THE SAG AWARDS UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE & AUDIENCE APPEAL
The SAG Awards ceremony takes place in an intimate dinner setting. Actors get up between
acts and chat with one another. The Guild seats casts of the films next to TV casts and
everyone gets to visit together
Evening is a fast and fun two hours
o Surprises -- which actors will tell their “stories” during the show’s opening sequence
o Emotion and humor – we never know what the actors will say or do onstage during
their acceptance speeches.
o No host – each award or film sequence is ‘hosted’ by its presenters
Dick Van Dyke will present Mary Tyler Moore with SAG’s 48th Life Achievement Award, the
Guild’s highest honor, for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. It’s
presented annually to an actor who fosters the “finest ideals of the acting profession.”
Jessica Chastain will introduce a film salute to SAG's regional branches, spotlighting
memorable moments created by actors who live and work across the nation.

Two additional SAG Honors were instituted in 2008 for Outstanding Action Performances by
Television and Film Stunt Ensembles. These non-televised awards will be announced from
the SAG Awards Red Carpet during the live tnt.tv, tbs.com, and People.com pre-show
webcasts which begin at 6 p.m. (ET) / 3 p.m. (PT).
Ensemble and cast acting honors were inaugurated by the SAG Awards since, as every actor
knows, acting is a collaborative art. The term ‘ensemble performance’ has become part of the
lexicon and other award giving bodies now honor ensembles.
Studios, networks, actors, and actors’ representatives submitted performances for
consideration for the year 2011.
Nominations were decided by two panels selected annually in April through a random sample
drawing of SAG members. 2100 on the film nominating committee; another 2100 on the TV
committee. Nominating committees votes (cast either online or by paper ballot) were due on
Monday, Dec. 12, 2011 at noon PT. The Guild’s official teller is Integrity Voting Systems in
Washington state. Nominations were announced on December 14, 2011.
Final voting information for the SAG Awards was mailed on December 30, 2011 to every
active paid-up member of SAG across the country -- nearly 100,000 actors!
In keeping with the SAG Awards’ commitment to sustainable practices, online voting is
encouraged and paper ballots are available only upon request. Votes must be received
Integrity Voting Systems, by Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 at noon. Results will be sealed until the
envelopes are opened onstage on Jan. 29.
