Church Buildings and Churchyards – [See Appendices]
All the church buildings are well looked after and receive regular
maintenance. The detailed fabric reports for 2011 are set out as
Appendices. Quinquennials took place for St Mary, Arkengarthdale and
St Mary, Muker in 2011. Churchwardens and congregations are grateful
to all those who help to maintain the fabric of the churches.
Vicarage
In February 2011, new double glazing was installed at The Vicarage in
Reeth
Arkengarthdale Church of England Primary School
Mrs Enid Lundberg continues as a Foundation governor, a term running
from November 2008 for a period of 4 years. The Vicar continues as a
Governor.
The school roll stands at 36 at present. 2 children will leave in the
summer and 5 new children will start in September.
They have a link with a school in Leeds and a link school in Kenya.
Years 5 & 6 visited Lakeside, an outdoor education centre, last year for a
residential visit.
The Vicar has been in school during the year, joining in with activities
and taking assembly. Mrs Lundberg attends assembly and is present in
the school on one day each term. As a governor, she works with children
with special educational needs.
The children have displayed their work in St Mary’s Church and the
church is used within the school curriculum. They also take part in
Christmas, Easter and Harvest services. Members of the congregation
support the school in fund-raising and in working with the children on
specific projects.
There is RE provision and a Christian ethos is maintained in the school.
Reeth Community and Gunnerside Methodist Confederated Primary
School
Mrs Linda Cork started work as the new head teacher in the summer term
of 2009. The Vicar has been more involved in the life of the schools in
the past year, in visiting and joining in with school activities.
In April 2011, the Vicar led a school ‘Royal Wedding’ in the orchard in
Reeth.
The joint schools’ Christingle service took place on the last day of the
Christmas term. The service went well, and was appreciated by those who

came and those who took part. The new sound system at St. Andrew’s,
Grinton, was noted as a good resource for this service.
Review of the Year
Worship
Sunday Services
These were maintained throughout the year, following the usual pattern
for this parish. Services are held in three of our four churches each
Sunday (except for the fifth Sunday) and two of these services are
midmorning celebrations of Parish Eucharist (CW) or Holy Communion
(BCP). The fifth Sunday continues as a United Parish Eucharist, at which
we have invited speakers, and a retiring collection for an outside cause.
Patronal celebrations or Dedication Festivals are held. The Parish Choir
provides music for Festivals, Fifth Sundays and other special events.
There is a mid week celebration of Holy Communion each Wednesday
morning, usually at St. Andrew’s, Grinton. Since April 2008, the service
on the first Wednesday of the month has been held in the lounge at
Quaker Close Sheltered Housing Flats, where it is well attended and much
appreciated. Prayers for Healing are said in this service on the second
Wednesday of each month.
Evensong is held once a month each in Arkengarthdale and Grinton, but
does not take place in the winter months at Arkengarthdale. Lay led
Compline is said once a month each in Arkengarthdale and Muker. Family
Services take place at festivals, in particular in conjunction with the
school in Arkengarthdale.
There are very few families with children in Muker to support a Family
Service at present so in 2010 the evening service was changed from a
Family Service to an informal Evening Prayer with hymns. The situation is
kept under review, and the arrangement is flexible enough so that a
suitable service for families could be introduced again.
Special Services
A number of special services took place in the parish during the year.
These included:
Worship during and at the end of the Good Friday Walk
The British Legion Remembrance Service
Crib Services at Muker and Arkengarthdale
Mothering Sunday Services
The Joint Schools’ Christingle Service
In November 2009 and 201, a parish All Souls Service was held, to
remember those who had died recently or longer ago. It is open to all,
and those who have been bereaved during the past year receive a written

