Alcohol and drug abuse is quite rampant in United States with the United States Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention or CDC officially labeling prescription drug abuse a national
epidemic for the year-2011-12. Drug overdose has raised five fold over the last decade and
an overdose from prescription drugs now exceed those from cocaine and heroin combined.
There are also startling statistics revealed by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
in its report that was released in 2010. The report states that 33 per cent of drivers involved
in fatal car crashes were under the influence of drugs as per the known test results. This
figure is inclusive of both prescription medicines and illicit drugs.

These facts lay emphasis about the impending dual health crisis arising out of drug abuse
and issues arising out of drug rehab treatment. There is also an equivalent increase in the
alcohol consumption or abuse with almost 50 percent of people aged 12 and above having
consumed alcohol in the United States. Majority of the people are able to consume alcohol
responsibly. However, the drug information from the American Council for Drug Education –
ACDE stating that approximately 10 to 15 million people in the United States can be
classified as alcoholics. Out of which 4.5 million of those people are adolescents.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 79,000 deaths per year are the result of
excessive alcohol consumption. Alcohol abuse is the rated as the third leading cause of
death (life-style related) in the nation and the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to
24 years. Various alcohol and drug rehab treatment centers are spread everywhere in all
the states of United States where different alcohol and drug abuse treatment procedures are
followed to help the patient or drug addict from coming out of alcohol and drug abuse.

The alcohol and drug rehab treatment procedure consists of both an inpatient as well as
outpatient treatment. The average cost of outpatient and inpatient treatment as per the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) costs around $1,422
and $3840 per course respectively. The treatment facilities available in these various drug
and rehab centers differs with the patient paying more or less as treatment charges or fee
depending upon the facilities being provided in these centers. The prevention and treatment
efforts benefits patients undergoing treatment at these centers.
