Ner shel Shabbat: 8:04 p.m.
                                   Message from the President-Elect
Kabbalat Shabbat: 6:45 p.m.
It’s a time of transition in the Misler-Feigenbaum household. This past year has been filled
Torah Portion: Naso
Minhah: 7:35 p.m. with carpools, voice lessons, college applications and auditions for Stephanie, our youngest
Ma’ariv: 8:55 p.m. child. But, at long last, the college decision has been made and Stephanie will be leaving for
Evanston, Ill. in September. So now that Barry and I are becoming “empty nesters,” how will
June 12-13, 2009 I fill the many hours that have been devoted to child-rearing over the past 20 years? Eddie
Ner shel Shabbat: 8:08 p.m. Zizmor, chair of our Nominating Committee, approached me with a question in March:
Kabbalat Shabbat: 6:45 p.m. “Are you ready to graduate from being a Vice President to becoming President of Beth
Torah Portion: Beha’alotekha Sholom?” Suddenly, with the answer to that question, the hours were filled.
Minhah: 7:40 p.m.
Ma’ariv: 9 p.m. In all seriousness, I am taking on this new position with appreciation of the synagogue’s
confidence in me, a little nervousness at the responsibility involved and a great deal of

Kabbalat Shabbat: 6:45 p.m. one of the flagship synagogues of the Conservative movement. We are blessed with an

Kabbalat Shabbat: 6:45 p.m. One of my goals for my term as president is to make sure that as many of our members

agreed to take on the presidency, many people assured me that I would have a great

deal of support from our Beth Sholom community. I know that I will be working with a
wonderful group of officers: Howard Lazar, First Vice President; Alex Wulwick; Second
Vice President; Adam Wall, Third Vice President; Glenn Shepard, Treasurer; Matthew Agin,
Financial Secretary; Penina Grossberg, Recording Secretary; and Rhoda Goldstein,
Corresponding Secretary. In addition, I will be helped by the Board of Trustees and our
                                   current committee chairpersons.

But the officers, the Board of Trustees and the committee chairs cannot do the work of the
synagogue alone. So I am counting on all of you – those I know well from my 13 years as
part of the Beth Sholom community, as well as those I have yet to meet – to become active
members of the “team.” Is there a committee you want to join? We welcome you with open
arms. Do you have an idea for a fundraiser, a new event or an on-going program? Tell us
about it. Please contact me at president@cbsteaneck.org to share your thoughts, your
                                   suggestions and your concerns.

I look forward to working with all of you and to getting to know you better. As another
new president said recently, “Yes we can.”

                                   B’shalom,

KIDDUSH

Kiddush on June 6 is sponsored From the Rabbi
by the Rosen and Brown families
in honor of Kyle becoming a On April 28, the eve of the fifth of Iyar, many of us gathered together at Beth Sholom to
Bar Mitzvah. celebrate the anniversary of Israel’s 61st year of independence. It was a very special
evening, and even though several weeks have passed, I have been giving a lot of thought
Seudah Shelishit on June 6 is to why I find our annual Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration to be such a wonderful occasion. We
sponsored by Leah and Aryeh Meir often say that our Shabbaton exemplifies the best of what we are, and it does. But I think
to commemorate the yahrzeit of Abe that the way in which we celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut is also very telling and that it, too,
Meyers, father of Aryeh Meir, and Yael exemplifies Beth Sholom at its best. And I do not mean simply that our celebration draws
Hana Meir, daughter of Leah and more than 200 people, year after year. What do I feel is so remarkable about our Yom
Aryen, and by Susan Klarreich in Ha’atzmaut celebration? What sets us apart from so many of the other Yom Ha’atzmaut
memory of her husband, Brian Weiss. celebrations that take place in our own community and elsewhere?

Kiddush on June 13 is sponsored by First, just as is done in Israel, we begin with a very moving Yom Hazikaron commemoration,
Lorraine and Alan Eras in honor of remembering and mourning those who have given their lives for Israel. The ceremony is a
the 5th birthday of their children, simple one, usually consisting of the lighting of a memorial candle, the recitation of El Maleh,
Marc and Mira; by Gloria and Andor and the reading of a poem or two in memory of those who died. While we alternate
Glattstein in honor of their 55th between several different poems, the reading of Natan Alterman’s Magash Hakesef (“The
wedding anniversary; by Ruth and Silver Platter”) never fails to bring a tear to my eye. And then the flame is transferred from
Wally Cowan in honor of Ruth’s the yahrzeit candle to the candles lit in honor of Israel’s independence, and we begin our
special birthday and their 62nd festive ma’ariv service, chanting the prayers with the nusah that we use on our major festivals,
wedding anniversary; and by Frieda and including with the spirited singing of the psalms of Hallel. This beautiful service reflects
Herschman Huberman and Steven our understanding of the religious significance of Yom Ha’atzmaut. We celebrate the
Huberman in honor of their 36th establishment of the State of Israel, not just with entertainment, food and merry-making,
wedding anniversary and in honor but with a ma’ariv service in which we thank God for the miracle of Israel. (The religious
of the marriage of their son, Daniel significance of Yom Ha’atzmaut is also marked at our shaharit service, where we include
Huberman, M.D., to Becky Pearl. not only a special Al Hanissim and Hallel, but a Torah reading with haftarah, as well.)

