Symantec Virtualization Solutions for Backup and Data Protection Jim Keeley, Symantec Sr. SE Sun CEC 2008 Agenda 1 2 3 Sun & Symantec Partnership Overview Review of Virtualization and Data Protection NBU, PureDisk and Virtual Environment Backup Backup Exec and Virtual Environment Backup 4 5 Wrap up and Q/A Agenda 1 2 3 Sun & Symantec Partnership Overview Review of Virtualization and Data Protection NBU, PureDisk and Virtual Environment Backup Backup Exec and Virtual Environment Backup 4 5 Wrap up and Q/A SUN Symantec Partnership • Relationship for 15 years with what was Veritas and Now Symantec • History started relationship with Veritas File System/Volume Manger and NetBackup Solutions…in fact we have had… • Contracts in place for 13 years (2 contracts..)‫‏‬ – OEM - Sun price listed NBU (Any OS) & SF (Solaris) • • SUN support these levels 1-3 More than three quarters of a billion dollars of license and support royalties since contract signed in ’1997 – Reseller – ANY Symantec product on ANY OS • Did you know that SYMC drove >$700M/yr. in Sun IP in FY08? • Sun is the primary development platform for all Symantec Solutions that run on the “Unix” platforms • More than 50% of all our Storage Foundation UNIX licenses are on Sun Solaris • More than 80% of Sun high end enterprise server customers also buy and install Storage Foundation • Sun has over one hundred thousand service and support contracts on NetBackup and Storage Foundation • Sun sells and supports more NBU & SF licenses than any other Symantec Partner Agenda 1 2 3 Sun & Symantec Partnership Overview Review of Virtualization and Data Protection NBU, PureDisk and Virtual Environment Backup Backup Exec and Virtual Environment Backup 4 5 Wrap up and Q/A Smart Companies Virtualize Virtualizing your data center brings many benefits… …Financial: Save money by consolidating servers …Administrative: Deploy new servers more easily …Agility: Make your servers move across your hardware …Flexibility: Your hardware selection becomes less critical …Disaster Recovery: Quickly restore to different locations and hardware when needed Challenges of the Virtualized Data Center But new backup challenges are introduced with VMware deployments because: – Proliferation‫‏‬of‫‏‬servers‫“(‏‬VM‫‏‬sprawl”)‫‏‬makes‫‏‬backup‫‏‬ configuration more time-consuming – VM sprawl increases storage requirements – New‫“‏‬proxy‫‏‬servers”‫‏‬and‫‏‬the‫‏‬movement‫‏‬of‫‏‬VMs‫‏‬across‫‏‬ hardware increases backup and restore complexity – Backup processing is very I/O and CPU intensive, and simultaneous backups in multiple VMs can overload the ESX server Advantages Due to Virtualization Although virtualization brings new data protection challenges, it also brings new capabilities: – VMware snapshotting technology‫“(‏‬VCB”)‫‏‬enables‫‏‬ high-performance off-host backup – DR can easily occur to different hardware in different locations P V V V + • 8+ year mutual interoperability and integration testing relationship including cooperative support for customers • Joint solutions across NetBackup, Backup Exec, Storage Foundation, VCS, Enterprise Security Manager, Altiris, and Endpoint Protection The relationship delivers results: 9 Not all VMs are Created Equal Typical Virtual Machine Types: Mission-Critical VMs Departmental Application VMs File/Print VMs Commodity Server VMs Remote Office VMs • Unique Server Image Large data sets SAN/NAS attached App integration • Unique Server Image Outside datacenter Local storage • Standard image Large data sets Granular recovery Backup: On-host (client) or off-host Storage: Direct-attached or SAN/NAS Protection: Data, VM, or VM + data Location: Static‫‏‬or‫“‏‬mobile”‫‏‬VMs • Recovery: VM, files, application, all DR: Local or remote recovery Vaulting: Replication or tape shipping • • • • • Agenda 1 2 3 Sun & Symantec Partnership Overview Review of Virtualization and Data Protection NBU, PureDisk and Virtual Environment On-host Backup Overview • NBU or PureDisk client in virtual machine – Within a VM, NBU supports any standard client or agent in OS, DB, Cluster compatibility lists – Objective: Blanket support for physical configuration in VM – Used in non-shared storage environments – Advantages: • Simple implementation • Single file backups • DB and application backups are supported • Restore files, appplications directly to VM • Support for advanced NBU technologies (synthetic backups) • PureDisk: Dedup data across VMs On-host Backup Overview • NBU or PureDisk client in virtual machine – Restrictions: • Entire VM (at OS level) restores are more complex • Full VM (vmdk) restores not supported • Backup processing load on one VM will negatively impact performance on entire physical server • VM must be powered on for backup processing to occur Off-host Backup Overview • NBU client inside VMware Service Console – Considered off-host since no NetBackup client (NBU or PureDisk) runs inside the VM – Used in non-shared storage environments – Advantages: • • • • • Simple implementation Entire VM backups are supported (vmdk files) Entire VM restores are supported Service Console OS can be backed up Supports both LAN and SAN implementations Off-host Backup Overview • NBU client inside VMware Service Console – Restrictions: • Single (OS level) file restores cannot be performed directly from NBU console • DB, application backups and restores are not supported • Script creation and maintenance are likely if consistent backups of live VMs are required • Backup processing load on one VM will negatively impact performance on entire physical server Off-host Backup Overview • NBU for VMware Integrated with VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) – Low backup impact for highly utilized ESX servers in a shared storage environment – Advantages: • Two restores from a single backup: – Single file and entire VM (vmdk level) restores – Single pass backup using NBU FlashBackup (patented) • Integration with VMware Converter technology simplifies VM restores • Backup impact to all VMs is minimized • Configuration is Distributed Resource Scheduling (DRS) and VMotion aware Off-host Backup Overview • NBU for VMware Integrated with VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) – Restrictions: • Requires shared SAN or iSCSI environment • Requires a separate Win 2003 Proxy Server • Live (hot) DB and application backups require additional pre- and post-backup processing to ensure data consistency • Dedup of vmdk files through PureDisk Deduplication Option (PDDO) not recommended at this time How does NetBackup leverage VCB? • If‫‏‬we‫‏‬leverage‫‏‬just‫‏‬what‫‏‬VCB‫‏‬provides… – One policy for off-host backup of VMDK image files (VM DR) – Another policy for off-host backup of VM user files (i.e. D: drive) • By‫‏‬layering‫‏‬FlashBackup‫‏‬on‫‏‬top‫‏‬of‫‏‬VCB… – Single FlashBackup policy for off-host backup of VMDK image files – Granular file-level restore from VMDK images • Integrated Policy Setup – Wizard simplifies policy setup – Integrated VM discovery for policy setup • Integrated Recovery – Integrates with VMware Convertor for VM recovery VCB Backups and Granular Recovery File Recovery 1 Image Recovery VMDK Backup policy alerts NetBackup that it is time to do a virtual machine backup NetBackup instructs VMware to snapshot the virtual machine 2 3 4 5 VMware ESX Backup traffic travels on the abundant SAN, not the constrained LAN • Competitive solutions require backup to run inside VMs, thereby reducing performance of the ESX Server LAN bandwidth becomes a key chokepoint • • • Performance hit is isolated to the dedicated backup server NBU and VCB: License Cost and Tracking NetBackup with VCB Backup Server and Storage Alternatives Backup Server and Storage C
