Whitney Richards Grade: Second Georgia Performance Standard: SS2G1 The student will locate major topographical features of Georgia and will describe how these features define Georgia’s surface. a. Locate all the geographic regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau. Procedure: 1. The teacher will show the class a topographic map of Georgia with the Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau represented. The teacher should emphasize the aforementioned features to the students. 2. Students will then be given a black and white topographic map of Georgia created by the teacher. http://geology.com/state-map/georgia.shtml. (The teacher will add the aforementioned features to the map of Georgia.) 3. The teacher will give color-coded instructions on what features should be colored what color. 4. Students will then locate the various features on the map and color them accordingly. 5. As a project, students can be grouped together to create a 3D representation of Georgia’s topographic features. This can be done by using a flat board for the surface. Mountains can be created from crumpled construction paper glued to the surface, then painted.
