THE PINK LIST FICTION ADAIR, GilbertALEXANDER, NickBuenos Noches, Buenos Aires 50 Reasons to Say Goodbye Sottopassagio Code of Submission Seven Moves He kills coppers Johnny Come Home ALEXANDER, Paul CANSHAW, CarolARNOTT, Jake- This is a gripping tale of emotional and political ferment in 70s London from the author of the bestselling "Long Firm" trilogy. London, 1972, and a charismatic anarchist called O'Connell dies of an overdose, leaving his artist boyfriend, Pearson, and fellow activist Nina in shock. It also leaves a spare room in their squat, so Pearson moves in Sweet Thing, a streetwise yet vulnerable young rent boy he initially picks up but then tries to help. Pearson isn't the only one who's interested though - glam rock star Johnny Chrome is on the brink of a breakdown and is convinced that Sweet Thing is the only one who can bring him back. As Sweet Thing gets drawn further into Johnny Chrome's dangerous orbit, Pearson and Nina discover that O'Connell was not all he seemed. In this tautly paced, highly evocative novel Jake Arnott once again combines brilliant storytelling with a flawless portrait of a changing era, when the optimism of the 60s was giving way to the anger and bombs of the early 70s. Her best friend Ruby is 40 and fondling every man she can, and her neighbours are the OAPs from Hell. Balham will never be the same again! Back Around the Houses 2 BOYLE, T.C- The Inner Circle In 1939 on the campus of Indiana University, a revolution has begun. The stir is caused by Alfred Kinsey, a zoologist who is determined to take sex out of the bedroom. John Milk, a freshman, is enthralled by the professor's daring lectures and over the next two decades becomes Kinsey's right hand man. But Kinsey teaches Milk more than the art of objective enquiry. Behind closed doors, he is a sexual enthusiast of the highest order and as a member of his 'inner circle' of researchers, Milk is called on to participate in experiments that become increasingly uninhibited. BURNETT, AllisonBUFFORD, BridgetBURROUGHS, WilliamBURSTON, PaulBURTON, PETER (Editor)- Christopher Minus One Naked Lunch Shameless Serendipity : The Gay Times Book of New Stories 3 BRYSON, Kathleen Kiink- Mush For me, the story about four people and how the death of one has affected the others, directly or indirectly, is powerful stuff. Sometimes I didn't want to explore too deeply my own feeling towards what was happening to the characters. 'Mush' is always challenging, never lets you go, picks you up by the scruff of your neck and shakes you about until you want to shout for it to stop. And then it goes further. It's definitely not for those who like to read about fluffy bunnies and sip a cup of horlicks before going to bed, but for those of you who like modern fiction that doesn't follow the welltrodden path this is gold dust! CALHOURN, Jackie CALLOWAY, Kate- Abby’s Passion 8th day Fourth Down On the Wings of Love Adam and Steve Burden of Ashes Running Dry CARTER, MeganCHESTER, CraigCHIN, JustinCHRISTIAN, M- A wicked tale of vengeance, loyalty and the inherent humanity of the inhuman. Ernst Doud is a middle-aged 154 year old non-human painter living quietly in Los Angeles when he receives a cryptic letter from a lover he last saw in 1913, precisely at the moment he killed him - or so he had always thought. So begins M. Christian's debut novel, as unlike any book you have read as Doud is unlike any hero who has ever graced the pages of a novel. Set in contemporary Los Angeles, with excursions into the surreal outback of Southern California's high desert, "Running Dry" is a stunningly realised story of vengeance, loyalty and the inherent humanity of the inhuman. He learns about a power that inhibits him - a power he was born with that brings out the very truth in people. DUNFORD, Warren- Soon to be a Major Motion Picture The Oversight Distant palaces Middlesex EAVES, WillESTEVEZ, ABILIOEUGENIDES, Jeffrey- In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blond classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, Cal has inherited a rare genetic mutation. The biological trace of a guilty secret, this gene has followed her grandparents from the crumbling Ottoman Empire to Detroit and has outlasted the glory days of the Motor City, the race riots of 1967, and the family's second migration, into the foreign country known as suburbia. Thanks to the gene, Cal is part girl, part boy. And even though the gene's epic travels have ended, her own odyssey has only begun. Sprawling