Chicago is set on a north/south and east/west grid. The location of 0/0 is the intersection of State and
Madison Streets, in the heart of the Loop. Each city block is given an increment of 100. The law school is
located at approximately 800 North and is one block east of State Street on 25 E. Pearson Street. A map
of the downtown area may help you to better conceptualize this grid system.

Here are links to a few interactive maps of Downtown Chicago:

                                 Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) carries over 1.6 million customers a day throughout Chicago and
40 suburbs. Several daily bus routes and a 24-hour railway system enable students to travel to any area of
the city. Loyola University Chicago offers students U-Passes that provide unlimited access to CTA
buses and trains. Regular bus fares are $2.00 if you have a CTA card, or $2.25 if paying by cash. Train
fares are $2.25 and you cannot pay with cash. CTA cards can be reloaded at rail stations. The U-Pass
service will greatly reduce your total cost.
The School of Law is within walking distance from a number of bus routes that stop along Michigan
Avenue, State Street and Clark Street (Bus lines 145, 146, 147, 151, 36, 22). There are also many bus
routes that run east and west along many of the major streets (Bus lines 66, 70, 74, 77). Additionally, the
school is located one block north of the “Chicago” Avenue stop on the Red Line train (“El”), and 8 blocks
east of the “Chicago” Avenue stop on the Brown and Purple Line trains. For specific route planning
information, please visit or call the CTA at 312.836.7000.
For up-to-the-minute bus arrival information, check out the CTA Bus Tracker at .

                                 Metropolitan Rail Service (Metra)
“Metra” offers commuter rail service throughout Chicagoland, giving passengers comfortable cars that
serve three downtown stations and with routes throughout the greater Chicago and suburban areas. The
cost to ride Metra varies based upon the distance of your travel on each route. You may purchase tickets
at several of the major stations, onboard the trains, by mail or online.

There are three downtown stations in Chicago that service the Metra Lines in the city: Union Station at
Canal Street between Adams & Jackson, 312.322.4269; Olgilvie Transportation Center at Madison &
Canal Streets, 312.496.4777; and Millennium Station at 151 East Randolph Street, 312.782.0676. Please
check individual train schedules for additional station information.

CTA transportation is convenient to all three stations, so students who live in the suburbs are still able to
take advantage of the U-PASS. For further information regarding which Metra lines serve your suburb,
contact passenger service information, weekdays by calling 312.322.6777, evenings and weekends at
312.836.4949 or go to

                                          Loyola’s Shuttle Bus
Loyola University has its own transportation shuttle bus service, which is free for Loyola students. The
shuttle bus travels several times each day (about every 20 minutes) between the Lake Shore and Water
Tower campuses during the academic sessions. There is no shuttle service on Saturday or Sunday.
Current schedules are posted online at . There is one shuttle
that travels to Metra Stations from the Water Tower Campus at 9:05 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Loyola University Chicago's Water Tower Campus does not offer parking accommodations for its
students. However, several commercial parking facilities in the area offer discounted rates to Loyola
students. Tickets must be validated at the Corboy Law Center information desk, located in the lobby of
the building. The following link contains rates at the time of
publication, however please contact the garages listed to verify current rules and rates. Also, there are a
limited number of metered parking spaces surrounding the law school.

                                         Car Sharing Programs
On occasion, our students have found it beneficial to have access to a car. Car sharing programs provide
an alternative to owning or renting a vehicle.

I-GO Car Sharing:

                                     What our students are saying:

“The "Not for Tourists" (NFT) Guide to Chicago is great. The maps list gyms, grocery stores, coffee
shops, pizza places, public transportation - all very helpful!”

“Rand McNally’s ‘Easy to Fold’ Map of Chicago North & Downtown Streets is a great help adjusting to
your first few months in Chicago. It is easy to carry and read. It also shows train lines and stops
throughout the city”

“Parking is usually extra, and usually pretty expensive, so make sure to ask about this when looking at
individual apartments. The public transportation system is very good in Chicago and will take you pretty
much anywhere you need to go. If you can avoid bringing a car, then don't.”

“Sell your car! A car is not needed in Chicago. In fact, it is expensive and can be a hassle. Street parking
(can be) difficult in most neighborhoods and garages are costly.”

“(Car sharing programs) are good alternatives if you take public transportation, but need a car sometimes
such as going to IKEA or Target, etc.”

“For those people that like to drive or for that extended trip to the suburbs, consider joining ZipCar. This
company has cars available for people to rent by the hour, day or weekend. The rates are really affordable
and it makes using the car in the city pretty easy. The ZipCars are housed all around the city, so there is
never a problem finding one to rent.”

“The more affordable areas (to live in the city) include moving farther north and/or west. All of these
areas have great restaurants, nightlife and gyms. It is just a question of how far you want to be from the

Chicago has many banks and lending institutions, and you should shop around to find one you feel
comfortable with. Some things to consider are:
1. Location: Some choose to bank near the school, others choose near home.
2. Accounts: Does the bank offer free banking or student accounts?
3. ATM: Are there a number conveniently located to you?

Some of the banks with multiple locations are listed below:
Bank of America
Chase Bank
Corus Bank
Harris Bank
North Community Bank
Northern Trust
TCF Bank

Many of our students utilize health clubs around the city to help keep in shape and de-stress. There are a
number of clubs located all over the city.
There is a facility located at Loyola University’s Lake Shore Campus. More information about the
facility’s hours, location and membership fees can be found at
Below are some of the clubs with multiple facilities in the city. You may want to ask if they have any
specials and/or student rates. There are a number of neighborhood clubs that may be within walking
distance of where you choose to live or the law school.

                                     What our students are saying:
“The YMCA has a gym up in Lakeview that has a sliding scale payment plan for people who are low
income/students. Depending on one's income it can be as low as $14 a month. And the equipment is

“For incoming students looking for a health club, I recommend Crunch. I shopped around last fall, and
they had a decent price and the gyms are outstanding!”

“My friends and I joined Bally's as a "family," so we split the gym membership by 5 people to get the
price to a really inexpensive level. It's the best gym deal I've heard of in the city!”

Many of our students use bookstores online and throughout the city of Chicago. Two bookstores that are
located near the law school are:

    1. Loyola University Bookstore – Water Tower Campus – located across the street from the law
       school in Baumhart Residence Hall,

    2. Beck’s Bookstore – Located at 50 E. Chicago,

Neighborhoods throughout the city will offer day care and pre-school facilities. A couple that we can
suggest are:

Loyola University Chicago--Lake Shore Campus

center is open from 7:30am until 6:00pm. For more information, call 312.508.3444.
