Reserves are to be entered in the same way as the entries. The closing date for entering reserves is the same as

competing in the competition will be able to be used as substitutes. Please note that there is no charge for submitting

NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.

COMPETITION NUMBERS:
This year we will not be allocating institutional competition numbers. Each athlete will be given an individual number that
they will keep for the duration of the event and wear for all the events they compete in. Relay teams will be allocated a
separate identifier. These will all be given to team captains in their Captains’ Packs on arrival at the event.

AWARDS:
Medals will be awarded to the first three athletes in each event. Results will count towards an institution’s total athletics
team championship points. Athletics team championship points will be awarded to the top eight finishers.

be circulated with the Pre-Event Information on 3 March 2009.

ROUTE JUDGES:
Each Institution entering the competition must nominate two Route Judges. All nominated Route Judges
will be required for the full day’s competition

The 2010 competition will be conducted under standard BBC rules as in previous years.
    1. There will still be two areas of wall which will each offer 5 x 4C and 4 x 5A problems and two areas
of wall which will each offer 4 x 5B and 4 x 5C problems. One half of the entries by university will
climb in Zone A, the other half will climb in Zone B. There will still be only one area offering 4 x 6A
       and 4 x 6B/C problems.
    2. One half of the entries by University will be asked to compete in the morning session – 8.30am to
1.00pm, the other half will be asked to compete in the afternoon session – 1.30pm to 5.30pm
approximately. Whilst Universities will be requested to provide a preferred time slot at the entry
stage, BUCS cannot unfortunately guarantee this. The split will be made on logical/discretionary
grounds once all the entries have been received. Competition times will then be confirmed in the
Pre Event Information on 2 March 2010.

MARKING:
All routes will be clearly marked on the climbing areas with colour-coded holds and a descriptive route card.

8 MEDIUM CLIMBS 4 X 5B, 4 X 5C

SCORING:
SUCCESSFUL FIRST ATTEMPT 10 POINTS
SUCCESSFUL SECOND ATTEMPT 7 POINTS
SUCCESSFUL THIRD ATTEMPT 4 POINTS

BONUS POINTS:
On all problems, a bonus point may be gained by reaching a certain marked hold in the event of three failed
attempts. These extra points are then added to the final points score.

ROUTE JUDGES:
It is a statutory requirement that each institution nominate two route judges per team all of whom will be
expected to act as impartial judges throughout the day and who should liaise with the Chief Judge at all
times. All route judges must make themselves know to the organisers on arrival.
COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS:
All entrants must fulfil BUCS Eligibility criteria (Section 7 of the BUCS Handbook). All competitors MUST
produce a VALID UNIVERSITY ID CARD when registering.

All competitors will have been nominated and team composition determined in advance. There will be no
additional entries on the day but substitutions will be allowed for injury or sickness provided they are taken
from the nominated list of reserves.

Each competitor will be responsible for his/her own scorecard. This card will display and record the route
number, attempt number and score for each route. The score card will be handed in to the route judge prior
to each attempt.

During the competition each competitor will then have three attempts to complete the 25 routes. These
attempts do not need to be consecutive.

Each competitor is responsible for being present and prepared at the start of the competition, no extensions
will be allowed.

Competitors must climb the routes using only the designated holds and friction smears. The use of any
other hold or feature terminates the attempt.

Once the competitor’s body has completely left the floor he/she is deemed to have started that attempt.
Touching the floor again before reaching the finishing hold terminates the attempt.

Competitors must reach and hold the designated finishing hold in control and remain there until the route
judge confirms a successful ascent. Dynos to touch or brief touches of the finishing hold terminates the
attempt.

Competitors may ascend the wall beside the route in order to inspect or clean the designated holds.
Competitors may not touch any marked holds at any time.

At the end of the allocated time, any competitor who is engaged in an attempt and whose body is
completely off the ground may finish that attempt.

Problems or questions should be addressed to the Chief Judge via the Route Judge. At the end of the
competition all competitors must check their score cards and hand them in to the administration desk.

The male and female individual winners will be those with the highest score. The mixed team championship
will be awarded to the university with the highest aggregate score.

