1989 movie batmobile 1:50 scale batmoblie batman car An Iconic Vehicle 1:50 SCALE DIE CAT REPLICAS OF THE BATMOBLIE CHOCKING HAZARD - CONTAINS SMALL PARTS - NOT FOR CHILDREN UNDER 3 Personal Review: 1989 movie batmobile 1:50 scale batmoblie batman car It's hard to describe what it was like being a teenager back in the summer of 1989. Bat-mania was everywhere. The yellow egg-shaped Bat emblem was everywhere. I confess I was one of the few who didn't have one the T-shirts, but the image was all over. If Star Wars had begun the movie marketing craze a dozen years earlier, than this was the concept at its most bold (at least until 10 years later when Star Wars practically reinvented it all over again with the glorious insanity surrounding Episode I yes I was caught up in that, too and it was fantastic). Several images were part of the campaign for this film, not just the emblem itself or Jack Nicholson's Joker or Michael Keaton in the title character's unmistakable garb. One of the most distinctive images from the film and its accompanying marketing blitz was the one here: a completely redesigned Batmobile. For 2 decades prior to that time, the image in most people's heads when you said 'Batmobile' was the modified Ford Futura driven by Adam West's Batman in the 1966 TV series (which is also featured in this Hot Wheels series). But this was not just something new. It was the concept of the Batmobile pushed to an extreme, an audacious one at the time (at least until Christopher Nolan went to an entirely different extreme with the Tumbler in Batman Begins 16 years later). This 1989 Batmobile was the essence of comic book superhero cool, its appearance in the film one of my favorite moments in the movie. So, it was a great thrill to see Hot Wheels make the 1989 Batmobile a part of their 1:50 scale Batmobile series. For me, this one is the real jewel of the bunch, though I have all the others so far released and am glad to have them. This one, though, arrived today and now sits prominently on my desk. Unlike the others in the series, this one has the added feature of a sliding canopy, which opens to reveal the passenger compartment. Not sure how durable the toy overall would be if played with roughly by a child, but my impression is that this series is aimed at Hot Wheels collectors (which I usually am not) and Batman fans (which I most definitely am). The Series 2 items in the 1:50 collection were not on the shelves long before they disappeared, but this particular item I had to order from Amazon. It's also worth noting that the back of the package (see my customer image) has other Series 2 items listed; though the Batwing (also from the 1989 film and an iconic image in its own right) and Batpod (from The Dark Knight) pictured on the packaging do not appear to have been released yet, at least not that I've been able to find up to now, anywhere on shelves or online. Looking forward to collecting these as well if they ever become available. This 1989 Batmobile would be a nice addition to any Batman fan's collection. It's a very faithful representation of the vehicle in the film. It may also be hard to find before long, so get it while you can.