across eight decades - and one unusually awkward adolescence - Jeffrey Eugenides' long-awaited second novel is a grand, utterly original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire. 6 FASCHINGER, Lillian- Vienna Passion Rosa Havelka is a woman of her time. From a Prague orphange to the bedrooms of the Austro-Hungarian court. Rosa shines through the sordid glamour of fin de siecle Vienna, and makes it her own. In her footsteps follows Magnolia Brown, a young New Yorker beginning a tentative romance with her singing teacher in modern day Vienna. FAULKS, SebastianFORD, Michael Thomas- Birdsong Last Summer Looking for It An Emergence of Green The Beverly Malibu Daughters of an Emerald Dusk Lesbian Pulp Fiction Murder at the Nightwood Bar Murder by Tradition Maurice FORREST, Katherine V. FORSTER, E.M- Maurice Hall is a young man who grows up confident in his privileged status and well aware of his role in society. Modest and generally conformist, he nevertheless finds himself increasingly attracted to his own sex. Through Clive, whom he encounters at Cambridge, and through Alec, the gamekeeper on Clive's country estate, Maurice gradually experiences a profound emotional and sexual awakening. A tale of passion, bravery and defiance, this intensely personal novel was completed in 1914 but remained unpublished until after Forster's death in 1970. Compellingly honest and beautifully written, it offers a powerful condemnation of the repressive attitudes of British society, and is at once a moving love story and an intimate tale of one man's erotic and political self-discovery. The result was a really entertaining book, i genuinely enjoyed it. A couple of the characters and situations were a little unrealistic for what seemed to be a fairly down to earth novel. Remember that guy you really fancied in school because he was tough, popular and edgy. Well now imagine that you actually got it on with him.... That's what makes this novel entertaining. It's a real opportunity to fantasise. Banned on publication in 1928, it then went on to become a classic bestseller. Stephen Gordon (named by a father desperate for a son) is not like other girls: she hunts, she fences, she reads books, wears trousers and longs to cut her hair. As she grows up amidst the stifling grandeur of Morton Hall, the locals begin to draw away from her, aware of some indefinable thing that sets her apart. And when Stephen Gordon reaches maturity, she falls passionately in love - with another woman. HANSEN, Joseph- Gravedigger Skinflick 8 HART, Ellen- Faint Praise Hunting the Witch The Merchant of Venus City Secrets (short stories) Rock n’ Roll Suicide Sixteen HARTNETT, P.P- Steven lives for the school holidays, touring the swimming pools, talking about the music he loves and enjoying the attention as he pauses on the highest diving platform. Growing up surrounded by the images on pop videos and teen magazines, Steven soon learnt that a look can be provocative, that a smile can be a come-on. Carl understands the lure of the image. As a consultant in the music industry, he creates the boy bands that dominate the charts and fill the record shops. When he meets Steven at the local swimming pool, it is inevitable that his svengali side comes to the fore. But even he does not know what he really wants: is his interest personal, could it be professional? And how far is he prepared to exploit the appeal of a sixteen year old? HEIM, Scott- Mysterious Skin Daring, controversial, intelligent, beautiful, emotional, these are just a few of the words to describe this masterpiece. From the beginning it has you gripping the next page, wondering were the characters path in life will next take its turn. There are also points in the book that arguably could be edited, although the fact that they remain, makes this book seem even more of a work of art. Its rawness and beauty make it original and well worth a read. I hope to be reading more books from this amazing author in the near future. JONES, Sonya (ed)KALLMAKER, Karin- A Sea of Stories Car Pool Frosting on the Cake Making Up for Lost Time One Degree of Seperation Substitute for Love Sugar Wild Things A Married Woman Trumpet KAPUR, ManjuKAY, Jackie- Jackie Kay's first novel is a curious and haunting story about mixed-race jazz trumpeter Joss Moody (Irish mother, black father), who turns out, on his death, to have been a woman all along. The story begins with that discovery. Thereafter it traces its consequences for his white wife