                                    Colleges Against Cancer
                           McNeese State University’s first Relay For Life

Whereas, Colleges Against Cancer is a nationwide collaboration of college students, faculty, and
staff dedicated to eliminating cancer by initiating and supporting programs of the American Cancer
Society. The mission of the organization is to impact the McNeese campus and Lake Charles
community through four strategic directions of advocacy, cancer education, Relay For Life, and
survivor and caregiver engagement;

Whereas, Colleges Against Cancer works closely with students to raise awareness and funds for
cancer research;

Whereas, Colleges Against Cancer requires a $10 fee from its members. Revenue from fundraising
activities is used to run social events throughout the semester. Social events that are held on campus
throughout the semesters are free to college students. Relay For Life is the one event on campus that
requires students to pay. Students do not pay to attend the event. Students pay for food, drinks, and
other miscellaneous items that are sold to raise money for the American Cancer Society, not
Colleges Against Cancer;

Whereas, Relay For Life is a global movement that is leading the fight to end cancer. Relay For Life
is a community event where local organizations and businesses use their creativity and passion to
relay for 12 hours. Relaying means raising money to fund cancer research, and providing the
community with hope to support and encourage cancer victims, cancer survivors, and the caregivers.
Lake Charles, Louisiana will host its next Relay For Life at 6:00 PM on Friday, May 17, 2013, and it
will end at 6:00 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Colleges Against Cancer is excited to introduce this
global movement to McNeese State University as an annual event to help our community end the
fight against cancer. Our first Relay For Life will be held in the quad of McNeese at 6:00 PM on
Friday, April 12, 2013. The relay will end at 6:00 AM on Saturday, April 13, 2013. The financial
support received from the Organization Assessment Fund is to help Colleges Against Cancer with
the cost of the entertainment activities throughout the 12-hour event; which will help ensure that
students stay all night;

Whereas, the appropriate cost for Relay For Life for approximately 2500 students is $2,000;

Be It Therefore Resolved, the sum of $1,000 be appropriated from the Organization Assessment
Fund to defer the cost of Colleges Against Cancer's first ever Relay For Life of McNeese State
