deal of support from our Beth Sholom community. I know that I will be working with a
wonderful group of officers: Howard Lazar, First Vice President; Alex Wulwick; Second
Vice President; Adam Wall, Third Vice President; Glenn Shepard, Treasurer; Matthew Agin,
Financial Secretary; Penina Grossberg, Recording Secretary; and Rhoda Goldstein,
Corresponding Secretary. In addition, I will be helped by the Board of Trustees and our
current committee chairpersons.
But the officers, the Board of Trustees and the committee chairs cannot do the work of the
synagogue alone. So I am counting on all of you – those I know well from my 13 years as
part of the Beth Sholom community, as well as those I have yet to meet – to become active
members of the “team.” Is there a committee you want to join? We welcome you with open
arms. Do you have an idea for a fundraiser, a new event or an on-going program? Tell us
about it. Please contact me at president@cbsteaneck.org to share your thoughts, your
suggestions and your concerns.
I look forward to working with all of you and to getting to know you better. As another
new president said recently, “Yes we can.”
B’shalom,
Karen Misler

Seudah Shelishit on June 6 is to why I find our annual Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration to be such a wonderful occasion. We
sponsored by Leah and Aryeh Meir often say that our Shabbaton exemplifies the best of what we are, and it does. But I think
to commemorate the yahrzeit of Abe that the way in which we celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut is also very telling and that it, too,

amazement that we knew so many of the songs.
And we conclude, as usual, with food, for how can you celebrate Israel without enjoying
the Middle Eastern foods that are so connected with our own experiences living in or
visiting Israel?
We have never featured a keynote speaker; we do not invite nor do we announce the
presence of dignitaries. And we do not allow our celebration to become politicized.
Everyone, whether on the right or the left, can celebrate Israel with us.
That is what Yom Ha’atzmaut is like at Beth Sholom. It is simple and unpretentious; it is both
meaningful and joyous. It is the coming together of a community to mark another year of
Israel’s independence in a manner that is both spiritual and celebratory. The way in which
we celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut reflects both who we are and the strong connection that we
have as individuals and as a community to the land, the people and the State of Israel.

As we teach our children about Israel and the connection of the Jewish people to Eretz
Yisrael, it is our intention and our hope to make that connection a personal one, a connection
that comes not just from school, but from home as well.
As part of our Yom Ha’atzmaut curriculum, we asked the students to talk with their parents
about their family’s feelings for and connections to the land of Israel. Their homework
assignment was to bring in an artifact, along with a brief description, representing part of
that connection.
Sunday morning prior to Yom Ha’atzmaut, we created a mini-museum of our Congregation
Beth Sholom Religious School families’ Israel connection. Having decorated our downstairs
hallway with Israeli flag banners, glossy photos of Israeli leaders, beautiful landscapes and
landmarks, our students came in, eager and excited to share their treasures and carefully
set up their displays in our “museum.”