Millie, who always knew, and his adopted black son Colman, who didn't. Millie rehearses the stages of her relationship with Joss, reworking an intense and abiding love and commitment in which gender is, oddly, never really an issue. Colman, by contrast, is driven, in the period immediately following his father's death, by anger and an intense feeling of betrayal, to try to "out" his father and complete his humiliation as a kind of personal expiation. As he retraces the steps of Joss's life, however, he begins gradually to change his mind. Kay has won acclaim for her poetry. Here she shows that she can harness her plangent voice to a narrative, producing writing of real maturity. Race and gender are deftly woven into its fabric, without insistence, to reveal a troubling ordinariness about fragmentation and confusions of identity in contemporary British life. In the 60s and 70s no self-respecting low-budget bloodily schlocky shocker was complete without the Queen of the Vampires presiding over it. She was well qualified for it, after all...at the age of ten she sold her soul to the devil. Now, although spookily ageless, Karla is knocking on in years. Her residuals are drying up and she needs some cash, so she decides to return to the north of England, to Manchester, to appear in Menswear, Britain's riskiest television soap opera. Not everyone's happy about her return to the fame game, however. The current star of the late-night show is Lance Randall, the famously bisexual actor, and he is furious to hear that Karla is about to become his co-star. He hates her, he fears her, and he's convinced that she's coming to steal his very soul. A Matter of Life and Sex MO, TimothyMOORE, Lisa CMOORE, Oscar- For anyone who has felt alone, confused or repressed by their own sexuality. At times perhaps despondent; homophobic even, this book explores a very English kind of coming out. An English expression of sexuality for someone growing up without positive role models. It is dirty and horny; elating and lonely. I felt exquisitely touched by this book. The HIV issue came late and reminded me of how I had perhaps escaped the real trauma years. This was not without a touch of sorrow. For those who are gay, or with gay friends they sometimes find confusing, this book is like reading a friends diary. And the path to this curious and frightening predicament has itself been filled with incredible moments. It began on South Ronaldsay amongst the singing seals and ancient ruins of Orkney. There a lad grew up with a rare gift for loving - something that proved much trickier than it sounds. He encountered misunderstanding, bullying, loss and heartbreak. And yet the physical heights he reached - and to which he brought others - went far beyond any normal sensual pleasure. This led to the sort of sex that made people see angels. Indeed when the lad actually lost his virginity, it was to a glorious Dane called Engel who fell - literally - out of the sky, entangled in a huge kite tail. This remarkable story about the power of love veers from stratosphere to gutter, from visions of Heaven to the all-too mortal yearning below for even just one glimpse of it. In considering each person or pair the following questions are asked: were the women "infits" or "outfits" in terms of their sexuality?; how were their relationships conducted?; how much did social status/background dictate the extent of their openness or compromise?; what sort of role models where they in their day to other women?; and what legacy did they create, if any, to the status/visibility of the contemporary lesbian?. But for many of those working in more blue-collar, male-dominated environments, the workplace remains a place of secrets and fear of discovery. In this new collection, journalist Dan Woog, who has previously examined the intersections - and often collisions - of sexual identity and societal expectations in fields such as athletics (Jocks) and education (School's Out) applies his sharp, empathetic skills to these profiles of gay men who work in what might traditionally be thought of as 'straight jobs'. Construction work, trading on the Stock Market, playing professional football, and fighting fires are just a few of the professions that seem to attract only straight men. But, of course, appearances don't always match reality. GAY MEN, STRAIGHT JOBS reveals the liberating, frightening and sometimes tragic experiences of gay men working in these environments, and spotlights in an intimate, thought-provoking