invitation, and it is advertised. The service has not been well attended,
and so was not held in 2011. Thought will be given to a different
approach in the future.
Back to Church Sunday
This was again marked together by all the churches across the two dales,
through the Swaledale Christian Council.
5th Sunday Services
In 2011, the speakers and events were as follows:
2011
30 January Grinton Revd Alan Coustick,
Methodist
Superintendent
29 May Low Row Revd Andrew Pearson
(Busoga Trust)
Festival Service
31 July Arkengarthdale Revd David Wood, The
Yorkshire Dales’
Biblical Literacy
Project
30 October Muker Arja Copperwheat
from St. George’s
Crypt, Leeds
Other Projects and Events around the Parish
The vicar was involved in the interviewing and appointment of Mr Andy
Ryland as the new Rural Officer for the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds. He
started work in May 2011 and came to visit the parish and to preach in
the autumn.
Work continues on trying to purchase land for a new churchyard at
Muker.
In April 2011, a sound system was installed in St. Andrew’s, Grinton. This
has been well received and is a great help especially in larger services.
The lighting project in this church is continuing, with help from Mark
Bradshaw, in whose mother’s memory the project has been started.
The Vicar and DCC members have been working on a ‘bat project’ at St.
Andrew’s, Grinton. The aim is to educate ourselves and visitors about the
resident bats. These are a protected species, and there is wider visitor
interest in this. The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust has agreed to fund
some professional display boards with bat information for the church.
Holy Trinity, Low Row continues as a part of the ‘Small Pilgrim Places’
network, offering hospitality to all who visit.

PARISH of SWALEDALE with ARKENGARTHDALE
St. Mary’s Arkengarthdale continue to work towards replacing the roof
and looking at the future shape and use of the church building, as its
200th anniversary approaches.
Holy Trinity Organ Project
The work of refurbishing the organ at Holy Trinity was completed by the
end of 2011, and arrangements made for a formal blessing and
thanksgiving at the 5th Sunday service in January 2012.
Families and Children
There is no formal provision for children on Sundays, but all the churches
have books and toys available for children. Permission has been obtained
to move some pews in order to create an area for children at the back of
St. Andrew’s, Grinton, and the work should happen in 2012.
Mission and Outreach Fund
Money has also come into this fund from donations given at the
children’s events. The events are planned and run by a team which
includes the Vicar, some mothers of the children who attend, and some
members of the church.
Easter
An Easter event was planned, but then cancelled as it clashed with a
Swaledale Seedlings event in Reeth. The Vicar has made sure that we
have communication with the leaders, so this does not happen again.
Christmas
Families were contacted with Christmas greetings and invited to the Crib
Services.
Posada and Advent Events
Posada is an Advent activity when sets of crib figures of Mary and Joseph
travel around the parish, from house to house. This took place at Low
Row and Arkengarthdale during December 2011. At Arkengarthdale,
during a Family Sunday service in Advent, families brought their own crib
figures to be blessed.
Vision Process
In June 2007 we started our ‘Vision Process’ for the parish. There was a
parish vision day in February 2008, led by the Archdeacon. The PCC has
since been working with the ideas and plans that have come out of this
process.

PARISH of SWALEDALE with ARKENGARTHDALE
The first focus was Prayer. These have been the areas of growth:
Prayer Groups and Prayer Accompaniment
Small Pilgrim Places (Holy Trinity, Low Row is a member of this national
network)
Lay led intercessions in Services
Cursillo
Day Retreats
Keld Resource Centre
Learning more about the Bible was our next focus and we worked on
the following areas:
Pew Bibles
Lectio Divina
Workshops on “Reading the Bible in Church”
Lent Meetings on the theme of Learning more about the Bible.
We are now working on the theme of Growing our Christian
Discipleship
As a basis for this we are using a book, “The Radical Disciple” by John
Stott.
Work is currently underway on:
A Stewardship Project, thinking about the gifts and talents that we have
to offer, as well as our money and other resources.
Living Well and Dying Well – helping us and others to think in a
Christian way about dying and issues around the end of life, and the
practicalities of planning one’s funeral.
We will pick up the theme of ‘Welcome, invitation and hospitality’ in
2012
Growing People in Ministry
Retired Ministry
Revd Michael McDermott, who lives in Reeth, has received the Bishop’s
Permission to Officiate, and is now able to lead services in the parish.
Reader Ministry
Mrs Anne Tunley was admitted and licensed as a Reader for this parish in
the autumn of 2009. The PCC has supported Anne through this process
and her ministry across the parish is welcomed and appreciated.
Curate
We look forward to welcoming Elaine Thomas as our curate from 2012.

