This Kudos Corner comes from North Broward Medical Center to Barbara Bailin, Director of Emergency Financial Assistance. Dear Barbara, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and Jewish Family Service of Broward County for helping our Cancer patients throughout the years. Without your assistance, many of our patients would not have successfully completed their cancer treatment. From the 20 year old young man with brain cancer who is doing well now to the 58 year old woman who lost her 8 year battle, but was able to die comfortably in her own home… JFS was there to help. I would also like to personally thank you, Barbara, for your professionalism and compassion you display every time we come to you for assistance. It is truly a pleasure working with your services and our physicians are well aware of the impact you have on their patients. Please keep up your good work and again thank you. I can’t express how much our patients appreciate your assistance. Sincerely, Linda Watson Oncology Social Worker Broward Health - North Broward Summer 2012 │Pg. 1 │United Way of Broward County│ Summer 2012 │Pg. 2 │Through the eyes of our clients│ “My name is Edna, last year I lost my husband of 57 years. He had Alzheimer’s and towards the end he could no longer do anything for himself.” I have a son. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and two children. Thinking of them makes me smile. I wish I could see them more often. He calls on occasion to ask if I am eating and how the weather is, but I don't always tell him the truth because I don't want to burden him. As the days pass I feel more and more alone. I don’t use the upstairs anymore because of my arthritis. I sleep on the couch most nights and wonder how I will get by for another few years. Now I have to strategize how I will go grocery shopping or see my doctors or pay bills. It was easier when my husband was alive. Now, things stay broken because I don’t know who to call. Sometimes I just can’t make myself leave the house. It’s just too much trouble. The reality is that many seniors don’t take care of themselves. As they become more frail, they don’t get to the supermarket as often and so they don’t eat; they don’t get to the doctor’s for regular follow-ups and they don’t go outside because of the heat. The result is sickness, isolation, depression and loss of cognitive abilities. In many cases, our seniors are left to fend for themselves. They begin to feel like a burden to their family. JFS assists seniors like Edna everyday. But we need your help.
