Work-related, competence-based qualifications NVQs have become an increasingly popular qualification which candidates earn through assessment in the workplace. They are competence-based awards, made up of a number of units. They reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do the job effectively and show that a candidate is competent in the area of work represented by the NVQ. NVQs are awarded following training and assessment, usually in the work place, and assessment is normally through on-the-job observation and questioning.
