CALL FOR PAPERS
Anxiety Disorders Association of America 30 Annual Conference Anxiety Across the Lifespan: Practical Integration of Basic and Clinical Approaches March 4-7, 2010 Baltimore Marriott Waterfront
th
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Two consistent findings have emerged in the past decade: 1) Anxiety disorders are increasingly recognized as conditions that affect people of all ages, with changing age-related manifestations occurring in children, adults, and older adults. 2) Some of the most interesting work integrates findings from basic research or from randomized clinical trials with recommended approaches for treating patients. This Conference seeks presentations that focus on these broad integrative areas that reflect current research and practice. Submissions are invited on any subject relevant to anxiety and anxiety-related disorders. Presenters are encouraged to consider, but not be limited by, the Conference theme. Presentations may address the needs of specific populations such as children, older adults, women, veterans, or other specific populations. The Annual Conference will seek presentations about research conducted in a variety of settings, from basic laboratory to clinical studies, from research-based settings to those in real-world patients suffering from a range of disorders associated with fear and anxiety. We encourage submissions that teach techniques that clinicians can apply in their practices, including novel approaches and specific case examples. We hope to see basic research on core features of anxiety, developmental psychopathology, results from efficacy studies that provide clear recommendations for evidence-based practice, as well as results for novel treatments or standard treatments delivered in novel settings that generate hypotheses to be tested in coming years through evidence-based efficacy studies. The 30th Annual Conference embraces a fundamental goal of ADAA to advance science and treatment and facilitate integration of different disciplines in research and clinical care. Daniel S. Pine, MD National Institute of Mental Health Conference Chair

Presenters are encouraged to consider the theme of the Conference. Individuals may submit abstracts on a wide range of topics, including panic disorder, agoraphobia, OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and comorbid illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, borderline personality disorder, ADD/ADHD, heart disease, sleep disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and other conditions. Presentations addressing the needs of specific populations such as children, older adults, and women are encouraged. All presenters must register for the Conference. Oral presentations may range from 30 to 60 minutes. Submissions must include the following: An abstract (up to 3,000 characters, or approximately 250 words). Three educational objectives that state what you expect attendees to learn as a result of the session. 2. Symposia / Deadline: September 1, 2009 Symposia, or group presentations, include up to four presenters, a chair/moderator, and possibly a discussant. These sessions focus on a specific topic or theme, such as PTSD in Women, Treating Children with Social Anxiety and Depression, or Anxiety Disorders and Heart Disease. Presenters are invited to be creative and consider setting up symposia as a debate or roundtable discussion in addition to a traditional seminar format. Symposia may be 90 minutes or two hours. Submissions must include the following: An overall program abstract (up to 3,000 characters, or approximately 250 words) that describes the need for the program, topic relevance, and goal. The abstract should not include a listing of each presenter and the title of his or her talk. An abstract (up to 3,000 characters, or approximately 250 words) for each individual presentation. Inclusion of a diversity of speakers is encouraged (different universities, treatment approaches, or settings). Three educational objectives that state what you expect attendees to learn as a result of the session. Objectives are required for the overall program and each presentation. If you are proposing to use videos, films, or other media, please include that information. Responsibilities of chair/moderator: In submitting a symposium or group presentation for review, the chair/moderator agrees to make sure the submission includes an overall abstract, educational objectives, an abstract for each presentation, and complete contact information for each speaker. The chair/moderator is responsible for completing AV forms, returning all disclosure and conflict of interest forms by the deadline, and making session speakers aware of ADAA’s policy that all presenters must register for the Conference if the symposium is accepted. 3. Workshops / Deadline: September 1, 2009 Submissions are invited for advanced-level workshops, targeting clinicians with experience treating anxiety and comorbid disorders. These are highly interactive, lively, and informative sessions with substantial opportunity for discussion. These sessions are not lectures. Each workshop provides hands-on, in-depth clinical training on the treatment of specific anxiety and related disorders.

Workshops may be up to two hours. Submissions must include the following: An abstract (up to 3,000 characters, or approximately 250 words). Three clear and measurable educational objectives that state what you expect attendees to do as a result of the session. Level of program (introductory, advanced, experienced). Please note that the majority of attendees to the Conference are not new to the field. Detailed outline that clearly explains what attendees can expect to walk away with at the end of the session must also be submitted for review. If you are proposing to use videos, films, or other media, please include that information. All workshop speakers must register for the Conference. 4. New Research Posters / Deadline: November 2, 2009 Poster presentations allow participants to share recent findings from ongoing research. While these submissions may represent final reports or may include preliminary reports from ongoing data collection, ADAA requires that all research poster submissions include statements based on appropriate statistical analysis. Posters should not be of a commercial or promotional nature. Abstracts without analyzed data will not be accepted. Presenting authors must attend and remain with the poster for the entire session to discuss their work. ADAA provides a 4' x 8' (landscape) board on which to display posters. Audiovisual equipment is not allowed. Junior-level professionals and students are encouraged to submit abstracts. All poster presenters must register for the Conference. 5. Case Poster Presentations / Deadline: November 2, 2009 Clinicians can present a single case as a poster during the Poster Session. Presenters should expect attendees to view the poster, discuss the case, and be present during the entire session. ADAA provides a 4' x 8' (landscape) board on which to display posters. Audiovisual equipment is not allowed. All case poster presenters must register for the Conference.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND STATEMENT OF NEED
The Annual Conference of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America is designed to meet the educational needs of members and nonmember clinicians and researchers. Current data suggests that in any given year more than 40 million adults in the U.S. suffer from an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are the most commonly diagnosed disorders in children. ADAA members are among the leading experts in the field of anxiety disorders. Many researchers identify the underlying mechanisms for these disorders and developing new treatment strategies as well as conduct research on effectiveness. The desired results for the meeting are that attendees learn the latest developments in

preclinical and clinical research, translate this knowledge to clinicians, and develop new skills and techniques to improve diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of anxiety disorders.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience includes members of ADAA and other professionals committed to the diagnosis, treatment, and cure of anxiety and related disorders. The audience includes physicians, psychologists, social workers, therapists, counselors, nurses, clinical researchers, and basic neuroscientists from the U.S. and other countries. We anticipate that about 700 professionals focused on anxiety and anxietyrelated disorders will attend.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After participating in the 2010 ADAA Annual Conference, attendees should be able to: Recognize recent advances in diagnosis and treatments for anxiety disorders and other comorbid disorders and consider application to their practices. Understand research advances that affect the development of new treatments and may modify current treatment practices. Realize the importance of early intervention in successful treatment, as well as the impact of development on anxiety disorders.