Ministerial Development Review
The Vicar once again took part in this work based process in 2011 and
Bishop John conducted the review.
The Vicar took part in the following training and other events this year:
-Church Leaders’ retreat at Scargill House
-Diocesan clergy conference at Swanwick
-Multiparish benefice forum at Scargill House
-Deanery clergy residential at Alnmouth Friary
The Vicar is part of the Church on Show team at the Yorkshire Show, and
manages the stewards for this event.
The Vicar also took part in a Countryside Careers Fair at the Yorkshire
Showground, using the Church on Show material.
During 2011, the Vicar was invited to speak at ‘Oasis’, a women’s group
at Holy Trinity, Ripon; Reeth Evangelical Congregational Church ladies’
meeting and at Wensleydale United Service.
Prayer Group
The group has continued to meet monthly for a breakfast prayer time.
Members offer hospitality and leadership. Two Weeks of Guided prayer
(WGP) have been held and 3 more people are waiting. Towards the end
of the year, invitations to contribute to the diocesan Reader's training
day, the parish Lent Course and a WGP based on the cathedral were
accepted.
Keld Resource Centre
Joan Graveson has handed over to Michael Rowntree as the Anglican
representative on the Keld Centre working group. The ecumenical
minister in residence scheme continues, with an Anglican, Revd Alison
Montgomery from Ripon, due to be present for a week in September
2012. The Heritage Centre is finished and now open to visitors.
Student Placements in 2011
We welcomed Dominic Coad, a student from Wescott House, Cambridge,
and David Scott, a Reader in training in York diocese, who each came for
a day to learn about rural ministry.
Working with Partners
Ecumenical Partners
The local Methodist Minister is Rev Alan Coustick, who lives in Leyburn.
The local URC minister is Rev Julie Martin, who lives in Barnard Castle.
The Vicar and these two ministers meet regularly to stay in touch and to
plan joint events and services.

PARISH of SWALEDALE with ARKENGARTHDALE
The Vicar has been to speak annually at the ladies’ group of the Reeth
Evangelical Congregational Church. The Roman Catholic priest from
Richmond is a regular speaker on our Lent Courses.
Swaledale Christian Council
Close working has continued with other denominations through the
Swaledale Christian Council and in joint worship during the Week of
Prayer for Christian Unity, the Women’s World Day of Prayer, Christian
Aid Week, and the Good Friday Walk. An ecumenical Advent Service took
place this year at Reeth Methodist Church.
There is also shared worship at Christmas, Easter and a joint Lent
Course.
The 2011 Lent Course, ‘Paint the Church Green’, looking at the church
and environmental issues, was well attended
Calendars of services at Christmas and Easter were distributed
throughout the two dales.
In September 2011, The Swaledale Christian Council had a stand at
Muker Show; the feedback from this is always positive, and the Christian
presence is appreciated. There are plans to continue this.
Swaledale Festival
The churches continue to support the Festival in providing venues and
refreshments for concerts and other events.
Marrick Priory
The Vicar and Mrs Peggy Purver are Trustees and Directors of Marrick
Priory and the Marrick Priory Trust and in these capacities attend regular
meetings and events at The Priory. The Head of Centre, Mr Jim Gleave
acts as one of two Child Protection representatives for the parish. The
Low Row Village Carol Service held in Holy Trinity in December 2011 also
contributed £600 to Marrick Priory's Bursary Fund.
The World Church
We have been praying for and supporting people involved in Christian
service locally and around the world:
St. George’s Crypt
In December 2009, a group from Leeds led us in ‘Carols for the Crypt’.
Since then we have been building a link with this centre for work with
homeless people. Each church has a collection box for food items, and
members of the parish have also donated clothes and blankets, which
have been sent to Leeds. We welcomed a speaker from The Crypt at a 5th
Sunday service in 2011, and this person will return in 2012 for one of the
Fremington Sunday School talks.

