Enter -- the new VoIP companies with a solution. They have overcome this hurdle. You’ve probably seen some of the commercials on TV. Let’s take a look at these companies. What about those Internet phone companies that advertise on TV so much? There are a number of companies that provide Internet phone service as an alternative to a regular phone line from your local phone company. Vonage, Lingo, VoicePulse, and Packet8 are a few of the better-known companies. Vonage is the world’s largest VoIP service provider in terms of paying customers. I think everyone has probably seen those crazy “Woo-Hoo” Vonage TV commercials. Vonage and these other Internet phone companies allow you to call more than just PC to PC. You can call anyone with a phone number in the US, Canada, and many other countries according to the particular plan and 3 availability. The call goes over the Internet to the called party’s local telephone company for the completion of the call. They do this by providing a special adapter that allows you to connect your regular telephone to your computer. The adapter converts your voice into a digital signal that can be routed over the Internet. You will need to have broadband or high-speed Internet access. Your phone will work exactly the same as if it were plugged into a regular phone line. You’ll have dial tone, you’ll have a number that people can dial, and your phone will ring. You can even keep your same phone number or request a new one. Now, this is certainly much better than only being able to call someone who has a PC set up with the correct software and equipment, but this Internet phone service is not free. These companies charge a fee for their service ranging from $15 to $50 a month for a package, some offering a given number of minutes, others unlimited calling. While it may be cheaper than a regular landline, it’s not free. Verizon and some other traditional telephone companies are also now in the Internet phone service business. Internet phone service is big business and growing bigger. Cable companies that provide TV and Internet service are becoming big players in the Internet phone service market. Ebay recently announced that they would pay $2.6 billion in a mixture of cash and shares to purchase Skype. If Skype hits certain targets, bonus payments of $1.5 billion will be made. Skype, the world’s largest VoIP service provider provides free Internet phone calls to other Skype users (PC to PC calls) and much reduced charges for other phone calls to regular phones. Skype boasts over 200 million downloads of its software have been made. 4 Is there a Difference between Local and Long Distance Calling? Some VoIP providers charge for a long distance call made to a number outside your calling area. Others permit you to call anywhere for a flat rate for a fixed number of minutes. Be sure to find out what the plan allows before signing up. Some VoIP providers allow you to select a phone number with an area code different from the one where you live. This can allow others in that area to call you as a local call, but remember that those in your local area will incur long distance charges when they call you depending on their service. Does My Computer Have to be Turned On to Make and Receive Calls? Your computer will not need to be turned on if you are using an adapter or special VoIP phone. Your broadband Internet connection will need to be active. Are there advantages to switching to Internet Phone Service other than saving money? Yes. Depending on the Internet phone company, you can get a whole host of features at no extra cost. Many of the following features may be included: voice mail, call-waiting, 3-way calling, call forwarding, call transfer, and many more. You can take your adapter with you when you travel and receive calls to your selected number. You will be able to work on your computer while talking on the phone. You will never have to deal with the local phone company again. You’ll never be concerned with hidden charges, fees, taxes, and the hassle of dealing with them again. 5 Are there disadvantages to switching your phone to an Internet Phone Company? Yes. Your Internet connection will not be as reliable as your traditional telephone line. Power outages are more likely to affect Internet service to your home and some say outages occur frequently with some Internet phone service. Some Internet phone companies may not provide seamless 911 service and the location of Internet voice 911 callers may not be automatically available to the 911 dispatch center like it is with a regular land-line phone.
