STD CLINIC HIGHLIGHTS
During 2001, the Communicable Disease Prevention Program continued to provide STD clinical and educational services
for the community. The Program also operated the CDC funded PM Clinic at 2400 Troost in the STD Clinic every
Thursday from 2:30 pm until 6:30 pm. Complete clinical services were provided from 2:30 pm until to 4:00 pm. After
4:00 pm, no physical exams were done on patients. Only urine testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, blood testing for
Syphilis and HIV, medication for confirmed cases or exposure to an STD as well as DIS counseling was provided. Area
schools were provided with flyers regarding the clinic services including information on taxi vouchers available for
transportation to and from the clinic. PM Clinic statistics are provided in Attachment A.

DISEASE INTERVENTION ACTIVITIES

The STD (sexually transmitted disease) intervention component of the Communicable Disease Prevention
Program is designed to provide individual case management and referral services for those at highest risk. This
will assist in precluding the spread of infection and ultimately control STDs in the community. This activity is
performed by Disease Intervention Staff (DIS) who interview and counsel infected patients to ensure the
referral of sex partners and others who are potentially infected.

CHLAMYDIA

During 2001, the CDP Program diagnosed 301 cases of Chlamydia. The DIS conducted 372 interviews of
patients treated in the STD clinic for positive Chlamydia tests. Of those interviewed – 211 were identified by
the STD clinic, 84 from other clinics, 22 from hospitals, 20 for emergency rooms, 15 from family planning, 10
from prenatal/obstetrics, 5 from private physicians, 1 from labs from prenatal/obstetrics, and 4 unknown.

Of the 372 interviewed, 357 were female and 15 were male, with 85% (317) African American, 9% (32)
Caucasian, 3% (12) Hispanic, 1% (2) Asian American, and 2% (9) unknown. The clinic population interviewed

the interviewed clinic morbidity: 64130 (58), 64128 (36), 64109 (29), 64128 (28) and 64127 (27). The DIS
elicited 255 contacts from Chlamydia interviews for a contact index of .69. A total of 196 (77%) contacts were
examined; 160 (82%) were examined within 7 days of initiation. Dispositions for these field records are located
in Attachment B.

During 2001, the CDP Program dispositioned 424 field records through patient follow-up. A total of 311 (73%)
patients were examined, 192 (62%) were examined within 7 days of being initiated. Dispositions for these field
