The Pros & Cons Of Desktop Virtualization

Department in Westmoreland
County, Pa., needed to tame
its finances, and so Philip
Svesnik, the county’s chief information
officer, was given a mandate to find sav-
ings in his department. After looking at
a number of options—most too expen-
sive for his budget—he contracted with
Redwood City, Calif.,-based Pano Logic
(www.panologic.com) to replace 750 of
the county’s PCs with desktop virtual-
ization-driven devices.
After combining the virtual desk-
tops with low-power LCD screens,
Westmoreland County is anticipating
a five-year projected savings of more
$500,000, all the while giving county de-
partments the essential hardware, soft-
ware, and technology gear they need to
provide county services.
That’s one example illustrating the
promise of desktop virtualization.
Desktop (or endpoint) virtualization employs
a centralized server to deliver and manage
individual desktops remotely. End users have
full access to their systems, often not even
realizing that they’re running remotely.
Meanwhile, IT staff can provision,
manage, upgrade, and patch employee
systems virtually, instead of having to
do so onsite.
VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure),
by the way, is often used interchange-

Data Deduplication
A Better Storage Option For Larger Companies
Deduplication can occur as data is
flowing between computers or after
the data is written and stored. It has
mostly been deployed so far in sec-
ondary storage systems, partly be-
cause those systems tend to have more
data that’s duplicated, and partly be-

affect performance.
“Deduplication has several po-

says Ed Lee, lead architect at Moun-

machine operating systems. “First, it
can reduce the amount of disk space
used for applications, but this often
comes at significant performance cost
and complexity.”

Essentially, what the revolu-
tion amounts to is the ability for
BBM users to share information
and chat with other BBM users
without having to leave the “BBM-

using. If you recently downloaded
Poynt and are enamored with what

Other possibilities include, say,
chatting about a baseball game

Additionally, your BBM contacts are not
only able to see the activities, achieve-

that display in the list.
Elsewhere, BBM also now lets you use
an unlimited number of characters and
emoticons. You can also simultaneously
share files with numerous contacts via
groups you create, send text messages to
non-BBM friends, and share the music
you’re listening to on your BlackBerry

through the exchange of a PIN or by scan-

ANDROID
➤ Share Apps
If you’re particularly fond of an
app, or if you find an app that’s perfect
for someone you know, the Android
Market makes it easy to share app rec-
ommendations with others through a
variety of communications platforms.
To share an app from the Android
Market, navigate to the app you want
to distribute (the search function is your
friend) and tap the Share icon, which
looks like three dots with two inter-
secting lines and is located at the top of
the screen. The following screen gives
you multiple sharing options, including
Bluetooth, Facebook, Gmail, Email, and
Messaging, as well as the option to share
via other apps, such as Dropbox and
Evernote. Tap your desired method and
then fill out the missing information.
For instance, if you want to share via
email, input the recipient’s email ad-
dress; the subject line will automatically
be filled out for you. The app itself won’t
be shared to the recipient, just a link to
the Android Market, which ensures that
the recipient gets the latest version of the
app regardless of when she checks it out.
➤ Eliminate Redundant
Mail Notifications
If you ever swipe down your noti-
fications bar only to find two or more
email notifications that both refer to the
same new email, then you have a fairly
common problem that’s easy to fix. By
default, Android-based phones come
with a Gmail app and a generic Email
app, so if you set up both of them, you’ll
receive notifications from both applica-
tions. Download and configure any ad-
ditional email apps, and you can easily
fill up your notifications bar with icons.
To get rid of the excessive notifica-
tions, you need to first settle on the
single email application you prefer to
use. You don’t have to uninstall alterna-
tives, but you will need to disable noti-
fications for your secondary email apps.
The instructions for disabling notifica-
tions will vary depending on the app,
but most of them let you configure no-
tifications in the app’s menu. To access

UNIQUE & FLAVORFUL, TENDER BEEF THAT’S BETTER FOR YOU.
Certified Piedmontese Beef
NATURALLY LEAN, NATURALLY TENDER
Certified Piedmontese is healthier than traditional beef. Low in fat, low in cholesterol,
it’s unique: lean and nutritious, but still tender and juicy. It’s not magic and it’s not
artificial, it’s nature at its best: Certified Piedmontese Beef comes from naturally lean
and naturally tender Piedmontese cattle. Originating in the Piedmont region of Italy,
Certified Piedmontese cattle are now naturally raised in the U.S. by family ranchers.
Piedmontese cattle are still relatively rare in the U.S., and that’s part of what makes
Certified Piedmontese unique. Nowhere else will you find beef this lean that’s also this
tender.
BY THE NUMBERS
Just how much healthier is Certified Piedmontese? Studies show that Piedmontese beef
delivers significantly more omega fatty acids than traditional beef, more omega fatty acids
even than skinless chicken breasts. In fact, Certified Piedmontese beef is similar to salmon
in terms of omega fatty acids, but with the delicious taste of juicy Prime beef. Certified
Piedmontese beef also contains significantly less saturated fat than conventional beef and
more polyunsaturated fats—the good kinds of fats—than typical USDA samples. And
calories? Piedmontese beef not only has fewer calories than conventional beef—it actually
has fewer calories than roasted chicken.
NATURAL FOODS, NATURALLY RAISED
Certified Piedmontese cattle are humanely raised, and are never given additives or
steroids. Simply put, raising good, healthy food doesn’t require drugs and additives. What
cattle need are fresh air, clean water, good food, room to range, and humane treatment—
and with Certified Piedmontese Beef, that’s what they get.
