					Understanding Osgood-Schlatter Disease
Adolescents are sometimes disappointed in their athletic dreams to find out they have developed
Osgood-Schlatter Disease. It’s a disease that no one seems to have ever heard of before, and yet doctors
know it as a common problem amongst youth.

What is Osgood-Schlatter Disease
The disease was named after two surgeons, credited with the first discoveries and descriptions of the
disease. Robert Bayley Osgood lived from the early 1870’s until the mid-1900’s.

He was the chief of staff at the Children’s Hospital at Massachusetts General Hospital for a while and
spent some time teaching orthopedic surgery at Harvard. His counterpart, Carl B. Schlatter, was credited
for describing the condition in 1903 without any prior
                                               exposure to Osgood’s research.

Their combined expertise brought about the name Osgood-
Schlatter Disease. Even with that fascinating tidbit of
information, why is it that no one has ever heard of it, how
do you get it and what does it do to a person?

Last thing’s first, you should know what it does to a youth
that has it. It symptoms are credited as knee pain, swelling
                                             and tender skin.

Those suffering from it experience pain every time they change elevation. Going up and down stairs is
particularly painful.

A protrusion can often be seen just below the knee cap that is extremely tender to the touch. The pain
can last as long as a year and symptoms can be continue to be felt later in life.

The short-term consequences include immediate cessation of almost any physical activities and
discomfort when walking around graded hills. Although this can be discouraging for youth, at least they
can still walk independently of help from crutches.

Getting Osgood-Schlatter Disease Diagnosed by a Knee Doctor
For Utah residents near the capital, Osgood-Schlatter Disease is best diagnosed by a knee doctor around
Salt Lake. These professionals have seen it enough to know the condition when they see it, even if you
have never heard of it before.

Adolescents get the disease from overuse of the body during periods of spurted growth. The tendon
between the shin and the kneecap is busy trying to grow long and remain strong, while kids are
overusing them to the extreme.
This tendon can only take so much before it becomes inflamed. Once inflamed, it takes a lot of rest and
icing to get it back to normal, but it will return to full usability with time.

And finally, practically no one has heard of this disease because,
although it is common, it is not nearly common enough for the
household. A knee doctor in Salt Lake City will have heard of it
because it is common in the medical community.

Anyone with a medical degree will likely have heard of it and anyone
that works as a knee doctor will know it because of his wide
clientele base. Although you may not know it, your neighbor’s kid
could be experiencing the same symptoms as yours.

You just wouldn’t know it because they don’t come to you for help on it. They do go to the knee doctor
in Salt Lake for help every time.
