Feast of Christ the King November 25, 2012
Notes From Your Pastor:
Feast of Christ the King: Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Feast of Christ the King. It is the
last week of the Liturgical Calendar year. The solemnity of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925. It celebrates
an aspect of Jesus’ identity rather than an event in his life, and is thus classed among the “idea feasts” (another example would be
Holy Family Sunday). Originally celebrated in October, it was moved to the last Sunday in Ordinary Time, in the 1960s. It cele-
brates Christ’s reign over all things, a theme definitely sounded in the solemnity of the Ascension. By instituting the feast of Christ
the King, Blessed Pius XI hoped to renew the faith of the people, which had suffered from the secularism and atheism of his day.
He wrote on this occasion: “People are instructed in the truths of faith, and brought to appreciate the inner joys of religion far more
effectively by the annual celebration of our sacred mysteries than by any pronouncement, however weighty, of the teaching of the
Church. Such pronouncements usually reach only a few and the more learned among the faithful; feasts reach them all; the former
speak but once, the latter speak every year—in fact, forever.”
Missalettes: The missalettes we have used this year were for the whole year as opposed to seasonally. With the
coming of Advent it is time to replace the present missalettes. We would like to begin doing this on Tuesday, November 27 after
the 8:15am Mass. Anyone who would be able to help, whether you attend Mass or not, we will begin changing these books out
about 8:45am and go as long as everyone has the time. If we have many volunteers we could get this accomplished in one day. The
old saying “many hands make for light work.”
Scrip Sales: Especially with the holidays approaching have you considered purchasing Scrip Certificates from
the Parish? In case you are not aware, every certificate you purchase earns some cash for the parish. It varies but every little bit
helps. Remember there are certificates for groceries and also for many different retail and restaurant establishments. These can be
used for your own individual purchases and/or as gifts. In the last couple of months our sales have dropped considerably and we
would like to pick them up and if at all possible increase the amount of sales. So your support of this program is greatly appreciated,
not only at this time of the year but throughout the entire year. These certificates are available in church after all the Masses on
weekends and at the rectory during the week. The rectory office hours for selling Scrip are from 8am to 8pm, Monday through Fri-
day and 9am to 4pm on Saturday. Scrip certificates make great Christmas Gifts!!
Thanksgiving and Advent: We just celebrated Thanksgiving which is shortly before Advent, but
since it is not really a church feast day and is not universal to all countries, it sort of pops in unconnected to the rest of the liturgical
year. The focus on Thanksgiving is on gratitude. Can we retain that focus and make it our focus during Advent as well? It would
seem to make a good preparation for Christmas to be able to bring a grateful heart to the celebrations of that feast.
Take the Time to Plan for Advent: Next weekend we begin the Season of Advent. We know
that Advent is the season of preparation for Christmas. Every year we use the time, both liturgically and in our homes, for this
preparation. Maybe if we start planning a little earlier this year we can make the season relate more to the deeper meaning of Christ-
mas. I am talking about doing the same things that we usually do to get ready for the holiday but to do them with more intention.
For example, most families send Christmas cards. (Although the post office is losing business the rest of the year, this is apparently
not so when it comes to Christmas cards.) Is there something you can do with your children to make this ritual more personal, more
an expression of care from all the members of the family? Can the children sign a personal note on the card (at least to the people
they know)? Could they make something like a bookmark or something decorative to insert into the card that will express their own
"Merry Christmas" to the recipients? Can this include their own personal prayer for these people? Many times there is someone that
the family has fallen out of touch with, or maybe even out of favor with. Is an apology or forgiveness in order? This annual ritual of
reaching out to friends and relatives near and far with Christmas cards may be a perfect vehicle to accomplish this. Another way to
expand this into a ministry is to include sick or shut-in members of the parish or residents at a nursing home or senior housing facil-
ity. A sincere promise of prayer for these folks can be touching for them and formative for the children. The family can pray to-
gether for these people’s intentions during prayers at bedtime, or include it at grace before meals or during the Advent Wreath
prayer time. Another part of our preparation ritual includes decorating our house. Is there an older neighbor who can use assistance
with decorating? Might bringing handmade decorations or even a poinsettia brighten their residence? This might work for those
senior housing facility or nursing home residents as well. Perhaps your family can “adopt” someone for the season, possibly bring-
ing them to Mass on Sunday if they need a ride, or even bringing them home or out to a coffee shop for brunch after Mass.
On Retreat: This afternoon I leave for Retreat out of town and will return late Friday. I will pray for all of you
and I ask that you remember me in your prayers as well.
Birthdays: Father John celebrates his birthday on Sunday, November 25th.
