A Newsletter for Northwest Catholic’s Parent Community
Minutes from the January Parents Club Meeting
Mrs. Williamson began our meeting with a prayer used in response to the school’s theme for the week, “Respect for Life.”
In her Principal’s Report, she noted that the second semester is now under way. Grades for the last marking period have
been posted, and the course selection process for next year has begun. Each grade met with its primary guidance counselor
for that grade, and students have submitted their courses via Edline. The staff development day that was canceled in January
due to snow has been rescheduled for Mon., Feb. 25 -– extending students’ vacation by one day. The final school day of the
year will be determined in April (after snow season!); tentatively, it’s June 17. NWC teachers and staff continue to use the
Professional Learning Community model.
A schoolwide Mass was held on Jan. 7. Archbishop Mansell will celebrate Mass at NWC on Feb. 29. Volunteer opportunities
for our students abound, from tutoring students to providing and serving meals in nearby soup kitchens. The juniors have
chosen their class charity, Y-US, and will collect school supplies for needy students.
Mrs. Williamson cited several activities scheduled for Catholic Schools Week (marking the end of Catholic Schools Month).
Students are preparing a musical tribute for Black History Month; it will be performed for parents on Feb. 14 at 7pm.
This year’s spring musical is “Anything Goes;” rehearsals are under way, and the show will be Apr. 4–6. Spectators are
always welcome and appreciated at any school sporting event.
NWC will host West Hartford’s Relay for Life, supporting the American Cancer Society, on June 13-14, 2008.
The school’s web site was relaunched on Dec. 17; though still a work in progress, it is much more user friendly.
Planning is under way for NWC’s annual golf tournament, which will be held on Monday, June 2. Many parent volunteers,
golfers, and sponsors are needed! Please contact Jane Leary, firstname.lastname@example.org or x131.
Saturday Night Live resulted in a profit of $37,000! This number has doubled in the past 5 years. Co-chairs Carol Ciotto and
Gail Riley have expressed their thanks for the team effort that made this year’s event such a huge success. The next SNL --
the “Silver Jubilee,” celebrating the 25th anniversary of the event – will be held on Nov. 22, 2008.
Set aside Tuesday, Mar. 18, for our next Parents Club meeting, featuring the President’s Report from School President
We adjourned for refreshments before reconvening in the auditorium to hear from our guest speaker, best-selling author and
psychologist Anthony Wolf, Ph.D.

Congratulations to …
Jessica Gioia, Hannah Pelton, Kenneth Rousseau, and Carolyn Spalluto, all seniors, who have been named
Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Program – the largest number in school history. Qualification as a
Finalist is based on the scores the students earned on the PSAT/NMSQT taken in October of junior year. About
1.4 million students took the test at that time, and about 15,000 have been named Finalists.
The NWC Advanced Jazz Band, for winning an Honorable Mention on Feb. 9 at the Berklee Jazz Festival in
Boston, which attracts national competition. This is the first time in school history that a NWC jazz band or choir
has won an award at this prestigious festival. In addition, Judges’ Choice awards were awarded to Chris Brown
’08 (for vocal and instrumental solos – he plays the vibes) and Brian Flanagan ’08 (for a trombone solo).
Michael Davis ‘08, who won a $300 savings bond and a certificate of appreciation from the American Legion
Hayes-Velhage Post 96 for his participation in a Constitutional oratorical contest held in January. Michael tied as
a runner-up in the contest with a student from Conard High School.

So we can plan for the right amount of food, tickets must be purchased in advance; they will be available in the school
office from Tues., Mar. 25-Tues., Apr. 1. And, to make this fundraiser a success, we seek donations of food and paper
goods and volunteers to work that night. To offer your time or to donate needed items, please contact Cindy Gworek at

Northwest Catholic welcome Mrs. Joanne Martorelli as a long-term substitute for two sophomore English classes that had
been taught by Sarah Desroches, who departed NWC at the end of the first semester. Other NWC teachers are taking
over Mrs. Desroches’ other classes. We also welcome Mrs. Katie Rose (email@example.com), who will be Mrs. Williamson’s
new assistant, and we wish all the best to Mrs. Karen Tyler, who will now be working at the Office of Catholic Schools.
~ New Uniform Option This Spring ~
Girls have the option of trying something new with their uniform this spring: a white, short-sleeved
overblouse with the Northwest Catholic logo (item #45080AZ1N119; school code WB00NW). This is just a trial
run – the decision about whether to add this item permanently to the dress code for next year will be made
after assessing its success. Thus, it is not being offered to incoming freshmen at this time. Also, since the
material for the grey herringbone kilt is no longer available, the fabric for that skirt has been changed to a
heather grey poly-gabardine. Girls who own the wool kilt may still wear that. Look for more details about the
NWC uniform at dennisuniform.com (800-854-6951); order forms will also be available in the school office.
Attention ClAss of ’08 PArents:
Believe it or not, it’s time -- time to plan for graduation!
Information and registration material about the post-graduation cruise on the Connecticut River will be coming soon.
Payment will be due by April ll. The cruise committee will be reaching out to all parents for donations of money and/or
items that can will be raffled on the cruise. There will be lots of other ways to help, too – watch Edline for details. Please
consider lending your support to this tradition of sending our seniors off to college in grand Northwest Catholic-style!