way the important truths about what makes today's society truly work. 362.196 TAYLOR, Jean387.508 BAKER, Paul and Jo Stanley- The C word: a Story of Cancer Hello Sailor 'From Quentin Crisp cavorting with US marines in "The Naked Civil Servant" to Jean Genet, Fassbinder and "Querelle", a celebration of sailors has long been a part of gay culture. As that story closed, George was coming to terms with the fall-out from his drug addiction, the failure of his relationship with Jon Moss and the collapse of Culture Club. For lesser men this would have been the end but for George it became the start of a period of startling personal and creative reinvention. Told with George's trademark biting wit, brutal honesty and sparkling insight, this new book will bring his remarkable story up to date and follow his quest for personal happiness and creative success. Take It Like A Man saw George's struggle against drugs come to dominate his rapid rise to fame; this book will be an even more fascinating insight into what makes this superstar tick, tracing the momentous twists and turns of his personal and artistic life over the last decade-anda-half to include his role as a world-class DJ spearheading the dance music revolution in clubs all over the world, his cutting-edge record label, and his role as the driving force behind and star of the theatrical sensation, Taboo, which recently opened on Broadway. Love and Human Remains The Third Eye 823 NAMJOSHI, Suniti915.213 BARBER, Stephen941.072 MOORE, LucyGoja: An Autobiographical Myth Tokyo Vertigo Amphibious Thing Lord Hervey was one of the most controversial figures of the Georgian age. The consummate courtier--strikingly handsome, elegant and witty--he was both the favourite of the Queen and right-hand man to Walpole. Painted by Hogarth, satirised by Fielding and Pope, and confidant of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Hervey counted among his friends and enemies some of the most brilliant men and women of the age. Yet for all his hard-won public fame, there was a scandalous private side to Hervey. He was certainly a rake (rumour had it that he shared a mistress with the Prince of Wales), but such behaviour was quite normal among the 18th-century aristocracy. Less usual, however, was his 10-year affair with another man. From the outset, Hervey was fascinated by Stephen Fox. His engaging, delightfully witty letters reveal the depth of their passion for one another, and the lengths to which they were driven in order to escape detection. Finally, their became an "open secret", one of the many factors that was to contribute to Hervey's downfall. In this entertaining and wonderfully observed biography, Lucy Moore brings to life an entire age, with its shimmering artifice and its poisonous deceit, its highly wrought melodrama and its grand passions. 943.155 GAY, Peter32 My German Question Autobiographies and Biographies. B/ BUR BURROUGHS, AugustenDry: A Memoir You may not know it, but you've met Augusten Burroughs. You've seen him on the street, in bars, on the underground, at restaurants: a twenty-something guy, nice suit, works in advertising. Regular. Ordinary. But when the ordinary person had two drinks, Augusten was circling the drain by having twelve; when the ordinary person went home at midnight, Augusten never went home at all. Loud, distracting ties, automated wake-up calls and aftershave on the tongue could only hide so much for so long. At the request (well, it wasn't really a request) of his employers, Augusten lands in rehab, where his dreams of group therapy with Robert Downey Jr are immediately dashed by the grim reality of flourescent lighting and paper hospital slippers. But when Augusten is forced to examine himself, something actually starts to click, and that's when he finds himself in the worst trouble of all. Because when his thirty days are up, he has to return to his same drunken Manhattan life - and live it sober. What follows is a memoir that's as moving as it is funny, as heartbreaking as it is real. B/BUR Burroughs, Augesten- Running with Scissors This is the story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of grandeur) gave him away to be raised by her psychiatrist, a dead ringer for Santa Claus and a certifiable lunatic into the bargain. Suddenly at the age of 12, Augusten found himself living in a dilapidated Victorian house in perfect squalor. The doctor's bizarre family, a few patients and a paedophile living in the garden shed completed the