					Georgia Performance Standard: SS3G2: The student will describe the cultural and geographic systems associated with the historical figures in SS3H2a. c. Describe how each of these historical figures adapted to and was influenced by his/her environment. a. Describe how regions in which these historical figures lived affected their lives and had an impact on their cultural identification. Primary Focus of Lesson: This lesson is designed to help students understand how Frederick Douglass life was affected due to the region in which he lived and how he adapted to his environment. Grade Level: Third Length of Lesson: 30 minutes Lesson Objective: The student will be able to describe how the region in which Frederick Douglass live affected him and how he adapted to his environment. Essential Question: How did the region in which Frederick Douglass live affect him? How did Frederick Douglass adapt to his environment? Assessment of Objective: The students will do a five minute quick write explain the obstacle Frederick Douglass overcame due to the location in which he lived. Introduction: The teacher will give students examples scenarios of how they would adapt if different things were going on in the region in which we live. Teaching Procedures: 1. The teacher will describe some things that were going on in the region where Frederick Douglass lived. 2. The teacher will describe how Frederick Douglass moved from different slave owners. 3. The teacher will describe how Frederick Douglass to read. 4. The teacher will describe how Frederick Douglass gained his freedom. 5. The teacher will describe how Douglass started teaching others to read. Closure and/or Summarizing Strategies: The students will get with a partner and they will take turns explaining to each other how Frederick Douglass was affected by the region in which he lived and how he adapted to his environment.
