HIV Services

The HIV program provides both medical as well as support services. It is run out of both Neponset Health
Center and Geiger Gibson Community Health center. Between these centers, the following services
are provided to HIV patients: Primary Care, Dental Care, Infectious Disease Specialist, Eye Care,
Pharmacy Services, Substance Abuse Counseling, Behavioral Health Services, Suboxone Treatment,
Transportation Assistance, HIV and STD Counseling and Testing, Interpretation Services, and Nutrition
Counseling. A food pantry is on site and available every Tuesday and food vouchers are offered to clients.
In addition each patient is assigned a service coordinator. The service coordinator will assist the patient
with signing up for medical appointments, providing referrals, public benefit counseling and enrollment,
housing assistance as well as transportation assistance.

GET CHECKED OUT

The purpose of this campaign is to get youth as well as adults tested for all STDs. Youth clinic hours are
offered to make STD testing more accessible for young individuals ages 15-24. This clinic will allow youth
to come in and get tested for all STDs. Upon completion of getting tested and coming in for a follow-up
visit they will receive a $20 stipend. In addition, free, anonymous HIV counseling and testing is offered at
both Geiger Gibson Community Health Center and Neponset Health Center.

Peer Leadership Program

Program participants are youth and young adults between the ages of 16 and 25 with ties to the Dorchester
community who are committed to reducing communicable diseases, violence and substance abuse rates
and improving the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS and individuals in recovery. Peer Leader
activities include mobile outreach, prevention education programs and events promoted by the Community
Programs Department. Peer Leaders also offer support services to individuals living with HIV/AIDS and in
recovery by facilitating workshops, support groups and access to health care and social services.
Life Skills Program

The Community Programs Department is working to prepare teens to find employment by giving them
the necessary job skills through the Life Skills Program. The Six Week Life Skills Program is aimed at
Dorchester youths ages15-18. The program will provide valuable information in areas such as healthy
relationships, good decision-making, and job readiness. This program will also divert teens from the
streets and possible violence. Upon completion of the Life Skills Program, teens between the ages of 16-
18 can qualify to work as Peer Leaders on Community Program projects.

Prevention Crew

A youth facilitated program intended to increase awareness around HIV, STDs and Hepatitis B & C.
Trained youth (individuals between the ages of 15-24) engage in conducting outreach to their peers to
encourage them to get tested for HIV and STDs. During outreach, self- care kits are distributed that
includes educational materials and safe-sex supplies. There are also two educational components to
the project. These include group level intervention classes that are based on CDC approved curriculum.
There are two types of group interventions – an intensive 6 week class called Take CHARGE and a less
involved and more frequently offered class called And What NOW? The classes will be held in community
based settings and/or youth centers.

Dorchester Substance Abuse Coalition (DSAC)

A grassroots organization dedicated to reducing, preventing, and eliminating substance use and abuse
among youth in our community. We bring members of the community together to address the risk
factors leading to substance use and abuse, and educate parents and loved ones about prevention and
treatment. Our members include youth, parents, organizations and individuals from all sectors of the
community, including the Mayor’s office, the police department, the Boston Public Health Commission
and local schools.

If you are interested in sharing your suggestions of how to reduce substance abuse among our youth, or
just want to know how to get involved, you can feel free to join us at: DSAC’s Quarterly Meeting - The Third
Tuesday of March, June, September, and December, 6:00pm-7:00pm. We are located at Caritas Carney
Hospital, 2100 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, MA 02124.