tableau. Here, there were no rules or school. The Christmas tree stayed up until Summer and valium was chomped down like sweets. When things got a bit slow, there was always the ancient electroshock therapy machine under the stairs. B/ CAM CAMERON, Rhona- 1979: A Big Year in a Small Town Nineteen Seventy-nine takes place in a small fishing town called Musselburgh, situated on the east coast of Scotland. It's about a young girl who is very naive yet incredibly self-aware in the year that changed her life forever - an evocative, moving and at times hilarious true-life story about growing up gay in a small town, finding out you're adopted, and losing your father at the age of 14. Always an outsider, the Rhona of 1979 was desperate to fit in at any cost, and here lies the bittersweet humour. At the heart of the book is the Clubhouse, a place that symbolises all that is normal, happy, and secure. Sons with their fathers; 15 year-old boys with their girlfriends for their first underage drink. Wives with their husbands for the Christmas disco. And behind the club, outside, Rhona and her friends are smoking, fighting, kissing and drinking. In this darkly funny and deeply biographical first book, Rhona Cameron takes us back to a year when everything seemed to change. A new British government came to power, the Eighties were approaching and at times life felt so precarious that it really looked like she and her family might never make it through the next year, let alone the next decade... 33 B/CLA CLARY, Julian- A Young Man’s Passage A long way from the usual ghosted celebrity autobiography, this is Julian Clary's debut as a writer of huge talent - perhaps closer in style to Fay Weldon or Muriel Spark than Dale Winton. Julian has led a unique life. From boarding school, where unholy monks taught him the rudiments of glamour, alternative living and brutality, through to art school in London while the punk and alternative comedy revolution was in full swing, finding out by practical trial and error whether he was gay or straight, his huge success and fame as probably the most high profile gay man in the country and, during the same period, the pain of losing those close to him and the high price of his fame. This is the first time he has voiced his private life and he will bring to its telling all the elegance, economy and integrity that have always informed his comedy. And, possibly, the odd double entendre. B/CRI CRISP, Quentin- How To Become A Virgin In this account of his youth, Quentin Crisp describes the stresses and strains of homosexual life. Crisp wandered the world of London's bedsits and late-night cafes, encountering both hostility and tenderness. He faced a life of short-lived jobs and relationships with humour and intelligence. The Naked Civil Servant In this autobiography, Quentin Crisp describes his unhappy childhood and the stresses of adolescence that led him to London. There in bedsits and cafes he found a world of brutality and comedy, of shortlived jobs and precarious relationships. All of which he faced with humour and intelligence. Resident Alien: The New York Diaries Quentin Crisp's witty and yet profound diaries cover four years of hectic cosmopolitan life. At an age when most people are moving into nursing homes, Crisp has launched himself into life in New York. B/DOT DOTY, Mark- Firebird: A Memoir A gay poet recounts his difficult childhood and the experiences that shaped him as a writer. B/EVE HOWARD, JohnetteThe Rivals: Chris Evert vs. Martina Navratilova - Their Epic Duels and Extraordinary Friendship In March 1973 two women met on a tennis court in Akron, Ohio. Over the course of the next sixteen years, together they would change the world. In their long careers Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert played each other eighty times, sixty of those in finals. For twelve consecutive years, from 1975 to 1986, one or other finished the season ranked No. 1 in the world. Each set out to be the finest player women's tennis had ever seen; each goaded the other to greatness. Their contrasting styles - Martina, the epitome of serve-and-volley tennis, bravely charging to the net against cool and controlled Chris, the world's greatest baseline player - captivated millions across the globe. Tennis was a chauvinistic game when they arrived. But their brilliance demanded, and received, long-overdue respect for female sporting achievement. Their ability to forge a close friendship amidst their fierce competition still