What legal form of business will you operate under? corporation sole proprietorship partnership Who are the key people involved? What are their professional and educational backgrounds? Where are you operating or proposing to operate from? How does the location impact business operations? History - How did you get here? Why did you choose this business? Section 2: Market Analysis The Market Describe the market for your goods or services. Spending habits Estimate in dollars the total spent within your market area for your product or service. Project your market share percentage in 1 year, 3 years and 5 years. Growth Is the market expanding or contracting and at what rate? Change How is the market changing, and define the characteristics that are changing? Who will buy? What are the individual customer characteristics? (i.e. age, income level, education) Where are your customers? Are they located in a particular region or area? Why will your product or service be purchased? Will it meet a feature or benefit need? Seasonality Is the market for your product and service influenced by the seasons of the year? If so, how? Yes No Customer Expectations How will you price your product? What is the expectation for quality, service, design, delivery or other features? Section 3: Competition Competition Evaluation How many companies are you competing against? List names, location and how long have they been in business. Distribution How do they distribute the product or service? Competition Strategies What are their strengths and weaknesses in marketing, operations and finance, what are their strategies? Comparisons How does your product compare in terms of price, quality, service, design, delivery or other features? Section 4: Product or Service Advantages Product Description List key features of your product or service and its benefits to potential customers. How are you distinguished from your competition? Proprietary Position Describe the patent, copyright or other contractual or design exclusivity or means of protecting your product or service. Other Barriers to Competition Describe any circumstances that would discourage others from entering the market. Regulatory Requirements Describe any pending or proposed rules or legislation that may affect your product or service or the technology process behind it (ie APA, EPA, FDA). Product Extension Describe any future improvements, developments or directions to meet the changing needs or your market. Section 5: Marketing Strategy Marketing Plan Describe your overall marketing and sales strategy including how you plan to attract and retain customers. Advertising and Promotion Plans Describe your plans and budgets for advertising and promotions. Pricing Describe how your price will relate to the cost of your product or service, as well as the cost of marketing and promotional efforts. How does your price compare to your competition's and is the difference worth it? Section 6: Operations Location and Space Where will your business be located? How much space do you need? What will it cost? Will you rent or own this space? Anything unique or special about this space? Equipment Requirements What type of equipment do you need? How much will it cost? Is there any special training necessary? Personnel Requirements How many employees do you need and what skills/experience do they need? After 1 year? 3 years? 5 years? What are the prevailing wages? Are the people available? Section 7: Organization and Management Key Players Identify who will be in your business and their tasks/responsibilities. What experience are you brining into the business, how does your background relate to the business? (Include a copy of your resume) Who is your lawyer? Who is your accountant? Board of Directors/Trustees If forming a corporation, list all board members and advisors. Insurance What insurance will you need and the cost related to it? Section 8: Financial Plan Operational Budget Provide a monthly budget for the first year. Provide a contingency (what if) plan. If you are looking for a loan, state an exact dollar amount you want to borrow for the business, and how the money will be used. Cash Flow Projections Use monthly “best guesses” if a start-up business or based on actual figures if existing business. (This Excel form is on our web site and can be downloaded).
