Statement by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the
announced formal launch of peace talks with the FARC in Colombia

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice
President of the Commission issued the following statement today:

“I express my great satisfaction that the Government of Colombia and the FARC will engage in
talks aimed at ending the long-standing conflict in the country. There is now a unique window of
opportunity to put an end to this decades-old confrontation which has held back development and
inflicted unspeakable suffering on the Colombian people.

The violence must end; the FARC should seize this moment to take responsibility and prove its
sincerity by ceasing its attacks and violations of international humanitarian law. This chance to
build peace and bring security and prosperity to all Colombians must not be squandered.”