provokes 34 wonder and admiration from fans. There has never been a sporting rivalry to match the intensity, longevity, public impact and emotional resonance of the years-long duel between these two great athletes. For nearly two decades we were transfixed by the struggle between the ice-maiden Chris - blonde, all-American, a nation's sweetheart and the supreme athlete Martina, a Czech defector, the first outspoken openly gay athlete in female sport, and a woman who wore her heart on her sleeve at all times. Their lockstep careers played out against the backdrop of seismic change in sport and society: the women's movement; the gay rights' movement; the fall of the Iron Curtain; and the rise of women's tennis from backwater to big time (with a huge nod of gratitude to Billie Jean King). Thirty years on from the first meeting, both have become legends. Based on interviews with both Martina and Chris and those who knew them best, Johnette Howard gives us the story of these two remarkable women. Brilliantly researched, beautifully written, Unrivalled will be read by those who love sport for years to come. B/FRY FRY, Stephen- Moab Is My Washpot 'Stephen Fry is one of the great originals... This autobiography of his first twenty years is a pleasure to read, mixing outrageous acts with sensible opinions in bewildering confusion... That so much outward charm, self-awareness and intellect should exist alongside behaviour that threatened to ruin the lives of innocent victims, noble parents and Fry himself, gives the book a tragic grandeur and lifts it to classic status.' Financial Times 'A remarkable, perhaps even unique, exercise in autobiography... that aroma of authenticity that is the point of all great autobiographies; of which this, I rather think, is one' Evening Standard 'He writes superbly about his family, about his homosexuality, about the agonies of childhood... some of his bursts of simile take the breath away... his most satisfying and appealing book so far' Observer B/ISH PARKER, Peter- Isherwood: A Biography The definitive biography of one of the twentieth century's greatest novelists Born into the English landed gentry, the heir to a substantial country estate, Christopher Isherwood ended up in California, an American citizen and the disciple of a Hindu swami. En route, he became a leading writer of the 1930's generation, an unmatched chronicler of pre-Hitler Berlin, an experimental dramatist, a war reporter, a travel writer, a pacifist, a Hollywood screenwriter, a monk, and a grand old man of the emerging gay liberation movement. In this biography, the first to be written since Isherwood's death, and the only one with access to all Isherwood's papers, Peter Parker traces the long journey of a man who never felt at home wherever he lived. Isherwood's travels were a means of escape: from his family, his class, his country, and the dead weight of the past. Parker reveals the truth about Isherwood's relationship with his war-hero father, his strong-willed mother, and his disturbed younger brother, Richard, who was also homosexual. He also draws upon a vast number of letters to describe Isherwood's complicated relationships with such lifelong friends as W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Edward Upward and John Lehmann. The result is a frank portrait of contradictions, a man searching for meaning in life, and one of the twentieth century's most significant writers. 35 B/JAR PEAKE, Tony- Derek Jarman Biographies undertaken by acquaintances of the subject can so assault the senses with over-preened apologia that one would be forgiven for chomping on lemons to counter the gooiness. Tony Peake, former literary agent of Derek Jarman, proves an honourable exception, for in this oddly conventional yet superb account of an anything but conventional life, he remembers with discerning clarity the maverick talent and the talented maverick. As Betts, Jarman's mother, confided to her husband, "I'm so glad our children haven't grown up normal. They're so much more interesting than their friends." Jarman came to be known as much for going public on being HIVpositive and for the subsequent campaigning work he did for AIDS awareness and the militant gay group "Outrage". His homosexuality certainly informed his art, though for many it may also have obstructed it--but that would be a criticism of the artist, not the man. He came to film relatively late; painting was perhaps his first love (he was short listed for the 1986 Turner