Busoga Trust
The parish continues to support the work of this small water charity in
Uganda. We have received letters of thanks and pictures of a well which
we have been able to provide through our giving. At Harvest time, we
collected money for rainwater collection tanks on homes.
Thank You
We want to express our thanks to the following people:
Revd Frank Lindars and Revd James Crossley for their support of the Vicar
and the parish. Revd James Crossley continues to lead Sunday worship on
a regular basis.
Revd Graham Dear and Canon Richard Cooper who have covered services
for the Vicar as needed. (Canon Richard Cooper moved away in 2011, and
so is no longer able to work with us; his time of ministry here was much
appreciated.)
Our Readers, Mrs Katherine Carr and Mrs Anne Tunley for their ministry
in the parish.
Jackie Warden of Leyburn, who efficiently produces our pew sheets each
week, as well as booklets and orders of service when required.
Janice Freedman, who collects the pew sheets from Leyburn each week.
We record our appreciation to all the lay people who assist in many ways
in our churches.
The PCC wishes particularly to express its appreciation of the
professionalism and support shown by Simon Barningham in what are
always difficult, and sometimes harrowing, circumstances.
Thanks to the Parish Choir and its Conductor and to the organists and
other musicians who enhance our worship.
Finally, thanks to all those from our own churches and the wider
community who faithfully and generously support the four churches of
the parish in many different ways.
We pray for God’s blessing and guidance for the year ahead.

St MARY, MUKER FABRIC REPORT
March 2012
Sole works in 2011 at St Mary's Muker was the guttering painted on the
south side of the church.
The Quinquennial was completed in November and the report has just
been received.

HOLY TRINITY FABRIC REPORT
February 2012
Three major issues have occupied the end of 2011.
The reinstatement of the refurbished organ was accomplished in time for
Christmas. An issue remains over the safety of the bench on the dais.
This is being currently sorted out with John Rowland’s kind help.
Another flood affected the church; this time the beck which normally
flows in a channel to the west of the church overflowed into the old boiler
room, filled it and came out in the top flight of external steps. It
damaged the steep path to the church. Thanks to the local Fire Brigade
Team, who pumped for two hours, no damage was caused to the inside
of the church. Also thanks to Calvert and Jenkinson who responded to a
request for help to repair the path in time for the Sunday service and who
donated their services to the church. The DCC has agreed that when the
Architect comes to discuss the windows, he will be asked to examine the
foundations of the church which are exposed in the boiler room.
The DAC’s advice has been requested regarding the repair of mullions
and glazing. English Heritage has been contacted and we await the 2012
applications forms. The architect has supported the need for the work to
the DAC and an estimate has been received from Crightons.
Most of the small jobs identified in the Risk Assessment 2011 have been
dealt with and the rest are in hand.

Fabric Report 2011
Windows
This project was finally completed during the year.
Roof
This project to reroof the building and repair the plaster ceiling has
reached the tender stage. Associated work such as redecoration is
planned at the same time if costs permit.
Vestry
The asbestos ceiling has been removed and a temporary cladding put up.
The new plaster ceiling will be part of the roof works.
Tower
3 new steps put in the wooden ladder to the Bell Chamber.
New guard rail to the access hatchway with new hinges to the hatch.
Bells-general maintenance work is in progress and includes refurbished
pulley wheels, replacement second hand ropes and some repair to the
large bell wheels.
Exterior
General gutter and downpipe maintenance and new stone drain covers to
the rain disposal drains.
Graveyard
Work on the trees has begun. The yew tree at the S/E corner of the
church has been reduced in height and its appearance is felt to be
acceptable. The felling of the diseased beech tree and crown thinning of
those at the gateway is expected soon.
Sadly a Fir tree on the North side of the building fell unexpectedly in the
recent storms but fortunately did no major damage. We will take a further
look at our trees.
A land drain has been put on the outside of the West wall of the New
Churchyard with the consent of the landowner and thankfully seems to
have solved the problem of water draining through and around adjoining
graves.
Quinquennial
This report was received in the Autumn and contained nothing major that
is not already in the planned work associated with the roof. Some areas
of repointing are required and are scheduled for later in the year.
Our Health and Safety check list has been maintained and there have
been no serious issues.

