Do you suffer from ‘Bright, Shiny, Object’ Syndrome?
Have you got what is commonly becoming known as Entrepreneurial
If so, you can be cured!
All it takes is a crystal clear business vision!
As part of a new course I’ve recently launched for the members of The SNA, one of
the first things I have asked them to do is to really hammer out what the vision of
their business is.
What does it look like, how does it feel, who are the core customers, what is the core
message, what are the values of the business, what are it’s goals.
Why is this important? Well a good friend once said to me ‘How can you determine
your direction, if you don’t know your destination?’
How true this is!
A récent customer survey told me that one of the main
things holding people back from achieving their goals was a
lack of focus and clarity. Too many distractions and unclear
The only way you can keep yourself from all those bright shiny objects and gain the
kind of focus and clarity needed to grow a successful business is to know exactly
where you want to go!
So here are some tips to creating a vision for you & your company some of which
have been inspired by the fantastic report written by Jim Collins the author of
‘From Good to Great’.
Tip 1 – Read the Collins Report & Read From Good to Great! The Collins report
will take you 10 – 20 mins to read and is a fantastic system for creating your
Tip 2 – Spend time thinking about you and your life first. Why are you starting a
business in the first place? What do you want to achieve? Where do you want to
live? Who do you want to be around? What would you like to spend your days
doing? How much money every month do you need to live the life you want? By
determining exactly the kind of life you want to live and how much you need to live
it, you’ll have a much clearer idea of the kind of business you want to create!
Tip 3 – Create a picture board of your perfect day! A picture says a thousand
words! Place your picture board somewhere prominent so you can look at it every
day and know why it is you’re doing what you’re doing! (Believe me this will inspire
you through the toughest days!)
Tip 4 – Take time out to think about your core values (these will form the values of
your business) that will stand the test of time, no matter what happens to the
market! These are the underlying principles of your business that will remain
forever unchanging and will speak to your market over and above any product
campaigns or promotions you do.
Tip 5 – What’s the purpose of your business? What is the absolute biggest thing
you want to achieve with your business and I urge you to look outside of yourself for
this answer. Richard Branson once said “I can honestly say that I have never gone
into any business purely to make money. If that is the sole motive, then I believe
you are better off not doing it.”
Walt Disney’s purpose was to hghghghghhghghghhghghghhghghghhhhghghghhgh
“Make People Happy”. Steve Jobs ghghghhghghghhghghghghghhghghghghghghhghgh
purpose was to “Make innovative, ghghghghhghghghghhghghghghghghhghghghhghgh
robust and beautiful products ghghhghghghghghghhghghghghhghghghghhghghgh
that delighted customers” ghghhghghghhghghghghghghhghghghghhghghghgh
What’s Your Purpose? hhghghghhghghghhhghghghghghghghhghghghghgh
Tip 5 – Start with the end in hghhghghghghghghhghghghghghhghghghghghhghg
mind! Think about where you ghghghghghhghghghghhghghghhghghghhghghghgh
want your business to be in 1 years hghghghghghhghghhghghghhghghghghghhgghghgh
time, 5 years time, even 10 / 20 hghghghhghghghghghghhghghghhhghghhghghghhg
years time if you like. I have to say hghghghghghhgghhghghghhghghghghghghhghghgh
I have an overall picture of where I ghghghghhghghghhghghghhghghghhghghghhhghgh
want to be in 20 years inspired by ghghhghghghghghghhghghghghghhghghghghghghg
seeing Brian Tracy speaking live at hghhghghgghhghghghghghhghghghghhgghhghghgh
an event I attended! I saw him on ghghghhghghghghhghghghhghghhghghghghghghhg
stage a few years ago, (he would
have been maybe 63 / 64), and he
had so much energy and passion for his topic that out of all the speakers it was he,
who left the biggest impression on me and I thought, that’s what I want to do! I
want to spend my life impacting audiences and inspiring people to create better
businesses, better lives, better everything!
However, as far as my current business venture goes, I really don’t look much
further than 12 months at the moment! The online world is changing so very fast,
it’s difficult to imagine where our businesses may be in a few years! So envision as
far as you think feasible!
Tip 6 – Write down your BHAG! (Big Hairy Audacious Goal!) What is your
absolutely out there, HUMUNGUS goal or goals for your business! What makes you
really excited and also a bit scared at the same time!!! Put pen to paper and make it
Tip 7 – Take a day out to plan! I searched on google for a saying I heard ages ago
about planning versus execution and it was actually Brian Tracy who said it in a free
goals report he released – Click Here for Report. (Please note there are links to
his products on there, but I’m not an affiliate).
He said – The rule is that each minute spent in planning saves 10 minutes in
execution. This means that you get a 1000% return on your investment of time in
planning your days, weeks and months in advance.
So take a day out and plan your business goals, these are movable feasts and are
separate from your core values. These will change with time and the market, but
take the time to set them in the first place as again this will really help you with
focus, clarity and direction!
Tip 8 – GET EXCITED!!!! As good old Napoleon Hill said – “Whatever the mind of
man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. Thoughts are things! And powerful
things at that, when mixed with definiteness of purpose, and burning desire, can
be translated into riches!”
I’d love to hear about your business and your vision! Please let me know your