In the event of a tie on points, the organisers will determine the winners by the following:
 Number first attempts completed successfully
      Number of routes completed
      Number of routes attempted
      Number of failed attempts
      Super Final Climb-off

The super final will take place in accordance with the UIAA-ICC regulations governing international climbing
competitions

IN ALL CASES THE JUDGES’ DECISION WILL BE FINAL

REFEREEING:
All categories will be run according to WKF (World Karate Federation) rules. All referees WILL be WKF
qualified.

The weigh-in for the Kumite will begin after the Finals of the Kata at approximately 1500 on Saturday 13
March. As well as 08.45 on Sunday 14 March. If you do not make the weight you have entered then you will
not be allowed to change weights and compete. We would recommend that all competitors weigh-in on the
Saturday where possible.

KUMITE:
Novice Kumite rounds will be 1½ minutes long. Senior matches as per WKF rules will be 3 minutes for
men’s matches and 2 minutes for women’s (with a minute added to all finalists’ matches). Although we do
reserve the right to alter these timings of matches across the event.

The following equipment is compulsory and will not be provided by BUCS:
                             Gum Shields
 WKF approved red and blue mitts
 WKF approved red and blue foot and shin pads
                             Ladies chest protectors
                               Groin guards are strongly recommended.
Competitors must provide their own equipment.

RULES AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The rules of the WKF (World Karate Federation) will be followed for this Karate Championship as these are
the rules that are now accepted by the IOC, and are used at World University level.

KATA:

7th to 4th kyu
Pinan/Heian kata only. Competitors will be expected to know a minimum of two kata, but will not be allowed
to repeat a kata consecutively (including the final). They may alternate between any of the five pinan/heian
kata as they wish or between the minimum two.

3rd to 1st kyu (brown belt kata)
Only the following kata may be performed. Competitors may repeat any kata only once but not
consecutively. The number of kata a finalist will need will depend on the entry, but a minimum three kata
should be sufficient. If the entry is unusually large we will review the situation prior to the event. For the
finals (including bronze medal final), a competitor may perform any kata they wish, as long as it is on the
official kata list.
                           Bassai dai (Passai)
                           Saifa
                           Seienchin (Seiyunchin)
                           Juroku (Seiru)

 Gekiai dai Ichi or Ni
                           Heian or Pinan kata’s
Blackbelt Kata
We will be using the full rules of the WKF. Therefore in the first two rounds competitors must select from the
eight official shitei katas (seienchin, bassai dai, saifa, seipai, seishan, chinto, kanku dai, jion) listed and
perform them as prescribed by the WKF. Association and style variations are not allowed and will result in
disqualification.

Please note that there is no longer any such thing as a preliminary round. Therefore if you have a
competitor who has a bye in the first round, then that competitor will only need to perform one shitei kata

Repeating of a kata, once performed, is NOT allowed at any point, including the final and the repechage. If
a competitor repeats any kata they will be disqualified.

N.B. For those who are new to the competition or who are not familiar with WKF rules please note that shitei
kata must be performed as prescribed by the WKF, and the kata must be in the kihon (basics) of the style
they represent.

TEAM KATA:
This year in a bid to rejuvenate the Team Kata competition, teams can do any kata they wish (as long as it
is on the WKF list but also including the pinan/heian kata), teams may also utilise their style or association
variations this year. Teams are required to do a minimum of two kata, but they must not do any kata
consecutively, and the kata for any medal position must be different to the kata they performed in the
previous round.

All medal finals for the team kata (including bronze finals) will require bunkai to be performed. Teams will
be given a maximum of 5 minutes for the bunkai, the time beginning from the final bow of the kata
performance. The bunkai is judged as part of the decision making process.

Should a team make a final and have not prepared bunkai, they will be disqualified and may be given
shikkaku (barred from the tournament). They will not receive any medal or placing.

N.B. For those who are new to the competition or who are not familiar with WKF rules please note that shitei
kata must be performed as prescribed by the WKF, and the kata must be in the kihon (basics) of the style
they represent.

KUMITE:
As is now the norm full WKF rules will apply. Competitors will be required to wear red (aka) or Blue (ao)
belts, and the corresponding coloured mitts, according to their side of the draw. White mitts will NOT be
allowed.

