries and their information technology support units, in order to meet the existing and
future need for scholarly information resources of our University’s faculty and students.