Prize), certainly staying with him as a constant form of expression until his final days, and he was also a prolific writer, with several volumes of autobiography and journals published, and a final one due to appear in early 2000. If mythology informed his art, it also shaped his life and Peake shows redoubtable resolution in trying to pin down the facts in the face of constant reinvention and artistic licence. Jarman was an original film-maker, perhaps not great, but always searchingly imaginative, and if his films show flaws, the charge can never be laid that they lack ambition and vision, something conspicuously absent from the work of so many of his British contemporaries. His later works, made in the shadow of his personal sword of Damocles, are steeped in unavoidable poignancy, stripped of the eager rawness of the youthful Jubilee and The Tempest. And always behind the artifice and polemic lay a gentle, warm man, devoted to his gardening, a constant that spanned his life. Where others may plunder, Tony Peake has crafted an intimate, sensitive account, unafraid of home truths, yet commendably slow to judge; he shows the seams, but wisely doesn't remark on the stitch work. B/MOE ADAIR, Gilbert- The Real Tadzio; Thomas Mann’s “Death in Venice” and the Boy Who Inspired It Whilst visiting Venice in 1911 Thomas Mann's eye was drawn to a young sailorsuited boy of almost supernatural beauty, and was inspired to write "Death in Venice". This is a biography of that boy, who went on to lead a life as rich and as full of twists as any piece of fiction. B/NOR NORTON, Graham So Me Hugely entertaining and refreshingly honest, So Me is the memoir everybody has been waiting for. Graham Norton, whose impish charm and quick wit has earned him a place in our hearts, looks back at his life so far, a personal journey that begins in a remote village in Ireland forty years ago. Packed with anecdotes about his time at Cork University before dropping out and joining a commune of hippies in San Francisco, about his disastrous attempts at becoming a serious actor and about the rise of his comedy career in London, this is a hilarious, insightful and at times moving account of a very colourful life. As Norton puts it himself, So Me is "a real romp through a journey from living in a cockroach-infested council flat in Hackney to buying Claudia Schiffer's townhouse in Manhattan, from my mother dragging me to school to me dragging her to Sharon Stone's house for New Year's brunch". 36 Containing Graham Norton's trademark stamp of surreal humour and wry observation, So Me is a treat for all of the presenter's millions of fans. B/ NOR BOWYER, Alison Graham Norton Laid Bare Since being spotted on Channel 5, Graham Norton's career struck an all time high. He has done 4 series of his incredibly popular TV show, So Graham Norton and is now starting a new show V Graham Norton which promises more of the same. His unique blend of camp comedy, cosy chattiness, and brilliant bitchiness has earned Graham a place in the nation's hearts. But not too much is known about Graham Norton's private life, and so biographer and journalist Alison Bowyer has travelled to his native Ireland, talked to friends and relatives about this irrepressibly likeable man. No matter what anybody thinks, Graham Norton can attract just about any of the big names onto his show for a natter and a laugh at some poor website owner's expense. Warm, witty and camp as Christmas, there is no doubt that Graham Norton will continue to go from strength to strength. B/STE SOUHAMI, Diana- Gertrude and Alice Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Tokas were the talk of pre-war Paris. Photographed by Cecil Beaton and Man Ray, painted by Picasso and written about by Hemingway, they were at the heart of Parisian cultural and literary life. Alice, convinced that Gertrude was a genius, cooked for her, typed her manuscripts and fought to obtain the fame she was convinced Gertrude was due. Alice said Gertrude was the happiest person she had ever known, and was besotted with her for the many years they were together. They were indomitable, charismatic, and wildly eccentric, driving around in 'Auntie', their Ford, with Basket, their cherished poodle. Using letters, memoirs and the published writings of Gertrude and Alice, Diana Souhami has written a brilliant and witty chronicle of one of the happiest marriages in modern literary history. B/ VID VIDAL, Gore- Palimpsest: A Memoir This is a memoir of the first 40 years of