Homecoming Reunion
Our last reunion was held on Friday evening, Oct 5. There will be no more plans for a separate alumni
reunion going forward. We feel that there is a lack of interest in such events, based on dwindling
attendance and conflicting schedules. There may be special events in the future.
Spotlight
Rex Bradford Galloway ’86 has joined RE/MAX Realty Professionals in Greenville, SC. He was formerly
with IMI Resort Holdings as Vice President of Administration. He writes “I grew up around the real estate
business and have been actively involved in it as a full-time broker since 1987.
The first half of my career, I focused mainly on general residential with
investment & commercial experience in the Upstate of SC (primarily in the
Greenville market). During the 2nd half, my focus has been on the
luxury/lifestyle side of the industry. I have typically engaged in upper-tier
price range developments that are highly amenitized and located in vacation-
destination/resort/2nd home markets within various regions of North
America and the Caribbean. My role in these projects varies from sales
administration to operations to brokerage management, but always with
maximum SALES RESULTS as the primary goal. Serving the primary, my
secondary goal with having a presence on Linked-In is to stay absolutely on

Reid A Doherty ’06 is a Staff Geologist with Bunnell Lammons Engineering, Inc in Greenville. He writes:
“In the office I perform tasks ranging from inputting field data into computer logs to developing and
finalizing project reports. I work closely with senior project managers to assure that projects are
completed in a timely and orderly fashion, while maintaining a suitable budget. In the field, I perform
and oversee various field operations to insure compliance with required guidelines. While in the field, my
duties consist of logging and obtaining specific project-related data, testing, overseeing drilling and a
variety of other on-site operations, and insuring proper communication occurs from our team to clients
and related officials. Types of clients include: Petroleum Distribution Sites, SCDHEC Compliance, Local
Convenience/Retail Stores, Solid Waste Landfills, Private Developments, and Drycleaner Sites.

Don H Shirley ’79, is the founding partner of Foundation Medical in Columbia. He boasts
more than 28 years experience in the medical device industry. Don sells the value of high
cost, high margin equipment to the acute care hospital market in the United States and
Canada. His past responsibilities have included sales and training roles with Johnson &
Johnson, various senior level sales roles with American Medical Systems and more than 20
years of sales and sales management experience with Hill-Rom, culminating in a senior vice president
role overseeing all North American sales. Don is a skilled negotiator with experience working with Group
Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs), health care facilities and health
systems. He provides direction and leadership in the marketing and sales of products encompassing
acute care, critical care, patient room environments and outpatient surgery centers. Reach Don at

Jack S Graybill ’49, is retired from the securities business, having served as manager for Atlanta-based
Robinson-Humphrey before its acquisition by Salomon Smith Barney. The Darla Moore
School of Business honored Graybill with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1986, at which
time he was first vice president and a financial consultant for Robison-
Humphrey/American Express Co. Inc.Now in his 80s, Graybill did not retire until age 75..
He was a member of the Carolina Securities Dealers Association and the National Traders
Association, USC’s Alumni Council, Scholarship Screening Committee and National
Advisory Council to the President, and was president of Educational Foundation. Graybill is on the board
of USC’s Medical School Foundation, served as president of the University Associates and is a lifetime
trustee of USC Educational Foundation. Jack also served on boards of the Salvation Army, Associated
Services, and United Fund. He is former president of Foundation Board of Providence Hospital. Jack and

C Jackie Seawell ’65, is a golf teaching pro at the Hounds Lake Country Club in Aiken. He is former
director of golf at Sage Valley Golf Club in Graniteville. Jackie was inducted into the SC Golf Hall of Fame
in 1998, and won the 2010 Hitchcock/Whitney Award, given to someone who has positively impacted
golf in Aiken. He was also Club Corporation of America Golf Professional of the Year in 1996. Some of his
former students include: Corbin Mills (2011 U. S. Amateur Public Links champion), Kevin Kisner, Alex
Hamilton and Matt Hendrix. Jackie is married to Claire, and has 4 children: Jay IV, Daniel, Julianna Allen,
and David. David is an SAE from Carolina Class of ’96 and an Aiken realtor with Woodside Development.

