									            Grandma’s Gingerbread
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour                     1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup white sugar                              2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter                                  2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 egg                                           1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup dark molasses                             1/2 cup apple sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt                              1 cup hot water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9 inch square pan. Cream
together sugar and butter. Beat in egg then mix in molasses. Sift together dry
ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Stir in hot water. Pour into prepared
pan. Bake 45 minutes and test by inserting knife into center of cake. If it comes
out clean, the cake is done. If not, bake up to another 15 minutes (test every 5
