1. What’s Up?

Hello, All! Newsletters will go out every other week from now until the end of the
semester. If you miss a newsletter, you can find the active newsletter at
http://rtfcage.com/newsletter under “For this week’s Newsletter, click here.”

Don’t forget to send your crew calls to the Cage: cage@austin.utexas.edu

I am also currently inputting more and more information, grants, and festivals into
the website so please check the new Cage website for helpful information:
http://rtfcage.com

Also The Department of Radio-Television-Film is in need of some of your
feedback. If you are a current Undergraduate student or have graduated with
your Bachelors please take the time to do this survey.

I hope everyone’s week is going well.

~Sarah

2. Announcing The Cage’s First time Film Festival Fund

The Cage: The Student Production Resource Center was awarded $500
from the College of Communication CCS Career Program Partnership Fund
in September 2009. This money has been issued so that the Cage may
enact the First Time Film Festival Fund.

First Time Film Festival Fund is a small fund that will be given to ten students
each semester in order to be used on film festival entry fees. Film festival entry
fees can vary from $10-$100. These costs can stack up quickly and become
daunting. Film festival participation is very important for film students because it
helps establish an identity within the community, allows room for networking,
helps create a realistic portrait of the kind of films that are being made and how
the industry reacts to these films, and helps give prestige to the film students, the
Department of Radio-Television-Film, and the College of Communication.
With the First Time Film Festival Fund, the Cage: Student Production Resource
Center hopes to help apprehensive and preoccupied filmmakers get their work
out in the world. The First Time Film Festival Fund is important because film
festival participation is directly related to a filmmaker’s career exploration and
development. If a filmmaker does not get his/her work seen, then there is no way
he/she will ever be successful.

This award is specifically to encourage film festival participation. Ten students
will receive $50 to assist with festival entry fees. Exact funds will vary from
semester to semester.

More information will be available online at www.rtfcage.com next week.

Applications open Tuesday October 20th
Application Deadline November 20th
Awards Announced December 1st
-------------------------------------------------------------------
3. LOCKERS!

I have cut locks. If you are missing your stuff, please come to the Cage to
retrieve your items.

Lockers 140 and D are now in danger of being cut.

It might be helpful if you have some space to call your own:
http://rtfcage.com/lockers - take pride in supporting the Cage!

If you want a locker:
*Pick the locker you want, put a lock on it and IMMEDIATELY:
*E-mail the CAGE (cage@austin.utexas.edu) with Your Name, E-mail, locker
number, and classification (undergrad, grad, staff, faculty, etc.)
*Put the $20 check or $20 cash in an envelope in the CAGE mailbox (CMA
6.118) with again your name, e-mail, and locker number on the envelope.

Lockers cost $20 for the semester, $30 for a year if paid all at once.

There are roughly 41 lockers available for students to use, including locker 36
which is a double-decker locker and the larger ABC lockers closest to Studio 4B:
AMY, BASIL, CLARA, DESMOND, ERNEST, FANNY, HECTOR and IDA are all
available. Lockers are a great way to store hard drives, film reels, tapes, and
backpacks. You’re here all the time as it is, you might as well have someplace
you can safely store your stuff.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
4. New Locker Policy!!! PLEASE READ!
Beginning January 2010 all graduate Teaching Assistants will be required to pay
for their use of lockers. The fee for one locker will be $10 a semester. There will
be no exceptions.

Faculty and Staff will still be compensated one locker.

Also beginning 2010 the Cage will be allowed to bill your locker dues to your
What I Owe page.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Your film festival participation!

Center would like to keep track of all the film festivals that RTF students' films

awarded.

Please send your name, film title, class in which the film was produced, film
festival, and year along with any awards awarded to the Cage at
cage@austin.utexas.edu AND to Stephanie Crouch swcrouch@mail.utexas.edu.

Resource Center. Basically I would like to make a producing team that will assist
undergrad and graduate projects with their producing needs. It would be ideal if
you’ve taken one of the beginning producing classes with either Richard Lewis or
John Pierson but it is not a necessity.

This is a great opportunity to get some producing experience. Unfortunately I
don’t even get paid, so this would be an unpaid job.

days a week. Since we aren’t launching until next semester, you’ll have time to
select a class schedule that won’t spread you too thin. Pay will be $20 per video

30. Seeking Video Editor

Hi, I'm looking for a video editor for a project I'm working on. I recently went to
Mississippi and interviewed people who lived during segregation. I want to edit it
and compile it into a video to support a book my wife has written. The interviews
were done on an inexpensive digital camera with video capability in AVI format,
so they're really low quality. I need to have it edited, cleaned up, etc.

I'd like to hire a student, grad or undergrad, who can help me with this work. I
think it'll take about 10 hours to do some basic stuff. But then I hope they'd be
able to also give me some basic instruction in Adobe Premiere Elements so I can
do a little more stuff myself. Could you recommend a student, grad or undergrad,
who might be interested in some video editing work on the side?

Thanks, Oren Rosenthal, oren@orenrosenthal.com

film and edit, offering any unique perspectives on the cinematography or other
creative input. Meals will be provided.

33. Short Film needs home

Hi everyone. I'm a writer based in south Austin. I have some short films I've
written that I would like to see come to life. These shorts are free for anyone
eager to work on a new project. If you decide to submit these for competition and
end up making money we can talk about percentages then. Overall I don't care.
Like I said, I want to see them come to life. These shorts are 100% original and
range from 5min to 20 min. I don't have time to produce these myself as I am
very busy. Please let me know if you're interested in working on a new project
and ill be happy to send you a synopsis and sample. Thanks.

35. SPEED MENTORING — SATURDAYS, OCTOBER 17, 24, 31 — 10:00am-
1:00pm — at the Picture Box Studio, 701 Tillery, Suite A-7, Austin 78702.

REEL WOMEN has once again come up with something brand-new and oh-so-
exciting! You’ve heard of “speed dating”? Well, this is SPEED MENTORING,
except you’re going to get 15 minutes of one-on-one time with successful
professionals and not get stuck with any “duds”!
We’ll start out with a group introductory session so that you can “meet the
mentors” and hear about their skills, talents and experience; then we’ll let you
pick their brains on the subjects of YOUR choice. We urge you to think of
questions and come prepared to make the most of your time with each mentor.
“Think outside the set or studio”. How can a talent agent help a documentary
producer? Well, you might need a unique or known voice to narrate your
project. How can a film reviewer mentor an aspiring actor? Maybe by pointing
out impressive and winning performances from recent and long-ago films?
That’s just a few ideas to get you started.
In addition to the mentoring, think of what a wonderful opportunity this is to meet
people who are out there actually “doing it” — that is, working in “the biz”. These
contacts can prove invaluable to you in the future, but you’ll have immediate
access to people who can give you advice and answers.

NOTICE: Not all mentors will be at all three sessions, and the schedule is
subject to change, but there will be 10-12 of the announced mentors at
each session.
COST: $20 per week for RW members; $30 for others. All three sessions (paid
in advance) for $50 members, $75 others.Non-members can join and get a $5
discount off the regular $35 membership fee.

RESERVATIONS ARE NECESSARY. If we don’t have enough participants sign
up, then we’ll have to cancel the session.
