In response my “rant” after communion last week to the letter sent from the diocese to those Great Falls
Catholic household in the 59404 and 59414 zip codes, Bishop Warfel has made the following clarification:
Dear Fr. Dick,
I just returned from a week long backpacking trip in the Bob Marshall. While I was away, a letter to
Catholic families in the 59404 and 59414 zip codes was sent out under my signature (I’ve got an electronic one
that we sometimes use when I’m out of the office). Fr. Jay and I had discussed the contents a few weeks back. I
understand that you were quite angry about the letter in the sense that it was telling those who were parishioners
of Holy Spirit that they now had to go either to St. Luke’s, St. Joe’s or Blessed Sacrament.
This was not the intent of the letter. People may register in any parish in the city or even outside the city,
e.g., if they want to go to Cascade. The letter even notes that a household may be registered in one of the other
parishes in the city and, basically, it was being sent to everyone for information since they lived in the more
Anyway, it was one of the first things I heard about after returning from a week off and thought I’d
better correct any misconceptions. So, if some one asks you, I am not asking people to be registered with the
specific parish boundary in which they reside.
