What is Autism????

Autism or the hygienists named it as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is a life-long
developmental disability that prevents people from understanding what they see, hear, and
otherwise sense. The sufferers will be difficult to comprehend the entire stimulus from their
body sense. These create severe problems with social relationships, communication, and
behavior. The problems appear as an obstacle for them who suffer this disability for being
normal in their life.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM-IV (American Psychiatric
Association, 1994) defines autism as the breakage in gaining communication and social
interaction also the limitation of imitating the patterns of behavior, interest, and activities.
Those are the major characteristics of autism as a pervasive developmental disorder.



What is the Characteristic of Autism ???

ASD is a complex neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain. But not all
people with autism have the same characteristics. Some people with autism have normal
levels of intelligence, while most people with autism have some level of intellectual
disability, ranging from mild to severe. But generally, people with autism do not develop
their functional speech up to 50%. In this case, speech may have unusual qualities and have
limited communicative functions.

All people with autism have difficulties with social interaction and behavior, but the extent
and type of difficulty may vary. Some individuals may be very withdrawn, while others may
be overly active and approach people in peculiar ways. They often respond to sensory stimuli
in an atypical manner and may exhibit odd behaviors such as hand flapping, spinning, or
rocking. They may also demonstrate unusual uses of objects and attachments to objects.
Although people with autism share some common features, there is no two individuals are the
same.

How About The Prevalence of Autism ???

The generally accepted prevalence rate for autism has been between four and five in every
10,000 births. However, some recent estimates suggest the rate is about 10 in 10,000 or 0.1%
of children. There is a higher prevalence among males. The studies reinforcement this theory
by the revealed rate male-to-female ratio of between 3:1 and 4:1.

Why This Can be Happened ???

The cause or combination of causes of autism is not fully known. There is growing evidence
that autism is a genetic condition. The mode of genetic transmission appears complex, and
scientists are focusing their work on finding which genes may be involved and how these
genes are affected. So far, it appears that for at least a significant subgroup of persons with
autism, there is a genetic susceptibility which differs across families (that is, different genes
may be responsible in different families).

Biologically, the brains of individuals with autism have some differences in its structure and
function from the brains of other people.
