Speaker Biographies
Julie Baumgardner is the executive director of First Things First, a grassroots organization dedicated to strengthening families in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Ms. Baumgardner has worked in the fields of marketing and counseling for nearly 20 years. Prior to joining First Things First, she was the marketing director at East Ridge Hospital and Valley Hospital, where she was also a social worker and program director for the child and adolescent program. Ms. Baumgardner frequently speaks on family, parenting, and marriage issues. She has a weekly column on family issues in the Chattanooga Times-Free Press.

Matt Daniels is founder and president of the Alliance for Marriage (AFM), a multicultural coalition based in Washington, D.C. The Alliance for Marriage works on a range of issues including reducing the marriage tax penalty on families, increasing tax credits for adoption, and stopping the welfare system from penalizing welfare recipients who choose to marry. In 2001, Mr. Daniels drafted the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA), and in 2004, he won President Bush’s endorsement and spearheaded votes in both Houses of Congress. Mr. Daniels is an attorney with a doctorate in politics from Brandeis University.

Stephen A. Friess works with Friess Associates and manages the Brandywine Funds. He is president of the Jackson Hole Institute and participates in the grantmaking activities of the Lynn and Foster Friess Family Foundation.

Wade F. Horn, Ph.D., is the Assistant Secretary for Children and Families at the United States Department of Health and Human Services. As Assistant Secretary he has played a key role in implementing several of President Bush’s initiatives to strengthen children and families through a variety of social programs. Prior to his appointment at ACF, Dr. Horn was president of the National Fatherhood Initiative, whose mission is to improve child well-being by increasing the proportion of children growing up with involved, committed, and responsible fathers in their lives. Dr. Horn is frequently featured on national television and radio and has authored numerous articles and books on children and family issues. He received his Ph.D. in clinical child psychology from Southern Illinois University in 1981.

Jeff Kemp is the executive director of Families Northwest. In his position at Families Northwest, Mr. Kemp is passionate about casting a vision for improving family life and fostering a marriage movement in Washington State. His team networks with leaders from all segments of society—business, community, church, government, and media. Mr. Kemp received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Pepperdine University. He played in the NFL as a quarterback for 11 years with the Rams, 49ers, Seahawks, and Eagles. He has written for numerous publications, including The Seattle Times, USA Today, and The American Enterprise.

Hugh O. Maclellan Jr. is president of The Maclellan Foundation, a grantmaking foundation established in 1945 by the Maclellan family. The vision of the Maclellan family is to provide financial and leadership resources to strategic local, national, and international organizations that are committed to furthering the Kingdom of Christ. Mr. Maclellan helped organize and run four entrepreneurial efforts in Chattanooga: First Things First, which aims to reduce the number of divorces and out-of-wedlock pregnancies, as well as increase paternal involvement in the lives of children; Children’s First, which provides scholarships; Front Porch Alliance, which builds partnerships to empower churches, community, and business to work together; and the city-wide 40-Day Purpose Driven Life Program. In addition, he also serves on the boards of Generous Giving and the Chattanooga Resource Foundation. He is chairman of The Jesus Film Development Board. Mr. Maclellan received a B.A. from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Finance.

Adam Meyerson joined The Philanthropy Roundtable as president in 2001. Previously Mr. Meyerson served as vice president for educational affairs at the Heritage Foundation, where he directed Heritage’s civil society projects, its programs on the Founding Fathers, and its “No Excuses” project on high-performing, high-poverty schools. From 1983 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of Heritage’s magazine, Policy Review. Previously, Mr. Meyerson was an editorial writer for the Wall Street Journal and editor of its “Manager’s Journal” and “Asia” columns. Mr. Meyerson is co-editor of The Wall Street Journal on Management, a book published by Dow Jones-Irwin in 1985. He was also managing editor of The American Spectator magazine.

Stephanie Saroki is director of K-12 education programs for The Philanthropy Roundtable. Previously, she was a Teach For America Corps member in Oakland, California, where she taught high school English. Ms. Saroki attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University as a dean’s fellow and earned a master of public policy degree. Her work there focused on child, family, and education policy, and her master's thesis explored marriage policy and welfare reform. Ms. Saroki served as an intern at the Office of Management and Budget and worked on the regulations for the No Child Left Behind Act.

David M. Stanley is chairman of New Hope Foundation. He and his wife, Jeanie, are leaders in United Marriage Encounter, served as its Executive Couple, and have copresented more than 100 Marriage Encounter Weekends. They are active in the United Methodist Church and its renewal and reform movement. In addition, Mr. Stanley is chairman of National Taxpayers Union and of Public Interest Institute. He is founder and CEO of Pearl Mutual Funds. He was elected six times to the Iowa Legislature and served as House Ways & Means Chairman and Senate Majority Leader.

Steve Taylor is the retired chairman and chief executive officer of Fresh Express. Mr. Taylor is the grandson of Bruce Church, founder of Bruce Church, Inc. and Fresh Express Incorporated. Mr. Taylor earned his B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MBA from Harvard Business School. He is currently consulting for Fresh Express, serves on several boards, and is involved in various public policy and cultural issues.

Clarence Walker is founder of Clarence Walker Ministries and the pastor and founder of the Fresh Anointing Christian Center. He has ministered with his wife, Ja’Ola, for 30 years across denominational and ethnic lines. They have special expertise with ministering to the African-American family. Dr. Walker received a Ph.D. in Biblical counseling from Trinity Theological Seminary, an MSW from Temple University, and a BSW from Eastern College. He earned a Graduate Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Marriage Council of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Walker is a Certified Marriage & Family Therapist who had a private practice for 12 years.

Roland C. Warren is president of the National Fatherhood Initiative. Prior to NFI, Mr. Warren worked as a financial consultant for Goldman, Sachs, and Co. in Philadelphia. He has also worked as an associate director of development for his undergraduate alma mater, Princeton University, and in management positions for both IBM and PepsiCo. Prior to his current position, he had served as a member of NFI’s board of directors. Mr. Warren received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

W. Bradford Wilcox, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Virginia and also serves as a resident fellow at the Institute for American Values. His areas of study include religion, fatherhood, marriage, and parenting. He is currently a member of the James Madison Society at Princeton University. Dr. Wilcox has previously held research fellowships at the Brookings Institution, Princeton University, Yale University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