William C Keating ’91 is Vice President of Sales, Digital Media with the Golf Channel.
He joined in 2008 with the responsibility for driving digital sales revenue and
partnerships across the two primary categories of the network's endemic and non
endemic advertisers. He is a aales veteran with national experience in both digital
and print media. One of his specialties is as a cross platform integration specialist.
Bill has served as an account manager with Golf Magazine and Time Inc/Teen
Magazine, regional account manager for ESPN, regional manager for Broadband
Sports, and district manager for INFOSEEK/Go Network. Originally from Darien, CT, Bill attended Darien
High School and graduated from Carolina with an English degree.
Jonathan Lee Goodburn ’93, is chief financial officer for Lauth Property Group in Carmel, Indiana. Jon
has overall responsibility for all financial reporting, accounting and budgeting in addition to human
resources and information technology for all of Lauth’s operating and real estate holding companies.
Prior to joining Lauth, Jon was a Senior Manager with Ernst & Young where he spent 12 years providing
audit and merger/acquisition due diligence services to clients with emphasis on real estate. At Ernst &
Young his clients included the largest retail REIT and office REIT where he was involved in an Initial
Public Offering.
Jay Stegner ’07, is now an attorney with his family’s company, The Stegner Law Firm in
Camden, SC. Jay graduated from law school at Appalachian State University in May 2012 and
recently passed the SC bar exam. He majored in political science and graphic design at Carolina.

Dominic Marrone, ’12, has joined the Bank of America in Charlotte as a Senior Operations Consultant.

Ben Shand ‘06 is a Practice Manager at Becker Consulting. Ben’s activities include
development of project proposals and budgets, coordination and resourcing of cGMP
audits and Consent Decree remediation projects, composition of audit plans and reports,
and preparation of QSR and FDA inspection readiness training materials.. Ben previously
worked as a Program Management Analyst for Science Applications International
Corporation (SAIC) in Frederick, Maryland. He has interned for Team Consulting in Cambridge, United

Carl Stephen Taylor ’79, is Broker in Charge at Preferred Properties in Columbia. Steve has a wealth of
experience in construction management, association management, apartment management and real
estate sales. He is the past president of the Columbia Apartment Association, is a CPM, a member of
IREM (Institute of Real Estate Management) and CAI (Community Associations Institute).Married to

Mark R Cantey, ’82, recently joined the Inventors Digest in Charlotte as Vice President and Associate
Publisher where he is running the Day to Day operations of the Number 1 selling inventors publication.
Mark originally founded MRC Publishing in April 2006. With over 15 years in the publishing & custom
publishing industry, he established himself as a leader in his field. His background included an annual
450 page preseason NASCAR magazine (with ad sales over 1 million dollars per issue), annual ACC
Basketball magazine, annual NASCAR coffee table book, various custom driver and track specific books --

Chapter News – Eminent Archon Report
Two members of the Chapter were elected to the Interfraternity Council (IFC) at Carolina. Brennan Lyles
(Fall 2012 Pledge Class) is Assistant Vice President of Recruitment and Alex Spears (Fall 2011 Pledge
Class)) is Vice President of Scholarship.
The chapter completed a total of over 750 community service hours for various organizations including
our main philanthropy Balefire. We were also able to raise $4,000 in cooperation with ZTA to allow them
to air a Public Service Announcement on Fox Columbia that features some of our members.
The chapter GPA is above a 3.0 cumulative average for the first time in quite a few years. We expect that
to be even higher when grades come out for the fall semester. We are looking for to recruit 15 for the
spring class

Chapter Eternal
Dr. Joseph Sam ’46, 86, retired Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice Chancellor
for Research at the University of Mississippi, died Saturday, October 3, 2009 at his home in
Oxford. Born in Gary, Indiana, Dr. Sam served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy
during World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Rotary Club. He
was former chairman of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Mississippi, a member of
Rho Chi, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Phi Kappa Phi. He worked as a Senior Scientist for E.I.
Depont, Research Chemist for McNeil Laboratories, Research Group Leader of Bristol
Myers and Fulbright Lecturer at Cairo University. In 1968, Dr. Sam received the Research Achievement
Award in Pharmaceutical Medicinal Chemistry from the American Pharmaceutical Association. The
Department of Medicinal Chemistry at UMISS honored its former department chair, the late Joseph
Sam, by establishing an alumni award in his name. The Joseph Sam Distinguished Alumni in Medicinal
Chemistry Award was established at the School of Pharmacy to recognize the longtime department
chair, Graduate School dean and associate vice chancellor for research.

Ross Early ‘00
Captain Ross Early has formed a new business in Islamorada, FL - an offshore
fishing charter with his boat, named “Earlybird”. Earlybird is a 43’ Alex Willis
custom Carolina sport fishing boat. Earlybird is docked at Holiday Isle Marina
at The Postcard Inn at mile marker 84 oceanside, in the sport fishing capital
of the world. Captain Early will be running full day, ¾ day and half day, and
swordfishing charters out of the marina. Captain Early purchased the boat
in Charleston, SC where it was running charters there under the name
GameDay. Captain Early is a United States Coast Guard Certified Licensed
Captain. Ross has been living and working in Islamorada for the past four
years working as a mate for many of the local captains at Holiday Isle, Whale
Harbor, and Robbie’s
Marinas. Ross spent the
past three summers
working as a salmon and halibut charter captain in
Southeast Alaska. He grew up in Bamberg, South
Carolina where he spent most of his time fishing and