FABRIC REPORT 2011
Tower
The builders carrying out the quinquennial work (see below) identified
the fact that the lightning conductor was only partially earthed. This has
been rectified. Some minor pointing work has been done.
The frame of the tower door has been repaired and repointed.
A recent inspection has shown that some of the repointing on the west
wall has ‘popped’. Anelays will be asked to repoint again.
Quinquennial Work
The Quinquennium is from 3 June 2008 to 2 June 2013. Almost all the
quinquennial work was carried out in 2011 by Crighton Conservation.
The following repairs have been done:
East gable end wall re-pointed;
Repairs to window mullions, and ferramenta re-painted;
Window openings eased and re-strung;
Merlons above south aisle roof re-seated and cemented;
All rainwater goods repaired or replaced, and re-painted;
Main gateposts repaired and re-pointed, and gates eased.
A few snagging jobs remain to be done. Crightons will be asked to do
these in early summer 2012.
Moat
The moat has been regularly cleared of vegetation and debris, which is an
ongoing task. The drains have all been checked and are running.
Churchyard
The paths have not yet been resurfaced. This work was initially scheduled
for May 2011, then for September 2011. The contractor has promised to
carry out the work in time for the start of the Swaledale Festival on 19
May.
Some of the older headstones need expert attention. The grass was cut
irregularly last summer, partly due to the weather and partly because Bob
Baker had been ill. The church mower which had not been used for two or

three years has been repaired and serviced, and is now operational. We
anticipate that the grass will be cut more regularly this year (although we
have had a wet Spring so far).
Permission has been given by the National Park to trim the yews and a
number of other trees in the churchyard, and remove deadwood. The
work will be done by David Allen Horticultural once the nesting season is
over.
The Harkerside gate was too rotten to be repaired, and was replaced with
a new hardwood gate identical to the old one. The new gate was made by
Philip Calvert, who also repaired the boiler room and tower doors.
The main notice board at the gate was damaged in the January gales, and
finally blown over in an easterly gale in March. Its legs are to be replaced
and strengthened and the notice board refurbished.
Church Roof
Following the grant of a faculty, a roof alarm was installed in May
2011and is functioning. We have had a few false alarms, but no further
attempted thefts of lead. The installers are looking into the false alarm
problem
Sound Reinforcement System
Following the grant of a faculty, the new sound system was installed in
April 2011, and has been used regularly in services and concerts since
then. Apart from some minor problems of radio interference (now
conclusively identified as being due to mobile phones switched on in
church), the system has worked well, and has also been used to play
recorded music at weddings and funerals.
Children’s Corner
Apart from final staining and polishing, the work on the children’s corner
is complete. It has a new carpet, and a rug made by Heather Ritchie and
a quilt by Kate Trusson, and has proved to be very popular.
Interior generally
The fabric is sound but wet rot has been discovered in the wall plates in
the north and south aisles. The Diocesan Architect is seeking advice from
an independent timber consultant. Any rotten sections of timber will need
to be carefully replaced.

New Lighting Scheme
A new lighting concept has been agreed in principle, subject to a detailed
scheme and budget.
We are now working with Mike Overton, the Diocesan Architect, who is
sourcing samples of light fittings. Once final design decisions have been
made, we will be inviting tenders and preparing a faculty application.
Fundraising is continuing and will be stepped up once we know what the
final scheme will cost, and an application for DAC approval will be made
prior to the application for the grant of a faculty.
Health & Safety
Regular inspections are made of the building and the churchyard to
ensure that any health and safety issues are dealt with promptly.