EQUIPMENT:
COMPETITORS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT. NO BELTS OR MITTS WILL BE
AVAILABLE AROUND THE MATS ON THE DAY. Gum shields, foot and shin pads and ladies chest
protectors are compulsory. Groin guards are advised. In addition, competitors (and coaches) MUST only
wear insignia of their institutions (Universities) on all clothing including the Gi - as per regulation KAR 2.1.

TIME:
Male individual bouts will be 3 minutes, Women and junior grade 2 minutes (though we reserve the right to
review this on the day should time become an issue)

COACHES:
It is the responsibility of the coaches and captains to ensure their competitors know the rules. The small
number of disputes we had last year was largely because competitors did not know the rules. In addition,
coaches (and competitors) MUST only wear insignia of their institutions (Universities). Coaches will not be
allowed on the mat areas or at any official meeting wearing clothing of any description with association or
style references.

LICENSES:
This is a karate event. All competitors must have a valid karate licence issued by a British Association
and be graded in the discipline. Further, to ensure fair play, all quarter finalists will have their licences
checked as well as their university ID (NUS cards are not acceptable). This year, there will be no leniency
with regards to incorrect/incomplete/out-of-date licences. If any competitor has an incorrect licence they
WILL be disqualified immediately. It is the competitors’ responsibility to ensure that their licence is up-to
date and properly completed – PLEASE CHECK THIS BEFORE YOU ARRIVE AT THE EVENT.

CLOSING DATE:
Online Entry Forms will automatically close at midnight on 11 February 2010. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL

AWARDS:
Medals will be awarded to the first four students in each individual event and the first tour teams in the
Team Championship, Trophy and Shield. BUCS Points will be awarded to the top four places in individual
events and top eight places in the afore-mentioned team events.

FORMAT:
TEAM EVENTS
Championship/Trophy Qualifying (“Main Draw”): 20 Teams
Team Shield: no limit, although play-offs may be required if an unmanageable number of teams enter this
event.
Team Plate: for teams that are eliminated after the first round in each event.

The “Main Draw” consists of four groups of five teams, drawn randomly in batches of four according to
current ranking position. The best two first teams in each group will qualify for the Championship quarter-
finals and the next two teams that don’t qualify for the Championship will enter the Trophy quarter-finals.
The bottom team in each group will be eliminated and relegated to the Shield for 2010-11.

The Shield will comprise as many groups as are needed to reduce its number to eight for the quarter-finals.
Teams reaching the Shield semi-finals will be promoted to Championship/Trophy level for 2010-11 and will
enter the Trophy via a special elimination quarter-final against teams finishing fourth in the Main Draw
groups. Losers in that round will enter the Shield semi-finals.

All group matches consist of ten frames (five "rubbers" of two frames), so that all five players must
participate, and at least 6 frames are needed to win a match. A team winning a match is awarded 2 points; a
draw results in 1 point each.

In the knock-out stages, a 5-5 tie is resolved by a single-frame play-off. In the final, however, each player
plays their opposite number over the best of three frames. The final is thus won by winning three of the
matches played.

Teams failing to reach the second round of any event are eligible to enter the Team Plate. This is an open-
draw knock-out event, with one frame per player until the final where each player plays two frames and six
are needed for a team win. A perpetual cup and medals will be awarded to winners.

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS:
(a) Individual Championship: First Team players only
(b) Individual Trophy: Second/Third Team players only
Both events are knock-out competitions. While it is not compulsory to enter these events, players are
encouraged to do so. Names of players must be supplied on the official entry form, so that the draw for both
the Individual and Team events can be made in advance.

As the Individual Championship may be limited in size, entry cannot be guaranteed to all students from any
institution. Therefore players’ names must be listed on the entry form in order of preference. The Individual
Championship is the best of three frames until the semi-final and final, which are the best of five frames.
Either eight or sixteen players, to be decided by the Snooker SMG, may be seeded for the Individual
Championship.

In the Individual Trophy, all matches are the best of three frames.

TIMETABLE:
The final timetable will be drawn up once entries have been received. This will be circulated with the Pre
Event Information, prior to the Championships.

PRE-EVENT INFORMATION:
Pre-event Information will be sent to Athletic Unions/Sports Offices via the BUCS Essentials on Tuesday 2
March 2010. It will also be posted on the Snooker pages at www.bucs.org.uk. It is your responsibility to
check that the names entered in the event are correct and notify BUCS of any errors. This information will

Road or rail

Sheffield is in the centre of Britain, almost equidistant between the east and west coasts, and between
London in the south and Edinburgh in the north.

