As a history buff, I have a great interest in the Industrial Revolution, the period of time from
approximately 1750 to 1850 where technological innovation had a major impact on various
industrial and agricultural processes. Here are a few notable events that occurred during this
time:

1. The spinning jenny was invented in 1764, by James Hargreaves; this facilitated the process of
making clothing.

2. The first practical steam engine was manufactured in 1775, followed by the first steam-
powered mills in 1779.

3. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793, which hastened the process of separating cotton
fibers from the seeds.

4. In 1822, an American named William Church patented the world’s first typesetting machine.

5. The first practical submarine telegraph cable was constructed beneath the English Channel,
successfully connecting Dover, England to Calais, France.