Kiddush on June 20 is sponsored And then we go into the Shulman Auditorium for our celebration
by Men’s Club in honor of Men’s of Israel. While there has been a performative dimension to
Club Shabbat. many of our Yom Ha’atzmaut programs, they have also sought
to engage us more actively in celebrating Israel. This year we had
Kiddush on June 27 is sponsored the Parparim Dance group, which first performed and then led
by Ariela Noy and Steven Kugelmass all of us in Israeli folk dancing. Programs in past years included
in honor of their daughter, Liat, wonderful community sing-alongs, where we were led in the
becoming a Bat Mitzvah. singing of Israeli songs, old and new, by Shirah BeTzibbur, a
New York-based group that performs primarily with Israeli
groups. Every time they have come, they have expressed
amazement that we knew so many of the songs.

And we conclude, as usual, with food, for how can you celebrate Israel without enjoying
the Middle Eastern foods that are so connected with our own experiences living in or
                                         visiting Israel?

We have never featured a keynote speaker; we do not invite nor do we announce the
presence of dignitaries. And we do not allow our celebration to become politicized.
Everyone, whether on the right or the left, can celebrate Israel with us.

That is what Yom Ha’atzmaut is like at Beth Sholom. It is simple and unpretentious; it is both
meaningful and joyous. It is the coming together of a community to mark another year of
Israel’s independence in a manner that is both spiritual and celebratory. The way in which
we celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut reflects both who we are and the strong connection that we
have as individuals and as a community to the land, the people and the State of Israel.

On any given Shabbat, there are numerous things going on here at Congregation Beth Lymor and Jack Wasserman and their
Sholom. Our Sanctuary Service. Either the Parallel Minyan or Minyan Koleinu gathering for children, Elan and Maya
services. Four children’s services meeting throughout our lower level. A Parsha Ha’Shavuah
discussion. Tzipporei Shalom rehearsal. And all this happens in the span of about four hours Mazel Tov to:
on a Shabbat morning. Barbara David on the engagement

Recently, though, we had the opportunity to add more to the mix. The date happened to be Scheinerman of Columbia, Maryland
May 9; a Bar Mitzvah was scheduled for that morning and all the “normal” Shabbat activity
was ready to go. But in addition to what I noted above, that morning was also the culmination Adyna Rosen and family on her son,
of our Lunch and Leyn program, where fifth graders learn to read Torah as a training step Kyle, becoming a Bar Mitzvah
for practicing for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. And, on top of that, we held our first Teen Minyan.
                                                                                                Ariela Noy and Steven Kugelmass
So there were seven minyanim for various ages and persuasions taking place at the same

The morning was crazy … but I would not have wanted to be anywhere else. Marilyn and Richard Rubin on the
birth of a granddaughter, Abigail Rose,
Congregation Beth Sholom is a unique synagogue. This one Shabbat morning, and others to Lee Rubin and Jamie Labell
just like it that happen throughout the year, is a shining example of the complexity and
diversity of the members we serve and the needs we meet. As this one Shabbat morning All our graduating high school seniors:
proves, we really do have something for everyone and are here to meet the varied needs Stephanie Feigenbaum, Adva Hanan,
that enable everyone to find their home at Congregation Beth Sholom. Most synagogues Samuel Herschenfeld, Jonathan
would be in awe of the challenge to find a place for upwards of seven minyanim on one Huberman, Ziv Nelson, Gideon Popkin,
Shabbat morning. Sarah Prince, Joey Resnick, Adam

As a community, we strive to meet the needs of all our members – as is evidenced by this Silow-Carroll, David Storfer, Alexis
one Shabbat morning. But there is more than Shabbat to our shul, and we are always looking Tannenholtz, Mitchell Tencer, Adam
to connect more members to the various opportunities we offer currently or could offer in Volerich and Arielle Yeshua
the future. If there are ways we can enhance our community to better meet your needs,
please let me know. Yehudis and Jules Gutin and family

After a long, challenging year in school, balancing books with sports, a social life, maybe Debby Leder on her son, Gershie,
even a job, it’s time to enjoy the warm weather and fresh air with a well-deserved summer becoming a Bar Mitzvah

As we teach our children about Israel and the connection of the Jewish people to Eretz
Yisrael, it is our intention and our hope to make that connection a personal one, a connection
that comes not just from school, but from home as well.

As part of our Yom Ha’atzmaut curriculum, we asked the students to talk with their parents
about their family’s feelings for and connections to the land of Israel. Their homework
assignment was to bring in an artifact, along with a brief description, representing part of
                                         that connection.

Sunday morning prior to Yom Ha’atzmaut, we created a mini-museum of our Congregation
Beth Sholom Religious School families’ Israel connection. Having decorated our downstairs
hallway with Israeli flag banners, glossy photos of Israeli leaders, beautiful landscapes and
landmarks, our students came in, eager and excited to share their treasures and carefully
set up their displays in our “museum.”

Rav Todot - many thanks to our parents for working with your children, making this such a
meaningful program.

At our end of year program, on May 31, after leading Tefillah, the students hosted their
parents in “Avraham’s tent.”The children came dressed as a
figure from the Bible or Jewish History, and shared
something they’ve learned from and about their
character. Refreshments were Torah-inspired: Noah’s
Rainbow Ices, Lot’s Wife’s Salty Pretzels, and more,
along with Challot prepared by the children.

Thank you to our teachers – Claire Goldstein, Jessica
Marino, Esther Shayowitz and Shoshana Wagner – and
our teacher’s aides – Lauren Blitz, Joshua Herbert and
Amanda Tendler – for our commitment to our children
and for helping keep Judaism alive through our students.

The May 19 Schmoozeday was our last for this season and featured a photographic travelogue
narrated by Margo Moss showing beautiful pictures of her most recent trip to Honduras.

                                        On Tuesday, June 16, Hazak will enjoy an end-of-the-year picnic from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in