North-south

The main north-south road link, the M1 runs past Sheffield on its route from London to Leeds, and east of
Sheffield also links with the M18 which runs from the M1 to Hull and the Humber ports. Both these roads are
just a 15 minute journey from Sheffield city centre. If you are travelling from the north, the A1(M) runs all the
way from Edinburgh, via Newcastle.

Direct trains run hourly from London, with a quickest journey time of just two hours, and an average journey
time of two and a quarter hours. The East Coast Main Line runs through Doncaster offering a journey time
from London of under two hours.

                                           BACK TO CONTENTS

An accreditation system will be in place at this year’s BUCS Championships. Accreditation will be used to
ensure that only competitors and specific team staff have access to competition areas within a venue. For
many sports, competitors will also need to produce certain sports specific documentation to obtain
accreditation – please check the sport information for more details. Once an individual has received a pass
it must be worn at all times. There will be two main Accreditation Hubs serving groups of sports and as well
as individual accreditation at other venues. A list of the sports and their respective Hub is detailed below.

Competitors will also be able to collect an exclusive Nike competitor t-shirt at the Accreditation Hubs as well
as an event programme containing offers and discounts from our partners.

The process for Accreditation at The BUCS Championships will be as follows:

Competitors:

Team Sports
It is the responsibility of the Captain/Team Manager to report to Accreditation upon arrival to accredit their
team.

Individual Sports
In individual sports competitors can accredit separately however if a team arrives together it would be
recommended that one representative can accredit on behalf of all the institution’s members.

Coaches & Team Staff:

Team Sports
Each team will have three passes automatically allocated for support staff (coach, manager, physio etc).
Should teams require more than three passes they will have the opportunity to request extra ones when
submitting team sheets.

Individual Sports
Coaches will be asked to obtain accreditation in advance. Further details will follow. There will be some
provision for coaches to accredit on the day but this will be at the discretion of the accreditation staff and
numbers will be limited per institution if demand is high. In order for coaches to accredit on the day they will
need to come to the accreditation desk with their athlete to complete the necessary paperwork that will be
available on the day.

IF ANY MEMBER OF A TEAM OR INDIVIDUAL SPORT DOES NOT PROVIDE THE RELEVANT
DOCUMENTATION THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE AND WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO ENTER
THE VENUES AS A SPECTATOR. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS MADE TO THIS RULE.

On successfully accreditation, each competitor and team support staff member will receive an accreditation
pass which must be worn at all times. A BUCS Championships t-shirt will also be supplied (Individual athlete
coaches will NOT receive a t-shirt). Accreditation will generally allow competitors and team staff to access
changing rooms, the competition areas, warm up areas, and medical areas.

Accreditation will also allow competitors and team staff to enter all other venues free of charge in order to
spectate in designated areas.

Please bear in mind that whilst every endeavour will be made to make accreditation a quick process, at key
times it could be busy and therefore may take some time. It is advised that teams and individuals should
allow adequate time to ensure all relevant people can pass through Accreditation in time for their
matches/events. There will be no opportunity to circumvent this accreditation procedure.

Lost Passes:
If an athlete or support staff loses his/her accreditation pass there will be a £5.00 charge for a replacement
pass.

                         NO ACCREDITATION, NO COMPETITION.

At Nike, serving the athlete has always been at the forefront of everything we do. Be it through providing
innovative, technical products or supporting development and raising their profile, we strive to make a
positive impact and enhance their game – whatever it might be. Our co-founder Bill Bowerman famously
said, “If you have a body – you are an athlete” and we apply this philosophy at every possible instance. We
therefore recognise the significance of participation in sport at all levels, from grassroots right through to the
pinnacle of international competition, and the universities with BUCS in particular, play a fundamental part in
nurturing this performance and development. We are sure that a consistent level of support in this system
will contribute to great success in the 2012 London Olympics. An example of our commitment can be seen
in our campaign to scour the UK and Ireland’s top universities to find ambitious and inspirational young
women who are passionate about sport and live their lives with the strength and confidence it gives them.
The chosen few will become part of our Nike Selects team – working with Nike to embody the spirit of
Nikewomen on campus and share their love for sport with the wider world.