Gore Vidal's life, ranging back and forth across a rich history. He spent his childhood in Washington DC, in the household of his grandfather, the blind senator from Oklahoma, T.P. Gore, and in the various domestic situations of his complicated and exasperating mother, Nina. Then come schooldays at St Albans and Exeter; the army; life as a literary wunderkind in New York, London, Rome and Paris in the '40s and '50s; sex in an age of promiscuity; and a campaign for Congress in 1960. His cast includes Tennessee Williams, the Kennedys, Eleanor Roosevelt, Truman Capote, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Christopher Isherwood, Jack Kerouac, Jane and Paul Bowles, Santayana, Anais Nin, Norman Mailer, Leonard Bernstein and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, among others. 37 B/WHI BARBER, Stephen- Edmund White A biography of the most acclaimed gay novelist of his generation--fully authorised by Edmund White himself. Edmund White: The Burning World is the first biography of the novelist whose personal life reflects the course of gay history in America in the last half of the 20th century. Born in Cincinnati in 1940 and raised in Evanston, White arrived in New York City in 1962, tortured by the knowledge of his homosexuality. Working by day as a staff writer for Time-Life, he secretly cruised the West Village past nightfall. To appreciate White's life is to understand the formative years of gay liberation, for White--who was a participant at the original Stonewall event-experienced all of the ecstasy and abandonment that came to characterise this first generation of post-Stonewall gay men. Yet while many gay men of his era took to politics, White himself chose to record the extraordinary social and sexual revolution of which he was a prime participant through literature and novels. Whether writing about Fire Island in Forgetting Elena or about gay social revolution in America in States of Desire, White capture the energy and the emotions of an underground culture which had finally thrown off the shackles of its repression. And in A Boy's Own Summer, White helped to define the coming-out novel as a new gay genre. With complete access to all of White's files and materials, Stephen Barber has created an extraordinary testament to the life of one of America's most respected literary artists. B/WHI WHITE, Edmund- My Lives No one has been more frank, lucid, rueful and entertaining about growing up gay in Middle America than Edmund White. Best known for his autobiographical novels, starting with "A Boy's Own Story", here in his memoir White takes the fiction out of his story and delivers the facts in all their shocking and absorbing verity. From an adolescence in the 1950s, an era which tried to 'cure' homosexuality, but found him 'unsalvageable', he emerged into a 1960s society which re-designated his orientation as 'acceptable (nearly)'. He describes a life touched by psychotherapy in every decade, starting with his flamboyant and demanding therapist mother, who considered him her own personal test case - not to mention her escort to cocktail lounges after her divorce. His father thought that even wearing a wristwatch was effeminate, though custodial visits to Dad in Cincinnati inadvertently initiated White into the culture of 'hustlers and johns' that changed his life. White introduces us to his lovers and predilections - past and present, and on the way gives his striking and eloquent opinions on art, life and other artists. "My Lives" is a spectacular treat: by turns moving and hilarious, outrageous and enlightening. 38 New Non-Fiction just added to stock (May 2006) ANDERS, Charles BAIRD, VanessaBARTLETT, NeilThe Lazy Crossdresser Sex, Love and Homophobia Solo Voices: Monologues 19882004 Transvestism and Cross Dressing: Current Views My Husband Betty: Love, Sex and Life with a Crossdresser True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism Sex Changes: Transgender Politics Don We Now Our Gay Apparel The Bible, The Church and Homosexuality Becoming a Visible Woman Out of the Past: Gay and Lesbian History From 1869 to the Present The New Gay Teenager Miss Vera’s Cross-Dress for Success Queer Theory, Gender Theory The Psychobiology of Sex BLAND, Jed(Editor)- BOYD, Helen- BROWN, Mildred- CALIFIA, Patrick- COLE, ShaunCOULTON, Nicholas(Editor)- GREEN, JamisonMILLER, Neil- SAVIN-WILLIAMS, Ritch CVERA, Veronica- WILCHINS, RikiWILSON, GlennOrientation 39 Blackpool Central Libraries LGBT Social and Reading Group.
