SharePoint 2013 Includes Mobile features
Microsoft has recently released SharePoint 2013 worldwide with much new
As mobile technology is much popular and in demand nowadays, Microsoft has
integrated many new Mobility features in its recent SharePoint 2013 version release.
Most of the enterprises have adopted mobility in their work processes and so the
necessity of SharePoint supporting smartphones and tablet devices is increased.
The four most important enhancements done in SharePoint 2013 are discussed below –
Mobile Browser Experience with SharePoint 2013
SharePoint 2013 provides an optimized mobile browser experience with the introduction
of new contemporary view. It also offers a new full screen UI view enabling users to see
a full desktop view of a SharePoint based website on the smartphones.
The new Contemporary view is lightweight that helps to easily navigate and access
document libraries, lists, wikis, and web parts. This new view for smartphones is
supported by Android 4.0 version or higher, iOS 4.0 or higher and Windows 7.5 or
New Push Notification Feature integration
SharePoint 2013 now supports the mobile apps that aid users to receive notifications
from a SharePoint based website. Any events happening on the SharePoint site is
notified on the mobile device with this new Push notification feature.
To start receiving notifications, one time registration with the website is required by
mobile device apps. After registration, the Push notification service can be started by
which mobile users receive notifications directly from the server where the app is
hosted for the registered mobile device app. Also, it is important that the Push
Notification feature is activated on the site which can be done by going in Site Settings
-> Site Actions -> Manage site features.
Due to increasing use of mobile devices running on multiple mobile OS’s, it has become
necessary that the SharePoint site is optimized for readability and ease of use on all
mobile devices. With Device channels integrated in SharePoint 2013, mobile users can
deliver a single website in multiple views by using different preferable designs that
target different devices based on their user agent string.
SharePoint 2013 now supports new Geolocation field type that can be used in a list
particularly for mobile application development. Now, it is possible to create lists
“location aware” and display latitude and longitude coordinates via Bing Maps.
Other than these, SharePoint 2013 provides better tools that are useful for building
enhanced customized mobile applications. Microsoft has included all useful mobile
related features in SharePoint 2013 making it a mobile-friendly platform.
