1) Picaresque novel(流浪汉小说)
a chronicle, usually autobiographical, presenting of the life story of the adventures of a rascal of low degree, who makes a living more by his wits than by his hard work, such as Defoe’s Jonathan Wild the Great, Dickens’s Pickwick Papers, Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn.
2) Epistolary novel(书信小说):
the narrative in the novel is carried forward by letters written by one or more of the characters, such as Samuel Richardson’s Pamela and Clarissa, Alice Walker’s The Color Purple.
3) Sentimental novel(伤感小说):
an overindulgence (over enjoyment) in emotion, especially the conscious effort to induce (诱使,产生) emotion in order to enjoy it, and an overemphasis on the goodness of humanity, such as Goldsmith’s The Vicar of Wakefield, Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy.
4)Pastoral novel(田园小说):
fiction that presents rural life as an pleasant condition, such as D. H. Lawrence’s Rainbow and Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
5)Historical novel :
a detail reconstruction of a personage, a movement, a series of events, or the spirit of an age in the past that is based on facts, such as Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Thackeray’s Esmond.
6) Psychological novel:
a special emphasis upon interior characterization, an interpretation of ―the invisible life‖, such as George Eliot’s Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner, Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.
7) Stream-of-consciousness novel:
using interior monologue to covey the internal experience of the character so as to produce an effect as if the reader were overhearing an expression of the stream of thought and feeling flowing through the character’s mind, such as James Joyce’s Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, Virginia Woolf’s The Waves, William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury.
8) Apprenticeship novel:
about a young man’s bringing-up and education, about his discovery of the meaning of life or his knowledge of the world, such as Dickens’s Great Expectations and J. D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye.
